Use Tab Groups in Google Chrome to stay organized

- Do you use Google Chrome and have too many tabs open? The solution is to use Tab Groups. Tab groups in Chrome help you organize your tabs. You can use tab groups to groups tabs, name the tab group, and even add color to the group to make it easy to find. You can even collapse tab groups to save space and rearrange them.
You decide how you want to group your tabs. You could have groups for projects, events, airfare, hotels, shopping, how-to articles, or whatever your want. The choice is yours.

3:30 Tip for groups
How do I create Tab Groups in Chrome?
------
You can group tabs to keep related pages together in one workspace. To create a tab group, just right-click any tab and select Add tab to new group.
1. Right-click a tab.
2. Click Add Tab to new group.
3. Click New Group or click the name of an existing tab group (screenshot below)

Name a Tab Group and add a color to the Tab Group
------
A group will have the same color by default. You can easily add a color to a group. This helps with finding your groups quickly. Just click the circle next to your tab group to enter a name and pick a color.
1. Right-click the colored circle next to the tab group you wish to name.
2. Enter a name for the tab group. In my example I used Travel (see the screenshot below).
3. Pick a color for the tab group.

Collapse Tab Groups
------
If you are like me, I have a lot of tabs open in Chrome. To collapse a group, just click once on your Tab Group name to collapse, then click again to reopen.
1. To expand or collapse a tab group, click its name or colored circle.

Rearrange Tab Groups
------
Tab groups are easy to rearrange. Click and hold the name of your Tab Group and drag to the desired spot.
Save Tab Groups
------
As of today, April 7, 2021, I can't save tab groups. My workaround is to do the following in Chrome:
Click customize and control Google Chrome (the three dots in the top right).
Click Settings
Click On Startup
Select Continue where you left off

Thanks for the video! Just put all your links in a folder, right-click the folder, and "open all in new tab group." That's the workaround I use to save my tab groups.
If you have multiple windows running, rather than using X to close out of Chrome, use 3 dot menu > Exit. This will close all windows, and when you re-open, ALL windows including their respective tabs and tab groups will be restored.
I also recommend an extension called Session Buddy which saves all your sessions (sets of windows and tabs) automatically, handy when Chrome fails to restore them occasionally.
Awesome, just took note and will try out tomorrow
Fantastic video, Chris. Like you and many others, as my workday progresses I'm opening more and more tabs. Within a few hours - or at the end of the day - I discover a cluttered mess of open tabs. This instruction video you've made has saved me so much time and frustration locating where I was at after each of the umpteen times I am interrupted during the day. Thank you so much!!
I was looking for a way to save groups and on top of finding a great walkthrough I found someone who also loves Resident Evil! Lol I was so happy seeing that shirt 😄😊!.
Very helpful feature to organize multiple tabs. Another workaround to get back the closed group is CTRL + SHIFT + T. Would be better if Chrome comes up with the Pin Group feature. Thanks for sharing!
Great video. Tab Groups are a helpful organizing tool. You answered a question I had in the first minutes of your video. Adding tab groups is an easy process. I couldn't figure out how to save the groups to use when I reopen Chrome. I thought I wasn't creating them correctly. Thank you for providing the work around solution for "saving" the tab groups.
For anyone ending up here, know that you can know save and hide your tab groups. This video is no longer needed. But making Chrome start where you left off by default is still a nice tip for other reasons.
I was very confused about the purpose of group tabs when they don't save so thank you!!! Now I like group tabs 🙂 Thank you so much!!!!
This so amazingly explained. So glad I found you! Keep helping us! I appreciate you!
Thanks Jennifer!
Thank you so much. This tutorial was clear, visually understood, great pace, very helpful!
Great video! This helps so much. I like being able to drag&drop them into groups.
Really appreciate this tip to relaunch the tab groups. It was driving me crazy. It helps
Glad to help
Thanks for this. After Apple's announcement yesterday of their version of tab groups on Safari, I just had to have a look for it on Chrome. Just hoping Chrome gives us the option soon for saving the group tabs like in Safari's future roll out
Finally someone who knows!!! Thx mate
I am so glad I ran across your Video. I create training Videos' for employee's & the 2nd Window tip was exactly what I needed. Thank you, I Subscribed :)
Thanks, I've often wondered if this is possible. Following your instructions I've just grouped all my TV and Radio tabs into one. Really useful.
Excellent. I was looking for something else and noticed your interesting topic. Now I have a solution before I knew I had a problem. Thanks
Thank you Chris, this is groundbreaking, especially now that I know the ctrl+ Shift+ T command.
You're welcome!
@@ChrisMenardTraining chrome canary, send help pls sir & i need helps there in that app "how to open tab in groups" & how to make it appear there
Definitely a good work-around, Chris. Thanks for this idea! Until they add a "save groups for later" feature this is it.
Thanks Chris. Excellent tip 7 solution
Thank you! I didnt know you could do this in chrome until I watched your video
Glad I could help!
I was hoping by now that chrome would have updated this so you wouldn't need a work around to make this work! Thanx for the video.
It is fixed in Chrome version 111! Finally. It took them long enough. I have a video coming out this week.
@@ChrisMenardTraining Cool - send me the link when finished!
@@ChrisMenardTraining Just realized I'm running that version of chrome. I tried it. It seems to be working now. Thanx again for the video. Still interested in seeing the new video. Just subscribed to your channel. Hope that helps you out.
Thanks, a very helpful way to organise the million tabs I have open!
Thanks, Brendan.

Glad to help. Thanks for the positive feedback.
Great video, thank you, I didn't know you could do this on PC, I thought it was exclusively on mobile!
Terima kasih sebab betul-betul menjadi :)
Chris - greatly appreciate you and this video of helpful info. This was a great help! Liked and followed!!! ... It's funny though that it isn't saved when closed and re-opened. That was the point I thought for grouping them in the first place! Oh well - I will use your work-around! Thank you again!
I am surprised Google hasn't come up with a way to save them. Thanks, Samson.
They need to save the groups in a dropdown option somewhere on the bookmarks bar. So that we can close the group but still have other groups open in other chrome windows and/or so that we can quickly select a group and it pops up on the screen in front of the others. It's still so cumbersome but a start to a great feature to have.
Thank you! It is crazy that you can't save tab groups. That (to me) would seem to be the entire point of them and therefore where the value is. (I suppose you could argue that bookmarks would accomplish the same thing, but the difference to me feels like tab groups are more regularly used sites while bookmarks would be things you want to find at some point later.)
Agreed! I'm so annoyed. I saved a bunch of tabs in a group for my work research, assuming they're now saved somewhere like a bookmark. I could also see them in the restore tab recent history. Fast forward 24 hours, that group is gone - some 4 hours of valuable research wasted.
Exactly. That is the main point of tab groups in my mind.
Thank you!! This was super helpful!
You're so welcome!
Thank you so much! This is very useful!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this tips
Welcome 😊
thank you. love the shirt! from the UK btw
Thank you! I either get compliments about the shirt or when in public, people ask me who the company is. :-)
Thank you your majesty... you have saved my kingdom! I am forever in your debt. Hail to king MENARD! This morning for the second time this year, I foolishly let all my 17 tabs and groups vanish into the far reaches of our solar system. ( I was ticked off big time...you wouldn't believe all the good stuff I had saved up !)
I'll never get that info back again, so I'm going into a very deep meditation today and try to visualize how my screen looked a day ago then try and re-create everything again.
You're a nice guy, thanks again... and expect a miracle to happen in your life this coming Friday as a result of GOOD KARMA !
Good day.
you're a king.
Thanks. Not sure about being a king, but I appreciate the comment.
Thank you! I found the answer I was looking for in your video. (3:05 this helped me)

Great workaround to save tab groups! Unfortunately, my organization has locked that setting. However, I will take advantage of this on my home devices.
I believe Google is getting close to making this work correctly.
Excellent!
very helpful. thanks very much.

Me too!!!! Thank you!!!!!
Hi Chris! Great tips... and it drives me crazy too... ;-)
Also I would like to have a function in Chrome (or GMail) to be able to have an auto correction feature, like in Word... like when typing "RGD" > it becomes automatically "best Regards"... would be great, right?
Thank you
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Thanks for the insight
My pleasure!
Great Video, one issue is that the save tabs doesn't seem to work well when your work mandates that you go through a VPN. In that, I just start in the morning and at the end of the day, I just all out and start over the following day. However it is very useful during my work to have Tab Groups. I hope Google Changes this soon, very handy though. Thank you for the training!
you can save all the groups in bookmark and then open them like a group tab later
Thankyou so much 😊
Most welcome 😊
Thank you!!
Daniel, you're welcome!

thank you sir........
You are welcome.
great video )
Thank you very much!
Another work around for setting up permanent tab groups.. is to create instances of Chrome for each tab group.. save all tabs as a bookmark folder. then later you can open all the links in a tab group as a new tab group when you right click on the book mark folder
I lOVE tab groups, but you're right, after closing, the tab group names are lost! I did bookmark everything, so at least all the windows will open up again. But I'll try the "continue where you left off." Thanks much!!
Thank you. I'm still surprised Google hasn't figured out how to save. Hopefully soon.
question: will the tab group open even after a long pause? can I close the tabs and then reopen after eg. an hour?
thanks
You're welcome!
Omg I was notorious in school for having billions of tabs and I'm just learning this in the last year of uni!! Thank you !!
Glad to help.
So if you reboot without closing the chrome instances you have running or you lose power and dont manually close chrome it wont save the groups?
Tabox is a chrome extension that seems to do the same thing?
amazing
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks! Nice workaround. I'm going to give it a try. How strange that we can't save them, though. I mean, we can save bookmarks to pages, why not tab groups? Oh, Google! You work in mysterious ways.
I agree. I was expecting to see a Save Tab Groups near bookmarks.
Loved every new tab management thing on chrome. But saved with tab group disappointed me after finding way online 1hour. Expecting a new update with this one from google.
🔴🟠🔵What is the benefit of 3 circles on the right side of the Chrome Tabs? And how to enable them on any Chrome Browser?
Can you add multiple tabs to a tab group at once?
Thanks for the workaround... I wish it wasn't necessary... how hard is it just to have a "save groups" option for Chrome? Unfortunately, most of the time when Chrome closes, it's due to an error, and I don't necessarily have the option of being on the proper page, the one with my "Manuscripts" tabs. But, your workaround is better than the nothing that Chrome is offering right now. Creating tab groups is *half* of a good idea...
If you close your chrome browser, reopen it and do Ctrl + Shift + T to open the previous session tabs.
@@ChrisMenardTraining , still "save groups" looks obvious for me but I doubt will be added. Currently I have like 5-6 Chromes and each of it has like 5-15 groups. These all are very different **contexts** of my work. I would like to have only one Chrome for current context and switch easily to other one.
What Google provides? If you close single group - you can Ctrl+Shift+T. If you **bookmark** all groups you are **almost** there - all groups become folders in bookmark manager. But you can restore .... only ONE!!! what a shame.
Maybe Google scale for a usual web surfer for fun, not for someone who need to switch back and forth...
Has anyone found a way to add more colors too choose from??
You're a genius, I searched and searched and only you gave a solution .. By the way you turned to Google support, maybe they will give a solution?
Thank you.
Thx Chris but sadly due to product, it appears you cannot retrieve more than one tab group unless you have instances of Chrome on different screen, nightmare
They just appeared after an update, and I didn't know what they were. I started using them and I won't go back.😀
If we could save them. :-)
Help. I enabled tab groups save in flags, now I cannot get rid of a tab group. Even if I ungroup, the label inside the bookmarks space persists. How to remove it from there?
What's the point in having tab groups if they all need to be open in the same browser? I can just have open tabs. I want to have tab groups for different topics in different browser windows.
I just want to save tab groups so they are not eating up memory while I continue browing.Any suggestions?
Very helpful! Hare Krishna to you.
How to switch tabs only in groups?
By the way DID you turned to Google support, maybe they will give a solution?
There is now a "Save Group" option?
