I hope to post a video of the new version of this engine in January but I don't think I will can to do that before. I will post the video of the casting of the new improved cylinder head too. Maybe in the middle of december.

great job mister Chris, really inspiring stuffs you always do. i would like to ask you some questions for help from your experience please. i am building a stirling engine from V-8 cylinder box engine of 8 cylinders each side (sounds a big one). i would like to ask you about the preferred diameter of the connecting pipes for the cylinders and the regenerator material and dimensions needed please.
Hi Chris, I am impressed by the compression you achieved. Is your cast iron piston/cylinder pairing running dry or lubricated? If it is possible to run dry I would try and test it. If it runs dry did you use any lubricant in the running-in process or did it run always dry? Greetings Ralf
Yes it runs dry. I have tried with and without lubrification. It runs much better without but it is more noisy. This seems very wear resistant. The engine ran about 6 hours and there is no traces of wear on pistons and cylinders. Only problem, the pistons are heavy. Lot of vibrations.
Very low power I suppose as the engine is on the video. Maybe 8 or 10 Watt, not more. I always tried machined teflon seals or FPM quadring seals. But without success. For a micro engine like this one, seals have too much friction and waste the most of the power of the engine. For a big engine things would be differents. The friction would be low compared to the engine's power.
Hard to say. I don't know the power of this one for the moment. I suppose it is less than the 38CC but the 38CC is bigger so it is normal. Both can be strongly improved. I think that their performances are close.
Great the performance of your engine, and a charming design. The piston free play inside the cylinder is 0.01mm ??? This project really has a great potential, when you develop a regenerator in your engine, I believe it will have a 25% improvement in performance, at least it was that gain I had in my homemade design. The free play is less than 0,01. Probably 0.005mm. I think I can increase the performance. I will make a new cylinder head and a new spacer that will allow to have a better circulation of the air between the two cylinders. At 2000 rpm the speed of the air inside the pipe is very hight and it becames very difficult for the engine to accelerate more. Ther is a lot of pressure loss inside this pipe.

Not yet. But I planned to try this winter. I have time to work on this subject only in winter. This engine is able to reach 2800 rpm without load. I designed a new cylinder head, a new spacer and a regenerator. I hope to reach 3500 rpm. I will try all that and the pressurization this winter and I will make a new video.
Hello my name is Esteban and I am a student currently doing my thesis and I would like to know what is the power of this motor and which is the approximate cost of it. Excellent work keep doing like that. Thank you and regards
Merci.
do you have any plans or mesuament of the piston and displacer. displacer head for this engine ? i want to build my own base on your design . please reply

Hello Chris! First of all, this is a truly great and inspiring work. Aren't you considering to add U-type thermal pipes-on-radiators to your heated cylinder? It'd be interesting to know which boost to rpm is produced.
It seems that your gas inside the cycle is just air. Some people say that it is better to work with hydrogen, or with helium. Do hydrogen or helium increase efficiency ?
Yes helium is better than air and hydrogen is better than helium. But to use them it is necessary to have perfetly sealed engine. Hydrogen is very dangerous. No risk with helium but it leaks easily. That's the reason why it is difficult to use. I made a try but with helium but it wasn't efficent.
Chris workshop : how can i contact you .I want to buy this engine of yours .can you please tell me the price and how to buy it from you .this is the best engine that i have ever seen so far . thank you
When we can buy it? I suppose, small stirling with generator on 15 - 50 watts on 5 and / or 12v was very demanded in market,if price was right.... stirling with pump was excellent market in heat pump and heating systems markets, especially, for water heated floor in suburbs, when you already have a wood for heating, but can have problem with electricity after a winter storm...
I suppose than you are right. Such a product can have a future and the price should be low. But for the moment this engine is not inough powerful. Only 5W but obtained with low amount of heat. And I am sure that is possible to strongly improve it. I work for that.
Circulation pumps in heating not demand much power - typical electric rating is about 30 to 50w. Problem is only, if use heated water from working contour, temperatures is bit low - obout 70 celsium for radiators system, and about 40c for heated floors - as i understand, the less is temperature difference, the less is stirling efficiency, and power with similar engine size. Thanks for working on that system. 5w electrical power is start to useable - that was 1A at usb charging ( phones, tablets and so), and that was fully enought for mobile lighting with LED in rural cabin, camping, and so on. Sure, you know, in about 1930 philips produced and sell stirling powered radios, and also nowadays norway or some country from that direction have a navy submarine with stirling propulsion. Maybe some details from that real “big” projects may help....
I am making a small axial flow generator made with only a 3D printer and hand tools. It is almost ready and soon I will post the vidéo of its making. I don't know how much power it will produce. But I think about 30W or more. For cabins with a stove and a Stirling engine, such a power can provide good light with LED and charge a phone. But this work is the beginning for the making of a much bigger CHP system wich will work with shredded wood that I produce with my homemade shredder. You can see on other videos on my channel this shredder and the heating system prototyp that use this shredded wood.
An alpha engine is an engine that have two pistons. Gamma engine (like Beta engine) has only one piston. So because my engine has two pistons it is an Alpha.
A gamma Stirling is like a beta Stirling, except the power piston is mounted in a separate cylinder, but the gas flows freely between them. It differs from an alpha in that it has a power piston and displacer piston, while an alpha has two power pistons.
Yep - an Alpha has *NO* displacer piston. Two cylinders don't make it an Alpha; two *power* pistons do. Since this quite clearly has a displacer piston, it's a Gamma. It's a*very nice* Gamma. Nothing wrong with it being an Gamma, but let's not muddy the waters with incorrect terminology. 😉
@@John_Weiss 358 / 5000 It looked like a Gamma to me too, but if you look closely at the assembly what would look like a displacer instead is a fixed integral part of the hot piston and they move together "without dislocation". They are just 2 cylinders, one hot and one cold (not a cylinder with displacer between hot and cold chambers plus power piston) so it is certainly an alpha.
It is not the hot piston and its cylinder which must be hot. It is the working gaz. The fins on the hot cylinders allows to extract the heat before it come into the crankcase and then into the cold side by conduction.
If you used less material between the hot and cold pistons you could probably make it more efficient. Ofc the crankshaft would be exposed to air if you wanted to oil it.

do you have any plans or mesuament of the piston and displacer. displacer head for this engine ? i want to build my own base on your design . please reply
very nice work!
Thank's
Do you sell these? Can you attach a power outlet to it to be able to plug in things?
Thank you Chris,Chris can you put the thing hit by flames,Inside my 600 deg F coal stove? Can it be remote?
Yes it can be heated in a stove. I don't understand your second question.
Can you tap into the heat source and have the motor a few feet away?Great job Chris, TY

just....wow
Whats the most efficient Stirling ?
Alpha Beta or Gamma Configuration?
I think that Alpha is the best. Then Beta and the less efficient is Gamma.
Hello Chris! First of all, this is a truly great and inspiring work.
Aren't you considering to add U-type thermal pipes-on-radiators to your heated cylinder? It'd be interesting to know which boost to rpm is produced.
Hello,
I m not sure to understand what you mean. You talk about using U-type thermal pipes as heat source?
It seems that your gas inside the cycle is just air. Some people say that it is better to work with hydrogen, or with helium. Do hydrogen or helium increase efficiency ?
Yes helium is better than air and hydrogen is better than helium. But to use them it is necessary to have perfetly sealed engine. Hydrogen is very dangerous. No risk with helium but it leaks easily. That's the reason why it is difficult to use. I made a try but with helium but it wasn't efficent.
Thanks.
Nice toy! Do you have kits?
Very interested in your unit, price Brisbane Australia or designs.
Do you sell this prototype?

I want to buy you one of your prototypes, how can I communicate with you
Bonjour,

Chris workshop : how can i contact you .I want to buy this engine of yours .can you please tell me the price and how to buy it from you .this is the best engine that i have ever seen so far . thank you
Sorry, not for sell.
I might be confused, but that looks like a gamma type Stirling engine as the hot piston looks like a displacer.

It looked like a Gamma to me too, but if you look closely at the assembly what would look like a displacer instead is a fixed integral part of the hot piston and they move together "without dislocation". They are just 2 cylinders, one hot and one cold (not a cylinder with displacer between hot and cold chambers plus power piston) so it is certainly an alpha.
why fins on the hot cylinder ?
It is not the hot piston and its cylinder which must be hot. It is the working gaz. The fins on the hot cylinders allows to extract the heat before it come into the crankcase and then into the cold side by conduction.
If you used less material between the hot and cold pistons you could probably make it more efficient. Ofc the crankshaft would be exposed to air if you wanted to oil it.
