  • Hello everyone! Watch my new video BeamNG Drive - James Dean Car Crash Simulation.
    Good Channel - / @digital-drive
On September 30, 1955, James Dean, at the height of his acting career, tragically died in a car crash. This accident still raises many questions and concerns.
The student did not miss James Dean's Porsche spyder 550 and hit him in the front left fender of the car.
I tried to simulate James Dean's car crash in BeamNG Drive.
Thanks to everyone who liked and subscribed!👍
BeamNG Drive is a game with a unique, realistic soft body engine that simulates every component of the car in real time, resulting in realistic and dynamic behavior.

It probably wasn't even planned. They probably just paved over an already existing old dirt trail. A lot of roads in this country came into being that way. For example, I went to the old Antietam battlefield in Maryland and had an old Civil War map, and all the modern roads in the area were on the Civil War map, in the same places. They were originally just dirt trails and when it came to making modern roads they just paved over what was already there.

1955 and I would not call it designed. Current configuration has a very large grass island separating the intersecting road's two lanes so Turnipseed left turn can not be made at speed now that it could have easily made in 1955.

This is the real cause of the crash. It’s insane that they put a left turn crossing over a highway like that. The planner didn’t even have the decency to put a stop for the left turn. Imagine designing a highway where one section can legally swerve in front of the other.
Road designer and his supervisor should be in prison. That intersection was known as death alley for that obvious reason

A very interesting reconstruction. As I understand it, there was nothing in front of Turnupseed that would have prevented his seeing the oncoming Porsche as he made his turn; he misjudged the speed the Porsche was travelling at, as police estimates of the speed pegged it as significantly higher than the posted limit. The earlier ticket might also have prompted Dean to try to make up for the lost time that ticket cost him, hence an even higher speed than he was doing previously.
The mechanic was expelled from the Porsche on impact and was found on the road. Dean was thrown to the passenger side of the car, feet caught under the pedals and head over the passenger door. The car Turnupseed was driving was almost double the weight of the Porsche, and it has long been speculated that had Dean moved left instead of right he would likely have avoided the collision.
Great reconstruction though - the intersection was modified several years later, so it no longer looks like it did when the crash occurred.

    1. Why would 'Welcome to NV' be on a sign going west in CA? West is the ocean. NV is east. 2. Rolf was thrown out of the car towards the driver side. Dean was slumped over the passenger seat with a foot stuck in the pedals. This is part of the controversy of who was actually driving. 3. The student was totally at fault for the crash, even per one of two police investigators. He turned in front of Dean. Its irrelevant that a silver car with no roof would be hard to see. Dean had right of way. Yet he got of free and clear thanks to the jury of fellow locals. 4. Dean's recent speeding and glamorous image, surely played against him as these rurals blamed him in a way. Thats life I guess. Only gone tomorrow, and here today.

The town is pronounced "Cho-lame." Turnipseed was traveling east on Hwy 466 and was planning on turning left onto Hwy 41 at the intersection when he collided with Dean's car. In effect, he turned left and right into the path of Dean's oncoming Porsche traveling west on 466 (now Hwy 46). The light aluminum Porsche was no match for the heavy 1950 Ford Tudor, and it flipped several times, the impact breaking James Dean's neck, which was the primary cause of his death. By the time his friend Bill Hickman and 'Look' Magazine photographer Sanford Roth arrived on the scene driving Dean's Ford station wagon pulling the empty trailer, it was too late. When asked at the subsequent inquest why he had turned and not waited, Donald Turnipseed stated that "I didn't see him."

About 20 years ago, I watched a video here in YT about this crash. It was created by a company that creates comparative analysis' of vehicles crashes, and they created one for Dean's crash. They estimated the true speed of Dean at about 55 mph.
This is was done by analyzing the resting spot of his car, where the cars hit, and the distance that both cars travelled after hitting each other and then stopping. They also compared different speeds and found that where Dean's car rested, which was against a telephone pole, he was probably travelling at 55 mph. Had he travelled faster, or slower, his car would have rested on either side of the pole. Very interesting computer simulation by a company that does this as a business.
Some witnesses that saw Dean and his passenger before the accident, state that Dean was not driving when the accident occurred.

In spite of the limited factual background - wind generators and the Nevada state line - I still enjoyed the recreation. FWIW, the timing between the ticket and the collision proves that Dean’s average speed between the two points was not over the speed limit. But of course average isn’t proof of his speed at the time of the collision. And that’s what it was, a collision. I too know the location, having driven past it many times in the 70s. It was not an “accident” but was due to Appleseed turning in front of the Porsche, which had the right of way. Regardless it was tragic - as are all fatal collisions.

    1) the car was too far into the turn, and wouldn’t have been able to correct itself for his turn in to work avoiding the collision.
    2) There was nothing to turn into but dirt and a fence which are still significant hazards.
The correct move should have been turn opposite of the car, use the adjacent lane as your area for correction after such a maneuver. Obviously if there was traffic behind the car then this would have been moot, but from what I can ascertain there wasn’t.

Three although not stated in the piece here it was estimated he averaged over 70 mph from the time of the citation to the accident scene.

hey frank, i just seen another simulation of great detail and close to this one's description but slightly off in simulation..this one has turnup starting the left turn early to keep up his speed as he apparently didn't see dean approaching. he drove that route almost weekly and at that area any other car/vehicle in past was 2x 3x bigger than deans as just pointing out possible mind/eye memory of turnup. this vid says half way thru the turn he see's dean and tries to come back right to clear dean's lane. the porche was noted always to skid left /right on hard braking during racing events. this vid showed dean skid right close to a t- bone with turnups left side on his right turn, they said a car behind who was passed by dean prior to intersection said dean was "hauling a.." (not their term) and on impact deans car did a completed flip and 360 spin airborne to landing. according to vid a inquest was held and found turnup turned into a speeding dean so they called it even, no charges.

The outcome was far from even, Dean was killed and the other guy bust his nose.

C'est pas de l'avant mais de derriùre qu'elle devrait sortir 😉

Very interesting well done recreation. Not to nitpick, but that intersection is nowhere near Nevada, so I'm confused by the "Welcome to Nevada" sign....

He gets pulled over for doing ten miles an hour over? Here in Ontario, Canada you can drive 120-130 km/h on the 401 which has a 100 km/h speed limit and they plan on raising it soon. Those same people will now be going 140-150 km/h.

When James Dean showed Alec Guinness the car, Alec had a premonition about the accident and laughed it off, also if Dean hadn’t been stopped for speeding, he might be alive today..

I think Dean’s car actually flipped and caused his head injury as it hit the asphalt. They said his funeral was a closed casket because of the damage done to his face and head. But I could be wrong.
