  • Of Monsters & Men’s Nanna on Godzilla Movies, Aaron Desner, & Freezing Her Buns on a Glacier
Of Monsters & Men co-founder Nanna joins Kyle Meredith to reveal the story behind her debut solo album, How To Start A Garden. The singer explores working with The National’s Aaron Desner, being inspired by old Godzilla movies, and being a hermit kid who loved poetry. She also tells us about releasing a song in her native Icelandic language for the first time and breaking into a national park to shoot the album cover on a glacier.

I would probably by an album if Nanna simply just spoke or read something for an hour. Such a calming voice to listen to. Like rain drops or snowflakes falling.

Thanks for doing the interview! I have quite literally not been able to stop listening to OMAM since I discovered them! Nanna is my favorite female vocal of the last 10 years! Already have my tickets for her Minneapolis concert in August. I’m a luthier who has guitars in the hands of some of Prince’s fellow musicians…..I would love to build a boutique guitar for Nanna!

I've been a huge OMAM fan since they came out when I was 11. They actually inspired me to start learning Icelandic

Her own project can definitely stand on it's own and is very solid musically. It has a different feel from OMAM. It's a little darker

Oh my God. First I love OMAM, From raggagun to now I believe her horn played a very big part of the band. When you lose or a band member moves on its hard to recoup so to say but when the band is strong by moving onward n make due or replace and their still going strong that's says alot about the band. Now I've witnessed that when a member of that strong circle or group goes off on a side project 🤔 it's almost a jynx or bad luck for that band only because when the group has to make decisions on moves songs or whatever the case may be and it's usually the one who plays a big part of the group that is absent when certain imperative decisions had to be made that's where the bad luck will come to play and that's when the questions will arise. Then soon the arguments soon everyone is solo and the only one who benefits from it 99% of the time is the singer aka the backbone...however there still will be
"A band" that will carry the name but it will be only 2 or 3 original members.
Idk I hope I'm wrong because I love these guy I followed them sine the beginning and I've had the opportunity to see them at a lala palooza in Phoenix Arizona.
