It took getting a much better instructor who really pushed me and I did change to automatic. This lady has not mastered the basic controls of the car for example her instructor has not got her to move off by using the gas. This leads to every start being at a snail's pace. This is fairly insignificant when moving off from parked in a quiet road but on a busy roundabout of dual-carriageways etc. from stopped slowly creeping out into traffic is going to be fraught with danger. You cannot get confidence until you have eradicated danger by being able to make the car do what you want it to do.

I took a test lesson with a new instructor after failing and he told me I didn't need any more lessons but was happy to give them to me if I wanted to have them. I passed soon after. Confidence is VERY important when driving, but instructors are just as much to blame for a lack of it. She's definitely been with the wrong instructor.

@@kirstylegore1569 I booked mine after my instructor had been telling me I wasn't ready for months when I clearly was as he would just talk about his boring life during lessons or have me drive him around to run errands instead of teach me anything. Then he forced me to have a 3 hour lesson before it, like on the day right before it, because he didn't want to refund me and I believed him that he couldn't because he'd already spent the money on bills or some nonsense nobody with sense would believe, and then just before I went to sign in for the test he repeatedly insulted me and put me in an awful mood, telling me how I didn't have a normal brain (I'm autistic, but didn't know at the time) and I ask too many questions and I should just shut up and accept what he tells me, after making £150 or so off me just for that one day including the test ffs. I had managed to put it to the back of my mind but then I clipped the kerb on a reverse park, which I had never once done before, and I just fell apart. All I could hear in my head was PUSH PULL PUSH PULL that my instructor would shout at me constantly because I didn't move the steering wheel exactly how he wanted me to even though my steering was perfect. It didn't help that it was supposed to be a minor because I only touched it and didn't mount it but the assessor failed me for it so whatever. He even offered to drive us back to the test centre, I was that inconsolable, but I managed to do the rest of the test without any problems after I'd calmed down because I knew I'd already failed it lol. I switched instructor straight away afterwards because he clearly tried to sabotage me so he could keep taking advantage of me (which ofc I didn't realise and had to have it explained to me) and passed just over a month later at the soonest available test. The new one told me I didn't need any lessons but he would give them to me if I insisted, and I did, because my confidence was wrecked. The second test was even worse because I had all of the stuff that happened in my head the whole time, and I got 10 minors like some kind of reprobate, but I did pass! It was nearly 3 years ago and I still get angry when I think about it hahahahaha, but I'm a really confident driver now and I'm so thankful we don't have to sit repeat tests to keep our licences because I would 100% fail from the anxiety of flashbacks! Stalling, rolling back, selecting the wrong gear and all other things caused by proper inability to control a manual car can really add so much more to anxiety when driving! I switched to automatic and this was the best thing Ive done because it increased my confidence instantly, I was driving on dual carriageways on my 8th hour with an auto when with manual on my 8th hour I wasn't able to move off the hill. I will never understand this whole british opposition to driving an auto, some people just need a car to get from A to B without depending on bus timetables, they don't expect to be accepted into Olympics just because they have a manual license! 😂 You let a washing machine wash your clothes, a dishwasher wash your dishes, but somehow letting a car change gears for you is considered 'lazy'? Utmost respect for Anne for her courage to show what many struggle with, young or older. To 'me' it makes an impact if one is only used to their driving school cars and then switch to another model (different clutch point, the brakes are different, different car size etc.). Also, most people take a test in their familiar area.. When I went to driving school (18 at that time) I struggled a lot with being insecure, driving too slow, not much progress.. It took me a long time (costly hours) to realize that my instructor (owner of the school, in his 60s) wasn't the right one 'for me'.. I changed the instructor and it was a game changer, it built up my confidence and I finally passed. With regards to Anne, I hope she didn't give up out of frustration. There should be no shame with regards to the hours. Best of luck to her.

Ann needs a new instructor, he is draining her pocket, you can just tell. If her instructor watches this he should ba ashamed, 81 lessons in. He's not a nice man as you state Ann. You are not a nervous driver you just lack confidence. When you make a mistake accept and move on. Beat yourself up at home but get your moneys worth in your lesson. By going over and over the problem areas to you. If that means spending the whole lesson on entering and exiting a roundabout. Clutch control, your paying so speak up. Reversing into a bay was my problem for some reason. Couldn't get it right on test day. So when I failed. I spent half of every lesson doing bay park about 4 to 5 times, went in everytime and my instructor was a little peeved with me. Couldn't understand why I needed to do it. But I wasn't confident on this manoeuvre. On my test perfection either side. You could measure it Lol.
Gear changes, , picking up speed, lane discipline at roundabouts should almost be locked by now after 81 hours. Even if not perfect. Ann you can do it with a new instructor, get rid. I am also a older driver and had instructors that tried to drain me. Got shot of them fast and they were also nice men, but not on my money.

She reminds me so much of me when I was learning (and when I'm driving now sometimes) I get very anxious and second guess a lot of things, which leads to undue hesitation. :)

I am 52 and failed my first test with 1 major fault and zero minors just over a week ago. I knew as soon as I did it that I had failed. I’m booked to try again this Friday, I have had about 35 + hours of driving lessons. I cannot wait to have the freedom of the open road. 🤞🤞 I honestly don’t know why I waited so long.

Wow, that's quiet late, did you never need it or did the idea of owning a driver's license not feel right untill recently? Just curious, I hope you passed 🙂

Is there an update on Anne to see how she’s doing with her driving? Seems like a lovely lady just very nervous I don’t blame her English roads can be intimidating, 81 lessons though, maybe change instructors as Anne doesn’t look comfortable in her ability to control the car. Hope she’s doing well 💗

I think Driving Instructors can read our Minds too 😂😂🚘. How do they know what's going in our minds😂😂😂??

The 81 lessons (I assume hours with an instructor), hits hard. She had to spend so much money, it feels more like robbery at this stage. I'm no instructor, but her mistakes are glaring. I think you were lenent with some of the faults as well. Do you actually know whether she passed her real test? Any updates?
