    I am in awe of your wisdom and tenacity to do what is right. At nearly twice your age I choose not to eat animal products, (for all the same reasons you have listed, and more) but am ashamed to admit that I don't have the fortitude to break the law to stand behind my own values and ethics. The number of animals that you mentioned were killed annually was absolutely staggering, and even more so knowing it is only one year's worth. Thank you for sharing your story, and more importantly for being willing to physically take up the cause for the billions of innocent creatures who don't have a voice in their own defense. I didn't need convincing before to not kill or eat any animals, but it is clear that what I am doing now is definitely not enough.

      @sarahyak_  Před 3 lety +1

      Wow, I got chills reading this. It is such an empowering realization to see that we have the power to make big positive changes in the world - and that it is our duty to. I think it's beautiful that you choose not to eat animal products right now. And although I don't think you should feel shame for not breaking the law for these values, I think it's beautiful that you are interested in doing more for the cause in the future. I would love to see you at the Animal Liberation Conference in Berkely, California (where I got arrested) -the next time they are able to host a physical conference! Good luck on your journey

    I'm sure you've seen it and talked about it before but for those who aren't able to acknowledge the sentience of other creatures, a good documentary to watch is _What the Health_ , it really shows you how big business dominates what you are told is healthy or correct for your diet. If not moved by the torture of animals, maybe people will be moved by their own manipulation.

    Recent viewer here. I grew up on a farm. I have eaten meat most of my life. Intermitent vegetarian, intermittent vegan mostly because of cost/health not spiritual reasons. I have killed chickens, by my own "organic happy chicken farmer" hand raising control. It mattered that my kids understood where their food came from, it mattered because at the time we were food insecure, the eggs helped us not ask for handouts and helped us with some cash sales. It also mattered that no chicken we owned had a name.And the most chickens I had were 24 at a time, pastured. I grew up in East Africa, "nyame" is culturally celebratory, dogs are working, hunting or protection animals. I never have had, or will have a good "pet" relationship with dogs for that reason. Dogs in this US culture are the "mammys" of emotional support. Dog purpose is to WORK, not be anthropomorphised into instagram cute, like some objectified person. When I put this into Black Lives Matter, slavery context and when you put my meat realtionship into the context of personhood rather than nutrition, culture, it awakes and hurts my soul. I will do better, I will stop eating meat. Then I will evolve into a vegan diet once I really learn to cook tasty, celebratory meals that are not fake meat flavours because that hooks me back in! Food matters, tasty food really matters once survival is covered. We need a total revolution. Just like emancipation of slaves informed the womens movement, emancipation of meat objects matter too.

    OMG pretty girl, I had not been on your channel for a while; this video made me remember why I subscribed. I may not follow your chosen life style, however I do respect the passion you put into what you believe. At the end of the day, it is about choices and how they affect our surroundings, let it be people, animals, environment etc. you bring light to an important subject and yes, you are correct, it is more than just a pig, chicken or duck; we "humans" are in the same boat; big corperation makes no distinction. yup we all live in the same Blue Marble, we should do our part to make it a better place. I love your story times, do more. stay safe...hugs...143!

    I've watched so many of your videos and continue to be impressed with how much you know, how much you do, and how courageous you are, and at such a young age. I'm a baby boomer, and animal lover and semi-retired rescuer and activist, and it hurts to know that the abuse continues unabated by the big corporations. As more and more people tune in to the suffering, and take a stand through activism or how they eat, corporations will listen. It wasn't long ago that anyone who was vegan was seen as a kook, and now look at how many vegan eateries are popping up, and how much excellent vegan food is now on the market. I think, I hope, there will come a day when vegan or vegetarian is the norm, and meat eating is seen as barbaric. I will never tire of your videos and how cute, funny and smart you are! Keep up the good work, girl!

      One thing to keep in my mind is some aboriginal/native cultures live a climate were hunting is a necessity for their survival. As with the Buffalo in North America they only ate what they needed. So for us to tell them what their doing is inhumane is completely unjustified, IMO.

    • @watchtheduck1
      @watchtheduck1 Před 3 lety

      @@rscott2247 She was not suggesting that native cultures are prevented from doing what they need to do to obtain food. She was talking about the extreme cruelties of animal farming practices, big agri-farming, and that there is really no need for the mass killing of animals when so many alternatives now exist.

    I’m not vegan at the moment... but I will get there. I’ve been struggling to stick with it for a few different reasons. In high school, I lived with my sisters who weren’t very supportive of my oldest brother for being vegan. I, on the other hand, really looked up to him & wanted to become vegan. So, I asked him to give me some advice & he did but the only thing I remember him telling me is to be careful. That I needed to really do my research to keep myself healthy & I felt discouraged. I thought it would be too much work. I see now that I was wrong. So, I kept turning a blind eye knowing deep down that it was not okay. Ive forgiven myself for that so that I can move forward into my vegan life.
    I want to thank you, Sarah, for opening my eyes again & making me feel like I can make a difference🐄🐓🐖🐕🐈🐐🐘🐑🐠🐙🐍🦞🦀🤍

      That's such a great question! I am sure people think differently about abortion in the vegan community. I think it can be a pretty complex discussion. I like this video about it though (I'll link it below). I personally see both sides on the abortion topic and I believe in a balance between the two sides - where women still have a choice but it is taken seriously and there are regulations on what trimester you can have an abortion etc. I dont know though - I still have a lot to learn about it so I don't have a super firm belief yet.

    Some causes are lost causes.
    You dont fight for a lost cause.
    Fighting for it would not make any difference.
    Please, find yourself other, more feasible cause. I hate to see you get into trouble, for something you just cant change.

      How else would she be able to safely take care of her bird??

    • @sarahyak_
      @sarahyak_  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks for asking! My bird is domesticated so he would not be safe in the wild. He's not an experienced flyer and would not be able to escape predators or find food. If he doesn't have a harness he could fly off and hurt himself - so the harness is for his own benefit and safety. I spend most of my time outside and Zeus loves being outside, so living in a van means he will have the opportunities to do a lot of the things he loves but doesn't do while living with my parents. And his cage is kind of like his bedroom - it's a safe place for him to sleep and have alone time, not a place where he will be spending the majority of his time. I hope that makes sense and adds a little clarity! :) Next week I'm making a video all about Zeus so you can get a better idea of what this will look like for him
