- Today we are going to be reviewing The Coen brothers debut film from 1984 Blood Simple. Not many debut features look as good as this movie does, a film deserving a 4k blu ray upgrade. The @criterioncollection has upgraded heir 2016 release to 4K blu ray and today i'm going to let you know if it is worth your time and money!

I'm upgrading my older movies and appreciate your work. Picked up the 4k restoration of Silent Running from Arrow films. They did a fantastic job too. So appreciate there are companies out there doing this to older loved movies for film buffs and people who love a particular movie and want to see it at it's best.
Thank you so much I really appreciate that! And that’s exact what I love to see too. These studios upgrading the classics is great. I have always preferred film before the year 2000. I still love modern film but my favorites all came from older eras and blending that with modern technology is a dream come true.
John, I now have an immediate urge to pick up this 4K. Despite loving this film for its simplistic greatness like Le Samourai, I’ve passed on this Criterion Blu-ray many times these years simply because there are so many other titles I prioritized to owning, and I try to not get carried away even when I do hauls on B&N sales. I also have the 2011 barebone Blu-ray and owe myself this well-rated upgrade on one of the greatest low budget American film debuts by the Coens! I’m also upgrading my Fargo when it goes on sale😎
That’s the same blu ray I had! This wasn’t one that I always would run back to so I always would skip the Criterion blu ray. When it got announced for 4K though I figured it was time to upgrade lol. And to be honest the new 4K made me look at the movie in a new light and really appreciate it. Fargo is my favorite of their films and the 4K is great but I do think Blood simple is the better 4K overall.

These 4K releases are grrat
It’s releases like this that make me love 4K. When you can see a noticeable upgrade from the blu ray releases it just makes it worth it

So glad this movie is getting an upgrade 🎉 we really need these studios to step up and upgrade so many more movies that are just begging to be upgraded. A movie that springs to mind that Edward Norton was in apart from Fight Club of course was the classic American History X. Now that needs a 4k upgrade! Instant buy!
@021om6 Absolutely!!! American History X which its blend of black and white and that Gritty color would be great on 4K. I also don’t want that movie to get lost to time. I’m glad they’re upgrading Primal Fear, Honestly wasn’t expecting that one at all.

Does the Criterion 4K come with the regular Blu-ray or no ?

I’m not sure when the first Criterion sale is of the year. It’s either March or May I believe. Definitely a steal when it drops to 50% off

I think you would love it Stuart. It’s not as polished like other Coen brothers movies but it’s still definitely in line with their other work.

Hey John, disappointing Criterion didn't do a 2024 4k remaster with dolby atmos 😖
I know I would have liked a new audio track. The one that’s on here is fine but I think there was potential for greatness. The Visuals are great though.
You do have a good point. An Atmos track would take a lot of work and it might not even be worth it. It’s very strange they didn’t include the mono track and only give us one option. I always think if you can give us everything previously released and give us a new track that way you have options. But if it can’t be done I also appreciate that. The 5.1 on here was mostly front heavy anyway.
