No , The problem is as we live in India, is there any language called Indian?? No nah?? So there's no problem in that! But here there is a language called Assamese , so it became more like a linguistic term than a geographical
The original speakers like kalita Bamuns are the Assamese / Axomiya ! but many communities like ahom , chutia. , kuch etc also called themselves as " Assamese" because they totally accepted Assamese language and their culture and traditions!
But the tribals like Bodo , Karbi , Mishing etc don't want to called " Axomiya" . Because of term itself is overshadowing of their tribal language , culture and traditions!!

yes you are right at present scenario only upper caste portrays they are pure assamese because tribal communities are neglecting that adminstrative language and giving opportunity to upper caste to grab or stealing that legacy/history.

In assam there are two major demand of seperate state 1) Bodoland 2) Kamatapur and recently arised a new demand of seperate Upper Assam. Govt. should think on it very deeply before the situation get worse. Either create Bor Assam including all demanding states or seperate states for each demand. But in my opinion if someone reiterately wanting a seperate state among them can get seperate and creating other two new states by joining them into rest places by naming BorAxom. We all from assam demanding seperate state are the son of soil from ancient roots... But newly demanding Upper Assam has more of immigrants (and not Son of Soil)
