दिल हू-हूम करे...प्रकृति के विविध स्वरूप वस्तुतः हमारे अंतर्मन को व्यक्त करते है। संयोग में जो प्रेयसी कोयल की कूक, मेघों की गर्जना, संगीत के स्पर्श में अल्हादित होती है वही वियोग की विरहाग्नि को पुष्ट करने वाले पद्मावत की नागमती को कोयल की कूक में दुःख का आभास होेता है (कुहुक-कुहुक जस कोइल रोई, रकत आंसु घुघुची वन बोई ) वहीं घन घमण्ड नभ गरजत घोरा, प्रियाहीन डरपत मन मोरा’ में श्रीराम की विरहदशा का अनुभव किया जा सकता है।
रुदाली के इस गीत में अर्द्धरात्रि में नीरवता को चीरती हाथ से चलने वाली चक्की की ध्वनि प्रेयसी के हृदय को रुलाते हुए सुनहरे सपने का दलन कर रही है। गुलजार ने दिल को धक-धक धड़कने की जगह हूम-हूम का प्रयोग शायद इसलिए किया कि धक-धक में श्रंगार रस की प्रधानता है जबकि हूम-हूम में करुणा की। क्योंकि विस्तृत नभ का कोई कोना, उसका कभी नहीं हो सका। दुःख, नैराश्य और विवशता की भूमि से निर्मित कठोर सतह पर प्रेम के अंकुर की पनपने की प्रबल आकांक्षा सामाजिक बाड़े में उलझकर दम तोड़ती है।
हूम-हूम के करुणामयी द्वंद से हृदय व्याकुल है। मेघो (बादलों) की गर्जना से मन सहम जाता है। कभी तो मेरी आंखों की पलको में एक बद भी आये जिसे बरसाकर मैं तृप्त हो जाऊॅ।
( स्वयं के दुःख पर जिसके आंसू सूख गये है अर्थात पथरा गईं हैं वही रुदाली जगत के दुःखों पर आंसू बहाकर तृप्त होने की कामना करती है )
मैं जानती हूं कि तुम्हारे स्पर्श से अनेक उमंग अंकुरित होते हैं। झूठी दिलासा पर ही सही लेकिन इस ओर बढ़ते कदमों पर ही मेरा अस्तित्व कायम है। अन्यथा मेरा जीवन पत्तियों सा कुम्हला जाता।
हे प्रियतम आपके प्रेमस्पर्श से जो अंग खिल उठा है उसे तो लाजवश ढक लूंगी लेकिन जिस हृदय को तेरे रसभरे नैन के तीर भेद गये हैं जिसने चन्द्रमा की शीतल चाॅंदनी से तन को झुलसा दिया है उसे कैसे व्यक्त करू? क्योंकि अट्टालिका पर निवास करने वाले हे प्रियतम नैतिकता और सामाजिक वर्जनाओं में आबद्ध कल्प संयोग रूपी पंख कतर चुके हैं।
