BIMHUIS TV Presents: Bill Stewart Trio feat Larry Grenadier and Walter Smith III

- New trio led by American drummer known for his collaborations with John Scofield and Pat Metheny.
Walter Smith III tenor saxophone, Larry Grenadier double bass, Bill Stewart drums.
Bill Stewart has been one of the most in demand drummers in jazz for over thirty years. Recently he formed a new trio under his own name, featuring his contemporary Larry Grenadier on bass, and the younger tenor saxophonist Walter Smith III. Their mastery leaves Stewart enough space to shape his own compositions. Their album Band Menu (released in 2018) sounds understated and melodic, yet rich in form and invention.
Bill Stewart has performed at the BIMHUIS many times in the successful bands of John Scofield. He also played here with Chris Potter, in the organ trio with Larry Goldings and Peter Bernstein, in Chris Potter’s band, but also twice before with a trio of his own. Together with Larry Grenadier he has played in the bands of Scofield and Pat Metheny. Grenadier is best known from the Brad Mehldau Trio. Walter Smith II has played with, among others, Roy Haynes and Ambrose Akinmusire. - Hudba
My 2 favorites, Bill & Brian Blade, dynamic, sensitive, melodic drummers.
Yah those two. Greatest of their generation that I've heard. Keepers of the flame 🔥
Agree 1000%
also my 2 favorites!
Bill Blade!? How come I’ve never heard of him
I totally agree Bill Stewart and Brian Blade 2 of the very best, tasty, complete, melodic, sensitive swinging drummers, and both equally capable to drum for James Brown or any progressive rock project
the perfect drummer between modern and tradition
Bill StewART, pure ART, MIND-BLOWING AS ALWAAAAAAAYS
This guy is one of the best drummers in the world and 9 out of 10 people probably have no idea who the hell he is. If he was alive back in the 50s when jazz was the most popular music he would been one of the most well known drummers alive. There's really nobody I know that plays like Bill Stewart.
Amazing sound quality of this video too since his drums sound like they are right in my room.
Yeah.. But then again, he wouldn't have his sound without those drummers from the 50's, 60's, 70's etc.. I hear all of that in his playing - Elvin, Max, Roy, Tony. These were the pioneers.
You are so right in that he is one of the very great drummers. In my opinion only Bill Stewart and Brian Blade are true successors of the classic master like Tony, Elvin, Roy etc. There are a lot of great and skillful players one of them is Eric Harland. But very few have developed a style where you only need to hear a few notes and you instantly know it is them.
I met Bill Stewart 10+ years ago when he was playing with Steve Swallow and John Scofield supporting the En Route album. I saw them at the Dakota and then next morning I found myself in line to get coffee at the Hotel and there was Bill Stewart in front of me. As a drummer, I asked him who he gets inspiration for his phrasing from and he told me "Roy Haynes". That was the greatest live musical performance I have ever seen.
John Breskind neither do more people know who tony or elvin was outside jazz circles
@@CharlieWeller @Chazwick what means "but then again" of course there is a story behind his performance. can't I appreciate a jazz drummer like Bill because he's not a pioneer?
Nobody sounds like Bill, he´s the King!!! Amazing Trio
Lovely tunes played by a fantastic trio.
Shout out to whoever is taking care of the sound reproduction: the drums sound fantastic, the bass is warm and resonant and clear, and the sax sound is on point as well...It's SO refreshing to see/hear a venue that employs folks who know how to mix the sound for this music!
Deep gratitude for posting this...🙏❤🤗
Bill Stewart is my teacher and he doesn't even know it ! Thank you, master !
OH!....thank goodness!! It's not a set of generic DWs
The precise placement of those HH beats at 15:05 just kills me every time!
Great writing! so much of modern jazz is so lost in the weeds of it's own complexity. This was complex enough but enjoyable. Bill stewart, Legend
Bill is the GOD of Jazz drumming. No doubt about it!
!!!!!!!!!! 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹👋👋👋👋👋 It's wonderful and beautiful!!! Fantastic! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

This is so good! Bill is literally one of the most unique and instantly identifiable voices in jazz history. He seems to have an endless array of ideas and everyone has multiple directions it can go. I can never get enough of his playing. Thank god for this!
Impeccable ride beat, incomparable dynamics&phrasing, impossible time.
Bill Stewart, my all time fav.
his work with timbers and textures and melody on the drumset is just always wonderful .. one of the things I always loved about Bill is the fact that he's so melodically clear that you can see "thru" his playing, you can understand everything he does... I've heard so many times that DeJonette is a melodic drummer and I kind of agreed, until I heard Bill for the first time
Such a beautiful and emotional concert. I’m glad to see Bill leading his own bands and I very much look forward to meeting him someday.
Bill, Walter and Larry are some of my favourite musicians on earth. Listening to them playing together is just pure pleasure. Thanks for this video!
Jazz perfection and the setting at Bimhuis is always ideal even with the curtains open and you see the trains traversing in the background adding a nice kinetic feel with the intimately minimalism yet intricate compositions and brilliant musicians who don't make one feel a chord instrument is missing!!! Always loved Bill's sophisticated ministratons with ANY group...Schweeeeeet!!!
I’m very fortunate to get to regularly play with bassist Forest Stewart who is a relative of Bill’s. Something special in that Stewart DNA.
Bills playing is just beautiful.
Had the Liberty of seeing Bill play a small venue near my hometown with Scofield just a few years ago and he was just an absolutely stellar unbelievable drummer..
Walter, a beautiful player!!
Words cannot tell you how I feel, it was an emotional ride.
A wonderful musician, I've liked him for a long time, since working with John Scofield.A very worthy trio.
Great sound! Also love the traffic at the background.. Bimhuis is such a great place!
Magiic, Intense, Charismatic what else? great music
Mastering!!!! greatfully thks Masters
Thank You Bimhuis!! Amazing concert, wonderful musicians, great jazz
Love Bill's work with Sco, but this is my favorite live 'Bill' performance. Add lighting, the scenery outside (like a painting), just amazing overall.
Les solos de Bill Stewart sont si bien structurés que l'on touche à la perfection.
Loved it! 🎶🥁🎶
Fantastic band -- thanks for posting!
Amazing!!!
Love this so much! Especially great are the shots of Bill smiling and enjoying the music so much. The three sound so so so great!
Amazing concert
Outstanding band. Thnx 👍
Awesome thanks for sharing.
Amazing 👏
wonderful
Magnificent !
Beautifully recorded
That Bill writes some great tunes, too. A real musician 👍❤️
gorgeous
Very good
This is great! And I love how much the band is enjoying it too.
What a Great Trio.
That ride!
Larry's solo on the second tune is so tasteful. (9:30) In this setting with no true harmony instrument, he perfectly outlines the harmony (even if it's a blues) and just plays it beautifully with flawless time, groove and intonation, what a joy!
It be fun to here LG lay down a solo on some old P bass
Atmospheric and enthralling!❤️
Great video edition
from another world
GREAT
Bill is phenomenal!!
Perfect drums sound. Perfect balance.
He is such a good Musician on them Drums
¡No la llevo a misa pero la traigo al Sargento los viernes! ¡Vamaa Bill! Tremendo trío.
Bill Stewart, the best!!
Great trio, led by one of the top shelf modern jazz drummers. Bill Stewart is a favourite...fantastic phrasing
still love your drumming!!
yeah!
Delish!
Sooooo groovy...
Incredible as always! We could definitely use an F U JOE at this point too though.
ca a l air tellement facile et evident ....bill me donne vraiment envie de jouer .....
The one and only.
I think “F-U Donald” is a masterpiece composition. It’s so catchy even my kids like it…
wunderbar - Energie + Emotion + Struktur
Come to Argentina, Bill, please!!
My Favs:
Fing Fast 30:30
Space Acres 50:20
oh yeah
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🔥
I feel so sorry that their audience presumably got cancelled. Still a brilliant gig and we're all enjoying it here online.
What happened?
@@felipemendozar COVID19 happened. 😢
Great set. Bill Stewart is playing some of the most interesting music in the band. Sax, Bass and Drums is my least favorite Jazz format, but, in this case I found it interesting because the drumming is so good.
Have you listened to Walter's album TWIO? Great trios in that album. Made me fall in love with sax trios :)
Oh nice. What is the cymbal of the left ? Zildjian 18' ?
Ahhh! Those ride/crash cymbals!!!? Signature series Zildjians?
LH Ride is an old Zildjian, Main Ride is his Signature Ride, and the other is a Zildjian Soundlab Prototype.
Larry said, there’s no piano? Hold my beer
Great music, thanks! What brand drums are those?
I think they are Leedy. Have a Google of vintage Leedy drums, and the lugs look about right.
They look like Sonor 70s, with plastic lugs. The bass drum feet are a giveaway. Best to ask someone at Bimhuis though; its their house kit.
@@SebCo77 I think you’re right!
Anyone know the name of that first tune?
Is Bill's left-side ride a 20" or 18" ?
💿💿💿💿
Sheesh Walter
Anyone knows what mics is used for bass here?
MB and a Schoeps MK4!
@@islavanhout38 thanks!
At 14:08 there is something weird on Bill's ride cymbal. Anybody know?
It's tape across the underside bow if the cymbal, with some hanging down at right angles. Might be deliberate...might have fallen off a bit.
I believe it is an old school sizzle you just put on the post under the cymbal. It vibrates against the cymbal casing the effect of a sizzle or something like that, I have seen one somewhere before.
Anyone know what song they’re playing at 50:51?
space acres, off his album snide remarks
que concierto mas soporifero por dios
and...hello Joe There is a time and place for everything. Good bye
Meeee
Even the tune titles are brilliant, e.g. nr 3 F.U.Donald... if I heard it correctly...
for aliens
i think the bass is a little to low in the mix
Well no, the following.
Dead audience
Unfortunately no audience was allowed due to COVID restrictions .. the few you hear is the bimhuis crew
@@mideka74 😓
Sorry but the drums are too much to the fore of the trio. It's like the drums are soloing the sax is just noodling along as a accompanist .
Was really enjoying this until he had to get all political with his “F U Donald” song/statement. Just play your instrument and spread joy. tired of fellow musicians, celebrities and sports figures always trying to make statements (that goes for all parties - red, blue, black, green, yellow doesn’t matter). Want to make a statement stop playing music and go be a politician and see if you can do better.
Jazz, like all art, has always been political. Bebop itself was an artform created for the black musicians to stop jazz from getting watered down by white people.
I take offense to the title tune "FU Donald". Donald is much better than Biden and also my favourite dancer after Thelonius Monk.
Look at you all now. Half the NY jazz scene is born in tel aviv
Nothing musical here
