  • On this 2010 E63 AMG we have fault codes for the intake camshaft cold start performance, being over-advanced, and other codes relating to the intake camshaft. Mercedes code 1212 and P0011-71 are two of those codes. In this video I am recording the camshaft movement in relation to the VVT cam gear. watch closely and you will see the camshaft jump without the gear then the gear moves without the camshaft. This indicates a faulty VVT gear. This seems to be a common issue on Mercedes on multiple engine packages with higher mileage, typical but not limited to engines with over 100k. This is bank 2 intake camshaft. For bank one you will have to listen for the camshaft jumping as there is no convenient hole to look through to watch it.

Shouldn't the natural rotation go clockwise, not counter clockwise?

I am turning the engine clockwise, however the intake camshaft is gear driven by the exhaust camshaft so it rotates counterclockwise.
