  • In this video, we are going to discuss about bearing capacity of soil and why we care about the bearing capacity of a soil. We all know that all civil engineering structures whether they are buildings, bridges, dams or tunnels etc. are built on soils.
    Therefore, a foundation will be required to transmit the load of the structure on a large area of soil. So, let's discuss the bearing capacity of soil.

    The bearing capacity of the soil is as important as the structure itself

      The bearing capacity of the soil is very important. Because a bad bearing capacity will mean the Foundation will not be able to hold the structure when earthquake or wind load occurs. Which will make the structure fail quickly in shear.

    I compute it by computing the Load the Footing carries in kilograms or kilonewtons divided by Length multiplied by Width of Footing , kG/m2, then the soil capacity in kg/m2 will be compared, then the Soil Capacity should be larger than the Load / meter squared.

    Can I ask? What is the Ultimate Soil Pressure? In kPa

    • @Innotutorial
      @Innotutorial  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Daniela. It will depend on the type of structure which is going to be resting on the soil. Usually 100Kpa for under strip footing and 50kpa for under slab footing. Is that clear enough?
