If you take a double take on Jisoos scene (The One wearing the pink bob cut that fell) She is walking through a group of people who are completely ignoring her and paying attention to the photo of her behind her that photo represents the high standards and perfection that a lot of Kpop idols are pressured to be. Its not until she falls and gets back up acting like nothing happened where you see that everyone's eyes are now on her and the phones they were using to take photos of the mural of her behind her are now pointed at her like guns. This scene is supposed to represent what its like being famous now a days, people won't pay attention to you until you mess up or do something that they consider to be funny or imperfect.

The lyrics had absolutely nothing to do with her falling over, or about imperfection, or about perseverance… which was my point. You don’t have one message in your lyrics and a completely separate one in your video, that isn’t how visual/audio works. I get what they were trying to represent, but the lyrics didn’t match AT ALL. The whole video looks like it was dreamt up by an 8 year old 🤷🏻‍♂️

3:38 well just because you don’t understand something doesn’t mean it didn’t make sense. It didn’t make sense to you. But their fans know the significance of the video. When she fell did you notice people were pointing the cameras at her like guns. In the lyrics she says I smile because it does me good. She’s saying she has to smile because they are just waiting for her to make a mistake. When she fell they all turned their phones at her pointed like a gun ready to drag her through the mud for her mistake.

I've been in Kpop for almost 15 years and the girl group the most I think you would appreciate especially on a lyrical level, but even visual and overall expressing themselves personally subject matter wise would definitely be G-Idle, the leader Soyeon writes like all of the tiles + albums basically, I would check out Oh My GOD, Tomboy and Lion (some of the most prolific videos, specifically in the industry to date and like I said I'm an OG 2nd Gen Kpop stan so that's saying a lot)

(G)I-dle had a rough year in 2021 and early 2022 due to the school bullying controversies and was on the brink of disbandment. however, their latest Album (I never die) has brought them back alive and on the Kpop girl group A-list. they are gonna have a world tour (sadly due to the pandemic situation globally, it's not really the 'world' tour as they exclude many other regions including Europe) in July/August. Black pink are very pop, but their songs are like earworms that get stuck in your head and beat you into submission. When Jisoo fell to the ground, the people in the background initially weren’t interested in her catwalk, they were taking pictures of her image behind, but when she got up from falling they were pointing their phones at her like guns and also had balaclavas on. The meaning I get from that is that when you make a mistake that is what interests people. They do have some good songs, they don’t write their own music for the group, I don’t know about individually for solo work, and I don’t think they always translate well. But they’re still catchy as hell!

The scene with the girl falling actually has a deeper meaning then it appears In this scene, we see two Girls. One is an unchanging, infallible image (on the wall in the background). The other is a living, breathing, and a real person.
“Fans” or the public eye take admiring photos of her image, but as soon as she makes a mistake, the “fans” turn their phone on her like guns. This symbolizing how photos and social media can be used to build someone up as easily as they can tear someone down.
It also shows how one little mistake can damage an idol’s image and turn admirers against them which goes right along with the WHOLE music video and lyrics. Talking about how they have worked hard, and how they smile for themselves but not for others because they know there worth. How they may be looking like sweet and innocent girls but they can be savage too. The whole video and esthetics all talk about them as women in the industry.

The lyrics and MV are absolutely coherent and absolutely make perfect sense, if you are into hip-hop music. This girl group comes from an entertainment company found that 2 brothers who used to part of a 3-member music-rapping group at the beginning of K-pop in the early 90's. They were the first few artists that introduced hip-hop and rapping into the S. Korean pop music. In addition to this, their music producer and composer of ALL of their songs, Teddy Park, also used to be live in the US, and then came home to S. Korea to become a very successful hip-hop rapper. These people then put these 4 talented (singing, rapping and dancing) young ladies together to form a band who present itself a music group with a concept called "girl crush" in K-pop parlance. This could be translated to the Western world as "confident woman", i.e, most of their song and stage performance (singing + rapping + dancing), and they do it a heavily hip-hop-influenced style. Now why a music band needs to stick a "concept" is another long story. If you don't get it, you don't get it. There is nothing wrong with that. Their style of music is not for everybody. But, I can assure you there is nothing superficial about them. They know exactly what they are doing. I am an Asian-American who lives in Texas. I got introduced to K-pop accidentally in 2019. I have learned to respect the artistry of most K-pop groups, but found that none of them, including BTS, vibe with me at all, EXCEPT BlackPink. They first got my attention because their songs have "catchy" melodies. That was the start. Then, via captions, I have found their lyrics are very meaningful and relatable. I don't know how it happens, but for a guy like me who never cared for (still does not care for) American Hip-hop culture, somehow I have learned to love their style of K-pop hip-hop. They (the CEO, Teddy the composer/producer, the video director and the 4 girls) are extremely meticulous in making their music videos, which are famous for being high-budgeted, and most importantly, for full of creative artistic details, tons of meticulous details, being among the best in the industry. These are very serious artists. I am sorry that you don't get it, and I don't see anything wrong with you or your musical taste. I respect you honesty. Let me give some suggestions: how about you watch their MVs in chronologically order: (1) "Boombayah" (very popular but, to me, least substantive), (2) "Whistle" (2d to last in term of popularity, but multi-award winning, and to me, super-creative and supper-cool), (3) "Playing With Fire" (very popular and among my top 3 favorites), (4) "Stay" (least popular, no hip-hop element, "folksy" but among my top 2 favorites), (5) "As if it's Your Last" (popular, a bit "un-BlackPink", girly, summer vibe, and to me, still very enjoyable), 6 = this one "Ddu-du Ddu-du", (7) "Kill This Love" (2d or 3d in popularity, "grand style" at its zenith, and very deep in substance, to me, much better than DDDD (although you might not get it either)), (8) "How You Like That" (extremely popular, the last of their "grand" MVs, more in styles and less in substances compared to (6) and (7), very enjoyable), (9) "Ice Cream" (in collaboration with Selena Gomez, summer vibe, 99% in English, designed to break into the US market, not pretending to be a "serious" song or MV, very witty and enjoyable though), and (10) "Love Sick Girls" (their last MV so far, coming out in 10/2020, not the most popular, not so "grand", but to me, a true masterpiece, deep deep in meanings, signaling a complete in artistic direction for the future songs and MVs). I hope this would help you to join me in my BlackPink journey. But if you don't, that's OK, too.

A little context might help you make sense of the scenes in the MV. Kpop is basically a gladiator arena, with several idols driven to suicide every year from social media hatred. Prior to this song, each of the members of Blackpink had been targeted by hate from netizens and social media, most notably with threats of physical violence against Lisa (the rapper) for not being Korean to the point that the Thai Embassy in Seoul was compelled to get involved. The song is one big FU to all their haters. They are calling out their haters, telling them Blackpink is not hiding or backing down, they are standing their ground, well armed (swords, tank, guns) and ready to fight (in the chorus gunning down their haters). The Jisoo falling scene: First the men are all focused on the mural of Celebrity Jisoo (note the camera phones not paparazzi cameras, this is about social media), completely ignoring the Real Jisoo standing right there next to them. They are only interested in the perfect flawless image, not the real human being. Until she falls (representing some type of scandal or social misstep). Then notice, not a single one goes to help her up, instead they all turn into masked assassins (representing the anonymity of the internet) and their camera phones now have pistol grips representing weapons that will be used to finish her off. Instead of staying down, Jisoo stands back up defiantly, ready to take on the wave of hatred she knows full-well is coming for being a flawed human being and not living up to the image of perfection demanded by some. So, no there are no gratuitous scenes for the sake of a "cool" shot. If you dare continue, you will find MV's like How You Like That, that have whole CZcams videos explaining the Greek Mythological symbolism on a scene by scene basis by people like a graduate in Greek Classism from Cambridge University (British Priest Reacts to How You Like That). Or Kill This Love, heavily laden not only with Greek Mythological symbolism but also Freudian Psychological symbolism (see British Priest Reacts to Kill This Love). The MV's are cool visually, but with a depth of meaning and symbolism unfamiliar to Western audiences.

What you gonna do, when i come come through with that that uh uh uh,
its an open ended statement, every answer will be different depending on what the guy will do, you got that much right, you dont know what you will do.
but in the sense of Hit you with that ddu du ddu du du, that is guns being shot, so if you can imagine her going ddu du ddu du, or the gun sound, bang bang bang. what you gonna do when she come.........
so it could also mean, not use a gun, but hit you with that dududududu, you just got to deal with what ever she decides she will do to get even.
She doesnt play nice like others, as others may let you get away with what ever it is, but she will not let you get away with it, when she hits you with that du du du du .(consequences)
I know it is difficult, translating korean to english, it doesnt make 100 percent cents all the time, so often times, just get the jist of what is being said, and make it work to the best you can. everyone interprets lyrics differently, even english lyrics can be deciphered multiple ways. so dont get so technical and if you like the beat, go with that, and let the lyrics roll around until they make some sense.

Rose is looking up at herself on a pedestal (the way the world sees her) and then you see her standing on the ground (who she actually is)- every scene shows who the world sees Blackpink as and who they really are. Someone else can for sure explain it better than me but it is not all “vague nonsense” you just have to take a minute to look into it. You don’t have to like them or their style of music but it’d be worth it to take a deeper look before you write them off as shallow and meaningless 🤷🏼‍♀️ thanks for the content, I did enjoyed watching!

Please read the whole comment and Please check out HOW YOU LIKE THAT, KILL THIS LOVE and BOOMBAYAH. And their songs goes with the MV if you look at the details the songs has meaning.
HOW YOU LIKE THAT: The lyrics talk about how a person has "hit rock bottom and sunk deeper." The main question and the title of the song is in reference to karma, since they then speak of how they are going to "grab the last bit of hope." this song is for the haters who downgrades blackpink, ignoring the fact that bp went through a lot just like the other kpop idols that these bashers stan. It's a diss track for all those who hated on them for nonsense reasons. Many fans turned on their backs in them when the girls needed their support the most (during yg scandals). They are basically showing that as long as they are true to themselves, they can succeed. True fans are always with them in their highs and lows.
KILL THIS LOVE: The song in it’s entirety is about a relation which is toxic(for both sides) and needs to be ended. There’s a sense of self-awareness about the mistakes of entering this relationship, a struggle of trying to resist breaking it off, and there’s even some religious symbolism in the song and MV itself.
One of the easiest things to spot is the difference between the rappers, Jennie and Lisa, and the singers, Rose` and Jisoo; the singers end up killing themselves, whereas the rappers don’t. I think this is meant to represent the battle between the mind and the heart, with the singers being the mind and the rappers being the heart.
BOOMBAYAH: What is the meaning of Blackpink Boombayah?
'BOOMBAYAH' is a spicy song that expresses feelings of attraction between a boy and a girl. It is sung from the perspective of the girl and how irresistible she is to the guy in question. The beats are pulsating and make for good party music.

They actually are empowering to many women - probably why you didn't get the meanings of the stories in the MV.
Glittery tank is actually a very clear symbol. Especially with the shopping bags.
As was the falling down : While nobody noticed her real self as they the people filming her perfect advertisement picture, UNTIL she messed up, then they pulled down their ski masks and turned into anonymous haters, pointing their cameras at her like literal guns - it is actually extremely clever way of refer to haters.
And lyrics and the sitting in the chandelier actually even do go together.
But yes, they do not make their own music and probably do not have a lot of saying of anything about their music or performances - sadly. Because they are from a company that is not one of the good companies. :=(
So it is actually quite ironic that they are empowering other women, but not themselves :=(
Also not all big music acts are soulless robots who just pose for the camera.
There has been all of the music history BIG musical acts that Also have been extremely poilitical, as there is big acts like that now.
Just casually mentioning BTS here - group that make their own music and are highly political to the point that their own country censors their music out of their recorded albums (Again mentioning Suga here). Also they are in one of the good companies.. õ.Ö
Group that sings a song that literally "highlights" country to go F themselves because they are bad for their people - and they go to perform it in freaking Saudi.. Watching that live I was sure they would get arrested from the stage.. That one performance aged me probably a full decade.
Them making another song that could have had them literaly _disappear_ in their own darn country by the corrupt goverment, before they were big enough to be safe from that..
BTS are not born Silver Spoon in their mouth, but they are enjoying their Spring Day after a long hard winter that they had to fight to get into the light...
Oh, if you didn't get the symbolism in the BlackPink music video you probably did not get the hint where I gave you the song names of BTS songs that I was talking about. Baepsae/Silver Spoon ( the "FU" is in the choreo, because they can't say it straight up in their lyrics, but they have said later, in a roundabout way, that the choreo is not how most people take it.. ;D) and Spring Day (this one is so political, that since it came out {February 13, 2017} it has not left the charts - it is longest charting K-pop song in the K-pop history).

Wow, these comments are half angery nasty blink hate amd the other half are a half-hearted attempt to not be Nasty and end up being a perfect example of passive aggressiveness at it's finest.
It always sucks, reactors get so much hate for being honest that they eventually stop being honest being able to watch them. When commentor try to bully you into liking a group because they can't handle anyone else's truth, it reminds me just how finite the balance in kpop is.
This is obviously an old video, and I accidentally clicked it while going đff74737r⁷⁷⁷rr7r⁷f⁷r⁷776tthrough your reaction⁰0⁰⁰⁰⁰. But I figured itmould help to point to have one more comment on it that understands where you are coming from and not putting words in your mouth. So many of these people love the line "You just didn't get it!" Oh no, he basically got it. Because the storyline their fans are epointing out obviously isn't meant to, or going to, appeal to him. Not because it's about woman or about Idol culture. Because it doesn't matter. Hear me out... These songs and MVs are scriped for them. They don't write their own music. So none of the meanings that these songs have are ever going to be personal. Yes, the girls went through this and so on and so forth. Having the song Witten for you about something you can relate to doesn't give if meaning. Lol There's nothing here... just a few lines of meaning and some impossible for anyone to actually pick out without some kind of previous knowledge or weird knack for it. No, they don't have the kind ofnmusic he is talking about needing. He wants very personal, very unique, and very meaningful music from groups he can relate to on at least a few fronts. That's why I can understand why he's not all peer BTS either. They have very meaningful lyrics, but they almost get TOO deep into them. Unless you a schooled on it, or take years to learn it, it's not going to click. You wil lmiss a ton, and get shit for it. SKZ are.... Kinda perfect. Their lyrics tackle topics that are very tattoo, they are far further to more experimental side than BTS is eith their sounds and they make sure to balance their song input with the rest. The instrumentals and the WAY they apply the lyrics to it. They are everything for people that need depth, and yes a wide pool both. I bet that wholeheartedly. It's nothing against anyone else personally, music is simply to subjective to do that with. To each their own. That said, when it comes to kpop, I notice more and more that people who love SKZ either stick with them and mainly just them. At least 4th boy group wise. Or they stan everyone. I there's really not many people who just stan them and only one other (not bts) boy group. That's because there really isn't anyone like them. Same goes forball these groups. They are unique. Which is why its ok that not everyone likes it. Lol

Had a similar experience when i was first introduced to BP. Wat put me into the group was actually hearing their songs without the music videos going into the third song. Then went back and watch the videos. Sometimes it takes a few shots to get it. I was into another group at first. I fell for Bp on my own terms but i blew them off at first listen because i was so heavily focused on another group. Them being so popular i just didnt wanna get into the band wagon. Now i listen to them religiously and with 100 percent their songs have the most plays on my music playlist. Actually they are speaking facts with every verse. Lol its only because your not familiar with them that you dont get it.

Actually, the chandelier part of this is an interesting one. The first time we see it, we actually get two versions of Rosé. The one on the chandelier is in white, with the crown, then one on the ground is in black. It's that "two sides of her" thing you talked about early on in your reaction. Later in the video we get rosé in all black now swinging on the chandelier, its like the dark one winning out so to speak. Honestly a pretty cool narrative underling the lyrical meaning in this one.

I do feel like he just judged this MV way too quicker. Calling THE BLACKPINK that "they have no personalities and group dynamics" is a big statement just by watching a five minute video only once.
Sorry but I did feel there was a preconception in your mind about them before watching them.
Like you deliberately wanted to state the fact that .."every popular thing is not good"
I could be wrong here. But this is my honest view about your reaction 😂😂
Lyrics and content are imp but you do have to appreciate the music, vocals, sounds, beats, visuals, dancing etc in KPop.
Jennie's rap is fire and so savage. Same for Lisa rap part. And jisoo and rose vocals were mesmerizing.

No I get that, I got that the first time around, but it still isn’t cohesive with the lyrics at all. It’s like the video is telling you one thing and the lyrics are saying another - I don’t like that. It waters down either the lyrics or the visuals, depending on which one you’re watching. Which means it’s more than likely purposeful so that people have to rewatch the video over and over again just to get it. To me, that’s way too thirsty. Let your talent shine as opposed to gimmicks 🤷🏻‍♂️ these girls _do_ genuinely seem very talented! But I think their management cares more about money than artistic substance and unfortunately that way of thinking is currently killing real music.

to be honest, as someone who does like blackpink, i've found that i actually tend to shy away from their title tracks. they're meant to be "pop", to catch people's attention and be earworms. lyrically, they don't tend to be super in-depth. if you want blackpink songs that have more substance in the lyrics, you HAVE to listen to the side tracks, not the title tracks. "love to hate me" is a great side track that i personally really like.
i actually think you'd prefer lisa's solo releases more than blackpink's group releases. lisa - money is SUPER catchy with a ton of attitude; imo, it's more up your alley than bp in general.

I appreciate your honesty on this. Blackpink are on my playlist, but not as much as Skz, NCT, Mamamoo, or old grunge and post-punk.... We all like what we like; I tend to prefer music that breaks the mold a bit more. But I do have a lot of sympathy with the lyrics of this song. It's not vague to most women, especially if they've spent time in cultures with less gender equality. It's all about how women are supposed to be "pretty" and "nice", and they are saying--no, I'm not like that, just wait until I hit you with my *sound indicating gunfire or attack or some kind of dirty, nasty energy*.
These women are famous, and get a lot of hate from the media when they are not perfect pretty nice girls in public--thus the recording phones pointed at them like guns when they fall or mess up. It's kind of satisfying (for a woman who has often been relegated to the "sweet nice girl" role) to watch them basically saying "Hey, I'm not putting up with this s*** and if you assume I will, BANG". Compared to a lot of girl groups in kpop, they have more of an edge and allow more anger and "swag" into their music, which is part of why they are so popular--close enough to the norm not to scare folks off, but just enough bitter/sour flavor to make them stand out.
You might want to check out NCT--they have a lot of sub-groups, I tend to prefer NCT-127 and NCT-U. Check out Lemonade, Sticker, Simon Says, 7th Sense, Make a Wish. Their line up changes a lot, so if there is one voice that irritates you, try another few songs, that singer might not be in the next, or they might have a different balance that satisfies you more. Their music has enough oddness and creativity that you might be interested, but it is also unabashedly dance music, so that might turn you off a bit. A lot of Skz fans like MCND, they have a harder edge although to me they sometimes have a sort of pop/slick sound that turns me off them a bit. Try Ice Age.
For kpop girl groups, they often sound overall too pop for me, but I've got some (G)Idle, Itzy, Aespa, and f(x) on my playlist. I love Mamamoo, because they present as full grown women, not girls, but they are a more vocals based group. You could try Hip, Moonbyul has some good raps in it. Again, in this they are talking about the effect that media gaze has on women. How you look, your fashion, is more important to media than talent, brains, opinions or anything else about you, if you are a female. Lots of us get a little miffed about that and appreciate songs that push back at it. They are saying "Screw your limited standards, if I've got greasy hair or don't wear a sexy dress, I'm still hip because I'm just aalll thaaaat".

I appreciate your honest opinion! I think reflecting on MV's a lot of MV's throughout history either have everything to do with the lyrics, or nothing at all. ya know? I'm sorry that you're getting a lot of heat for literally no reason. If these were reactions to common American artists I feel like you may not be getting as much of it, but here's kinda a way to try and understand them (as I've reasoned in my head) Fans of kpop are strikingly close to how sports fans are. In sports there's those die hards for their home team, those who are casual sports fans, etc. So those die hards of their home sports teams will go to the ends of the earth supporting their team whether they're right/wrong or even toxic. Most of the time you're probably getting those hateful comments from those types of fans. But I promise the more accepting and chill ones are just liking the video and moving happily along to the next. I see you have continued to check out Kpop and didn't let them get you down! So I'm really happy for you! Kpop is hella lit (but SUPER confusing at first) It took me such a long time to figure out basically this whole different language for things like 'stage' 'bias' 'comeback' 'vocal/rap line' such common words that we as kpop fans know but take for granted that people just starting out wouldn't have any idea.
Thank you again for the honest reaction!
