It's funny how Rangemasters have been overlooked when they were such an integral part of so many fundamental classic sounds. Hardly anyone knows about them, meanwhile there are 897^67 Tube Screamer clones.

@@JohanSegeborn I never explored them when I was younger because I thought "TREBLE booster? I don't need more treble!"... Being Gen-X I missed the prior days of boosting the front end of amps being a more common thing, but in reality it's functionally a big part of the classic rock era.

@@TheChipMcDonald The other cool thing about a great TB is you can set your amp slightly darker and have a fat af rhythm tone that sits great in a band mix and just hit the 'pop' pedal when you need to jump forward in the mix.

How do you figure nobody knows about them? Anyone who loves sabbath knows what it is... I think people just found other ways to get what they were after, and tube screamers are cheap and literally everywhere.

Tony iommi had a modified Dallas Rangemaster which had more of a frequency boost and he used P90s and the Laney amp he would run clean with his Settings being Presence, Treble and mids on max his bass on 0 and the volume on 10

    • @rocketpigrecords3719
      @rocketpigrecords3719 Před rokem +4

      Almost.
He set the bass at 0 and rolled the knob up with the amp craked at sound check to "dial it in to the venue", but imho he was avoiding fart from the low wattage speakers he was using.
As far as "clean" the Supergroup is nothing more than a less reliablle Plexi with different output transformers.
I had a YBA1, as in, has a bass appropriate tranny in it. It's still a plexi.
Cranked to the high heavens it's only ACDC levels off gain, and Iommi knew about volume knobs on his guitar, I reckon.

    Sabbath nerd here:
The John Birch pickup in the Monkey SG is almost inconsequential, the neck was changed to a Hyperflux that he barely used for some leads, and John covered the stock Gibson P90 to reduce noise in the bridge, which is what you'll hear 95+ of the time.
The later humbuckers in the JayDee SGs are V E R Y hot high output pickups, very akin to his Gibson signature pickups. These are for Reunion tones, not the originals.
IMHO the big difference between a p90 and a PAF here is probably negligible, but figured I'd mention it just for future tone autistes.

Maybe next time ...8/9 gauge strings, lower tunings C,D and of course the Plastic thimbles for the dead chords and slight ring on the high strings. But John you make every thing sound good!

Hi, I need an answer to cure my curiosity. Just saw some footage of Black Sabbath live at California Jam 1974, and I noticed the backline of Laney amps. Now, I assume those are Made in the UK amps and they work on british power supply ( like 240 volts, 50 Hz right?). What they used in the early days to make british amps work on 110 volt Usa grid? External transformers or such?
    Many thanks!

Interesting for me to notice, that we can have the exact gear Iommi used for all those classic Sabbath records... but 90% of his sound came from his personality, then fed thru hands.

We usually have a long disclaimer at the beginning of every clip stating that the tone is mostly in the hands of the artist. Can you guess why?

I have a range 2 remake. This effect prduces more mids. The Laney produces in combination with the rangemaster cool sounds. Cool Video, Johan play two guitar necks, have two heads and four legs.:-)

    Hey J. Great Video.
    The tone is there.
How was it in the room? Did Tony Iommi enter from behind the curtain ?

Thanks Tommy! Well to me Tony Iommi is unobtainable, but sure I got some TI vibes going there for sure!

This time I must say I'm a bit disappointed that you didn't go all the way and chopped your fingertips off to get that exact Iommi sound. Great playing and great sound as always.

BTW this particular amp is stamped with "ARGENT"... who I'm pretty sure used Laney amps in the early 70s! Songs like 'Hold your head up' and 'God gave Rock n Roll to you' !

Can you tell me any interesting inside information about it?
    Love the channel too!

I wanna know what exactly the guitar tech who modded Tony’s rangemaster did to give it that nasty lava like guitar tone off of Master, something I’ve never heard replicated completely

Rangemasters modern equivalent would be the 33,TubeScreamer and the infamous HM2 and MetalZone. They just add something magic to the tone even when just used to boost.

Only the neck pickup was a john birch, the bridge was a gibson p90 that had a metal cover put on it and they were both potted with epoxy instead of wax.

Oh yeah and kudos to both of you for your playing very Sabbath-esque riffs that had the right character and feel but (hopefully) don't trigger the stupid copyright claims.
