  • Follow Corporal Clarke as he practices his Gunnery skills on the TAP-V in our newest entry of the RIDE ALONG series!
Meet Corporal Elijah Clarke, a member of The British Columbia Regiment (Duke of Connaught's Own). Ever since the third grade, Clarke has wanted to join the military - his mother claims it was the first thing he ever said he wanted to do when he grew up. Clarke was drawn towards the Armoured Reconnaissance trade because of the variety of work it entails. Armoured crewman drive armoured vehicles, operate vehicle weapons systems, take part in dismounted infantry work, perform vehicle maintenance, and, in the case of the British Columbia Regiment; practice IA (Influence Activities). Clarke’s advice to those who want to join Armoured Reconnaissance is to have an open mind and be ready to learn a lot of different skills. “As a crewman, you get to experience a lot of really cool moments as well as a lot of challenging moments, the important thing is to practice and continue to work hard.” Clarke is one of many reservists in the Canadian Army that train to augment, sustain and support deployed Regular Force members when needed.

To the image techs who made this: hats off to you guys, this rocks. So much better than the ‘old days’ footage from 5 years ago, and the social media spot for this was right on queue for me. As a soldier, I don’t feel like cringing seeing this, and I’m shocked that it’s official Canadian Army video. Way to go!

About 40-odd years ago, I served in a reserve armoured recce unit, where our main vehicles were ancient M38CDN and then-relatively new M151 jeeps with a GPMG mounted on a pintle that was bolted into the side of the vehicle, next to the crew commander's position. If a vehicle like the TAP-V had been issued to us to replace the jeeps, everyone in my unit, me included, would have thought that we had died and gone to heaven.

It is so bizarre to see troops in the same unit, same profession I was in years ago, using WAY different equipment, wearing different uniforms, and using the same language, behaving the same. It's like glimpsing an alternate dimension!

Well, this certainly is an improvement on the 80's, laying in a field, trying to look fierce behind my C2, while making "Bang! Bang! Bang!" sounds because we couldn't even afford blanks. Cheers to this generation, their dedication and enthusiasm. Any of you "old guys" whining about the young folks not holding to the same values or work ethic. You are partly right. They don't and can't be the same as us. They have the potential to do better, smarter and faster than we did. Cuidich 'n Righ

@@tristenlittke7593 Tbh being sad is part of the infantry, it's a suffering mentality. Our job doesn't have anything flashy, our courses are hard and painful. It's always the same routine.
For the homeless part it's indeed pretty sad, it's less prevalent in Canada than the US. But it still happens nonetheless, one key factor is alcohol and drug abuses after release. Normally being medically discharged allocates you either a pension or a compensation deemed sufficient. The system for this is slow and ineffective. A buddy of mine has a had a pension for an elbow pain he barely feels anymore. But it was proven that it was duty related injury.
