  • Tom Hiddleston describes the hardness of Shakespeare's great hero Coriolanus, as a man who has denied himself, and feels invulnerable. The character lives at the pitch of extremity, with extraordinary physical courage.
He's speaking with director of the Donmar Warehouse production, Josie Rourke. It was filmed live on-stage at the Donmar in 2014, by National Theatre Live.
You can watch the Donmar Warehouse’s Coriolanus from 7pm UK time on Thursday 4 June until 7pm UK time on Thursday 11 June 2020, with National Theatre at Home.

Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch and Andrew Scott need to be in the same play together so they can show their nerdiness over Shakespeare.

I’m always impressed and delighted with how articulate Tom Hiddleston is. Kind of wish he had a podcast! Thank you for this video - a great insight into his way of approaching and understanding the character.

I wish I could articulate my thoughts half as well as Tom Hiddleston does... I’ve seen this adaption of Coriolanus twice in the cinema over the last few years - I’m looking forward to watching it again! I generally enjoy Shakespeare’s comedies more than his tragedies but I find this adaption captivating.

These characters.. the ones unable to give into any "humane" emotion.. like even smiling. The ones who deny themselves any feeling other than the adrenaline.. or the pseudo satisfaction they get from turning this craving of emotions into their agression and bravery. They put a mask of "never being able to lie" but they are constantly lying to themselves, by forcing themselves to be impenetrable and invulnerable. And it's just that.. they can fight the wars.. and the battles and people in their lives.. trying to find an answer to the question they aren't brave enough to even put in words in their minds. These characters are cowards.

But it's these characters who are shockingly the ones who are most true to real people, if you look around. How many people try to search the cause for their struggles everywhere but in themselves? To me it makes people lost and helpless, for they don't trust themselves, but characters in films and plays it makes interesting, for they are giving me hope that some of the people who deny themselves might change.
