The instrument is the Kobyz. It's a 2 stringed instrument, with one string made up of 75 horse hairs, and the other string made from 60 horsehairs (and the curved bow which is made with 40 horse hairs). The strings aren't pushed down to a fret, but rather are played with pressure by either the fingernail, or by a pad on the finger, as well as the tones varied by the pressure of the bow.

Dimash doesn't depend on his talent alone. Have you watched his interview on KZTV (about 40mins) you can get a lot of insights from that to understand why he's different from regular artists. He grew up in a traditional family home where his grandparents took care of him and his siblings while his parents worked. His grandma spoke of how he would often while practicing in his room late into the night sing so loudly she would have to remind him that they're trying to sleep. So no, he didn't always have the space but he made do with what he had. Luckily he had the love and understanding of family that many students miss out on as you noted. That love and support allowed him to hone his God-given talent with daily practice from a young age to now, it's why he's good at what he does. It was never just talent but sheer will and hard work. @@DDan61 I was referring to Dimash's comments to the audience, and to the others on the stage. Of course the lyrics were in English.
The uncorfontable feeling probably comes from the scale or key of Fa minor that to us sounds spooky, ancient or oriental. Perhaps they look to create that feeling: the listener becomes a stranger in a strange land like so many emigrated people in this time: a new chance to begin again if they have the strength to begin again.
Those lyrics made me think about the character (if not Dimash himself at one point in his life) wanting to start again in a new relationship after one more maybe even two other relationships went wrong.

Он давно его поклонник. У него есть реакции на Димаша. Это особенный юноша. У него также есть абсолютный слух. Сразу определяет все ноты. И восприятие им музыки и пения Димаша очень особенные, не похожие на других.
Поправка: мой абсолютный слух для меня скорее активный, чем пассивный фактор. Я не идентифицирую каждую ноту сразу, но я могу идентифицировать ноты по одной, определять тональность на слух и определять последовательность аккордов на слух. Так что для меня это очень активная задача, но все же ее можно назвать абсолютным слухом, да. Также спасибо, что заступился за меня. This bowl-neck lute played with a bow is is an old Turkic stringed instrument and called Kobys or Kylkobyz in Kazakhstan. The Kyrgyz variant, for example, is called the kyl-kyyak.
The Kobys is the oldest string instrument in the world and, according to a German scientist, it spread beyond the borders of the nomadic area of Central Asia and became the mother (prototype) of all European string instruments.
(Turkic means: The Turkic peoples are a collection of ethnic groups from Central, East, North and West Asia as well as parts of Europe and North Africa who speak Turkic languages.)
A legend about Kobyz says that this instrument was created by the great steppe narrator Korkyt-Ata, who lived in the 10th century and that the tool is charged with magical and even mystical properties and sounds like animal voices. In addition, the Kazakh people believed that the spirits of their ancestors spoke to them through this music.
The old outlook and piety towards their instruments and music was constantly preserved in traditional Kazakh society and ensured the highest spiritual level of musical art and a special respectful attitude towards musical instruments. Well, Dimash has a tone of unlimited voices(whether his original voice carries as a man voice(inheritance); The voice and other is all about practice no matter what to reach the point of geniuses. Otherwise, No genius exist ( without a practice)✨
