    Lyrics
    It's tooth for tooth
    And eye for eye
    We hide our hearts
And then we won't say why
    It's truth for truth
    And lie for lie
Such is the language of love

I used to try to play this when I bought my 1st guitar right around the time this came out. I taped it on cassette from the radio and would practice. Once my mom and sister overheard me, and knocked on my room door. I expected a "TURN THAT DOWN!!" but instead got encouragement "you're getting better". My sister (who actually had Dan's album "The Innocent Age") thought it was Rick Springfield who did this. Mom didn't know who either was.

Dan could and did a wide range of music. I wish he had dealt more with the bluegrass genre. But he understood what his audience was and did not disappoint. I think a true fan of Dan would have given him more leeway and would allow him to explore other avenues of musical expression. If you have not invested in more of his albums I recommend Portrait. A good mix of different styles of music. You will find that he could write and sing and play a wide variety of musical styles. His hits are there too. But if you just stop at those songs you will miss out on the depths of his true soul. Yes, cancer robbed us of his most wonderful talent. One of the few who could meld beautiful words and phrases into musical pictures, a talent that I also find comforting in Gordon Lightfoot music. There are millions who perform but few can really touch the soul. Dan did!

@@AmyLSacks I think that Dan wanted to explore that side of the music spectrum more but I am not sure his core audience would "go along with that ride". He was great at what he produced. I know playing a certain style of music can pigeon-hole your creative side. Ricky Nelson was a poster child of that. Dan had other passions-art, boating, ranching that even if the buying public could not appreciate him spreading his wings musically that he found outlets elsewhere.

Fogelberg could play rock n roll, folk, jazz or country better than anybody. A stellar guitarist, lyricist and songwriter their is no one who can touch him. Some better song writers like Dylan? Maybe. Better guitar player, like Clapton? Not by much. This artist could play, write and sing with his combination of talent, better than anybody. It’s a sham and a crime, he is not in the rock n roll Hall of fame. Joan Jett and Kiss instead of Fogelberg? They’ve lost their damn minds.

I haven't heard this song since it was played regularly on the radio in the early 1980s. Thank you posting...and, for the memories. :)

Dan did not like doing videos. First, he wasn't real comfortable doing them and second, he wanted the person to listen to his music and use their own imagination about the songs. And the rose on his lapel represented ,passion. Miss him still...

Very catchy tune from an underrated singer/guitarist. I always thought that if Dan hadn't gone solo & had they wanted him, he would've been a natural fit for the Eagles with his great harmonies, powerful voice & folk/rock songwriting abilities.

D Mc. Wow, I didn’t know that. Well it didn’t seem to slow him down any but would’ve been very interesting to see how the Eagles would’ve sounded with Dan as a member. Anyway, thx for the info.
