  • Trucks were out in record breaking numbers at this year's Southern California ATHS truck show! A lot of big rigs, commercial vehicles, buses, and classic pickups were out there this year at the Southern California Railway Museum in Perris, California to support the show, hosted by the Southern California chapter of the American Truck Historical Society. We were glad that many truckers came out to support this years event. Thank you to the members of SoCal ATHS for always organizing one of our favorite events of the year!

      @ElToro66 - Crown and Gillig dominated the school bus market for many years in CA. The three-axle Crowns were very popular among districts that had long routes, mountain routes, or needed the high capacity (97 passengers!)

    • @j.scottmcdonough562
      @j.scottmcdonough562 Před 3 lety

      Most 3 axle school buses were 90 passengers, the 97 passenger have very little leg room for kids over 6th grade. Crown was top dog on this type but Gillig, Thomas, and Blue Bird all tried to compete with their own 3 axle school buses but the Crown Coach was always the best.

    I love that chubby look of these 1940s - 60s vintage US trucks / pickups! A good example bumbles past at 2:50! The noise of the engines is so much different from what we hear today; V8s that could fit a medium - sized ship, as downsizing was an unknown word back then!

    This is a brilliant video. If someone asked me to choose one truck to take home it would be one of the 1960's needle nosed tractors. I had a 1967 needle nose Pete that had hauled heavy during the Alaskan Pipeline days. Unfortunately, it had a Detroit 318 and a 5 X 4 tranny that had no remaining synchronisers so we ended up selling it.

    • @russlong5114
      @russlong5114 Před 3 lety +1

      @@claytonbrown7100 - - Eagles with a tag axle were Model 01s, built from 1956 thru 1968. All Eagles built after that were either 96" wide Model 05s or 102" wide Model 10s. By moving the drive axle rearward by using a dropbox and positioning the tag (now called a "bogie" among bus folk) in front of the drivers, this allowed much more baggage bay space and hence more revenue from "downstairs." This, of course, was in the days before FedEx (and UPS's expansion to compete with FedEx), when bus companies hauled a lot of parcel express, especially on the rural "milk run" routes.

    Is that Crown supercoach is twin-screw or a tag?

    • @russlong5114
      @russlong5114 Před 3 lety +1

      @Clayton Brown - It depends on how the School District ordered it from Crown. Some were just tags, others were twin-screw. Generally speaking, tho, the districts with a lot of mountain runs used the twin-screws along with 10-spd RoadRanger transmissions. Interesting trivia: Some of the twin-screws also had the interlocks, again, depending on what the district ordered.
