Thanks for the helpful information! I recently stumbled across your channel from doing some research of my own. Question: When you went to your local print shop was there a format that you had to have your designs in order for it to be printed?

I'm glad you found it useful! Most print shops prefer vector files (adobe illustrator and pdf). When I went, I saved my illustrator files as PDFs.

Great video. Very informative. I make my own greeting cards featuring my photographs which I sell at local markets that are visited by cruise ships. I haven't even considered selling them online. Mine are hand made and the act of making them is a slow process. I'm guessing your cards are professionally printed / produced? Out of curiosity, when reaching out to people like accountants and realtors, are these individuals that are usually in your networking group? And yea I can see the benefits of sharing photos of your products on social media. Though unfortunately with sites like Facebook, companies can acquire rights to use your images for their own uses. Whereas I would want to retain full control of my images (photographs.)

    • @DinaLu

I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Yep, I got mine printed at a local print shop. If yours are photos, why do you handmake them, why not print them? I've reached out to accountants and realtors who aren't in my network using different kinds of strategies. If you search on CZcams "Dina Lu networking", you can find some of my tips on networking. For some, I follow them for a while and then reach out, but for some I meet them at different kinds of events, or it's through other people.

@@DinaLu Why do I had make my greeting cards? That's a good question! I guess first, I'll clarify what I mean exactly by hand made. In my case, I have the printing of the photographs done at a photographic lab (using the RGB colour space.) For your work at the print shop, I assume you would use CMYK. I then cut a sheet of cut into small sections, fold those sections over and glue the prints on to one side of the folded card with a label on the other side.
As to why I do them this way, that would be due to the type of venue in which they will be sold (the cruise ship markets.) I really didn't expect to sell huge numbers of cards within this kind of environment. There are certain images that sell quite well at my market stall (I would call them my top sellers.) I do have other images that don't sell as well (they sell a little bit once in a while.) I wouldn't really be feasible to go to a print shop for these 'low ball sellers.' As you know, I would have to order a very large quantity to get a decent price for each individual card. And I can't justify doing that for the images that only sell a little bit. When I go to the photographic lab, I only order a small number of copies of the 'low ball sellers' because really, that's all I need. And I will order a significantly larger number of copies of the top sellers. I also have other images that perform somewhere in between those two extremes in terms of sales. And for those, I would order an intermediate number of copies.
I guess I could consider going to a print shop for my top selling images (turning them into professionally produced greeting cards as opposed to hand made.) Though on the other hand, the local photographic lab offers a metallic type paper that really suits one of the top selling images, giving it a very special look. And I doubt that a print shop would have the equivalent type of finish for a greeting card product. I could be wrong about that. If I am going to sell my greeting cards online, I guess I could consider using a print shop and only offering my top selling images. In addition to that, I could also offer a hand made version of one of those images with the metallic paper (and price that one higher.)
I admit that in the past, I have had a fear of having products like cards mass produced. Because of the huge amount of money involved in getting large quantities of them printed. It's always a worry - what if they don't sell or hardly sell at all?
I'm sorry for the super long reply. I didn't mean to write a wall of text!

@@DinaLu Hello again. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction for reaching out to accountants and realtors. I understand now.
Ive also discovered that the cost of printing on metallic paper from the local photographic lab is really high. Over $4 just for a 4 x 6 inch print! Metallic paper does suit one of my images really well though. I know I mentioned before that I could offer different card versions of the same image online (via a store like Etsy.) One version of the image could be a card from a print shop. And the other version could be a hand made card - printed on metallic paper. Well now I see that the hand made metallic paper version is going to have a very high price - likely over $13. I'm not sure how many people would pay that much for a greeting card. Though at least I'll be giving customers a choice - pay $4 or $5 for the print shop version or pay a lot more for the metallic paper version. I guess the latter could be considered a deluxe version. I'm not expecting many sales with this so called deluxe version but it will be interesting to see how it fares. Regardless, it is one of my top selling images from the markets.
Oh and by the way, I guess I could give another reason why I go with hand made cards a lot of the time. There is a little local art gallery over here that only accepts hand made arts and crafts. They don't take cards that have been produced at print shops.

Thanks! Your posts aren't too long! I think creators everywhere face similar issues!
I want to make hand painted, one of a kind, cards & your post has encouraged me to charge more for that value. And I agree with your sentiment about not wanting to post on some social media platforms because your ownership rights might be jeopardized.
How are you doing now? Wishing you all the best! 🌟

    • @anzaeria
      @anzaeria Před 5 měsíci

Hey that sounds awesome with the hand painted cards. And yes, I'm sure that you'll be able to set a very nice price for them.
Despite wearing a mask and taking precautions, I caught Covid when I was selling my photos at a cruise ship market about two years ago. And I was the only seller wearing a mask! So I took a break from that and instead, started to sell my cards through shops (a local post office and a restaurant.)
However, I feel that some items sell better at markets. For example, I made a DVD which consists of nature footage that I recorded on Kangaroo Island (wildlife and landscapes set to music.) I used a print company to print the DVD cover. And usually, I would sell one DVD per market. And at one particular market, I sold two DVDs! Later, I tried selling those DVDs through the post office but they did not do as well there (only one sold.) Though I did sell an 8 x 10 inch landscape photograph with matte through that post office and a shop that sells arty goods so I'm happy about that.
Currently, I'm working on a video about how I make my greeting cards (the process involved) with some sample cards shown. I'm thinking of uploading it to a new channel - Patrick Cooper Photography. @@serenitytrek
