I hope this includes the hardest retro challenge of all: trying to sneak down at night to play without waking up your parents
That was some real life Metal Gear stuff!
That'll be in the dlc
It's still a challenge to this day.
why i made the switch to pc: I no longer have to use the coughing strat to avoid sound detection.
@@falcon1378those of us senior enough PC gamers remember the struggle of the coughing strat to get downstairs and then having to muffle the 56k modem handshake from “alerting the guards”.
I like how between every challenge Andy's mustache falls off then regrows for the sofa scenes.
Lol I didn't notice, that's hilarious
They also switch clothes
I'm old enough to remember when games were much harder but what people neglect to mention when getting dewey eyed about the good old days is that they were often very light on actual content and padded their length massively with high difficulty and limited lives.
And games were made artificially harder so people would rent it more often or just buy it.
Part of that has nothing to do with dev laziness or executive greed, but pure technical restrictions. Difficulty as more content takes up less space than actual new content/levels. Its only relatively recently that game devs no longer have to think about disc/cartridge size limits. Even FNV ran out of disc space
@@AbsolXGuardian Yeah OG Pokemon Red would have had twice as many pokemon and a full open-world map if they'd had modern limits on memory space.
....but if you actually completed one of these games you felt amazing. I will say now as a 37 year old I am not capable of spending the time to get good at games, but as a kid completing a hard game, or just watching my big brother do it, was brilliant.
Yeah I don't miss any of it. QoL improvements keep you from going insane and throwing your console of choice out of the window.
I feel like Antstream would benefit from a mode that displays what the equivalent of how many quarters you would have spent playing thus far, as the spending more money to try again was an important part of the meta back then.
This just shows how much there needs to be a new video of Arcade Cabinet. C'mon Mike! Drag Andy kicking and screaming along! Or at least mildly protesting how disapproving he is of the situation.
Im old enough to remember arcades, and honestly loved that games got easier when they were no longer meant to Hoover up quarters out of your pockets lol
Same. Admittedly, it took little me years to realize that putting money into the machine got you off of the title/teaser screens. As in, from 1988 until the early 2000s. I later learn this was because my parents deliberately kept the knowledge from me by distracting me the second an older kid approached the game cabinet so I never saw anyone pay...right up until I was a teenager. So I didn't spend nearly as many quarters as I could have thanks to parental interference. Fun memories!
Lost so much money to AvP back in the day
I grew up with a ZX Spectrum. I genuinely don't know if a lot of the games I played even had endings. And you couldn't just Google a walkthrough, you had to hope the magazine you bought had one, or at least some tips. Or that the cassette on the front of the mag had some POKEs for your game.
Get off my lawn you damn kids.
I have no regrets about how many quarters I spent... However I do love this arcade... About an hr away I pay to get in and have unlimited gameplay.
Tips for metal slug:
-go as fast as you can, from what I remember the enemies outside of scripted encounters which block your way are infinite so going slow just uses up any limited ammo types you have.
-conserve ammo, no holding down a non homing special weapon.
-with a metal slug, go as fast as you can, there are fuel pick ups for the fleet of foot which restores durability
-learn the patterns after all that is all the game really is.
Also, use your damned grenades!
Mike at the intro: messy long hair and beard.
Mike during the MK challenge: hair freshly cut, clean shave, fresh as a lettuce lol
The magic of cinema
They both look disheveled and hungover in the intro video. They must of had a bad night before or too good of one. LOL
@@Dreamrushyyz Mike is a dad, that’s how I look on a normal day…except I lost my hair between kid 2 and 3. Andy, he’s just doing the Morgan thing lol
@@fede35mm Well the Morgan thing must have involved lots of rum.
woah theres two Andy variants in this one video! this is rare stuff
Mike too! Both went from very shaggy to clean cut
The best Space Invaders strategy is to eliminate the side columns first, as they take more time to cross before they descend.
I don't now how you would defeat Declan Donnelly as an end-of-level boss, but you might be able to defeat Ant McPartlin with a paintball gun?
HE CANNAE SEE 😅😅 Underated comment!
Anyone else think Andy’s moustache is giving hardcore Morgan monday flashbacks 😂
Powerful moustache is it
Hoping for a Blades in the Dark return.
Mike and Andy videos always make me smile. It’s so strangely wholesome.
Still loving Andy's moustache, he looks like an "odd gentlemen" in a game who's revealed to have killed your parents day 1
Immediately got some childhood flashbacks from watching that Goro fight
All the Metal Slug games are great fun! A joy to see it here.
Yeah retro games weren't designed as 'get gud' they were just designed to take your quarter while giving you just enough endorphins to keep playing.
Did you know that when SNK made Metal Slug the brief was more or less "Everyone is talking about 3d, we can't do 3d so we need to make the 2d animation look so good that everyone just marvels at it and forgets about 3d".....I think they succeeded.
This is dope! outsidexbox (and outsidextra) is one of my favourite channels on CZcams and as an Antstream Arcade Partner, this is so cool to see Antstream get a spotlight here! Awesome stuff, Mike and Andy! 🤩
Got serious GamesMaster vibes from this, maybe next time Jane could don a monacle and bark strange comments at you between rounds
The sounds of wild button hammering bring back fond memories
WAIT!! Outside Xtra just had a video with Nicolas Cage playing Super Bomberman 2 with Ellen and Luke, and now Mike's sat on a couch with Brian Fantana!!!??!! What a treat! What a time to be alive!
It works 100% of the time, 60% of the time
And that spells disaster for you at Sacrifice!
Andy going for the low blow with "I punched Willy"
I dig this content! Good way to show what looks like a good service, giving new life to old classics. Also, it was great fun to watch, more please!
I remember renting The Empire Strikes Back for the SNES and beating it over an intense weekend as a child. The game was brutal, but also very exploitable if you played aggressively!
I’ve been missing the challenges of the week that they used to do so this was a real treat
Love to see Mike getting all hyped up on retro games, nice to see someone share their geeky passions
The 90s console wars. I have seen things you people wouldn't believe. Sonics drowning of the coast of the Green Hills, I watched Metroid beams glitter from the gun of Samus Aran. All these moments will be lost like Yoshi in a pit before the final gate.
Underappreciated moment: how Andy first said machine gun willy
"My turn! My turn! My turn!" is the most timeless aspect of gaming.
Ohh great video, love the idea of doing retro game challenges, I'm sure streamers will have a field day with these haha
I want to see Andy rock the live action one piece Dracula Mohawk beard and stash.
Dracul Mihawk? it's a fashion choice that's for sure.
I remember how addictive these were. Never had the money to play much though. My brother bought me a Vic 20 (the precursor to the Commodore 64, from memory) so Mum and I would spend many happy hours playing the Space Invaders knock-off, Gorf.
Its called Ant Stream because a stream of ants carry the game from the developers house all the way to yours so you can play
The competitive mirth made this enjoyable. "It's very hostile." "You mean Hothstile."
Oh my gosh I remember going to the mall arcade and playing Pole Position! It was one of my favorites and the first game I would go to every time I went! All that's missing from this retro challenge is trying to convince the parents for just one more dollar in tokens lol
Honestly really enjoyed this. Would love to see you guys or Jane/Ellen/Luke do more of these
I was not expecting a Touch The Truck reference in TYOOL 2023.. Definitely appreciated here!
Mike: "Got one that's a little later on now. 1990. Relatively new. Just a mere 33 years old"
Me: "That can't be true, the 90's was only like 10 years ago. That would mean that I'm..."
*cue 'Saving Private Ryan' turning old meme*
Talk about bringing back some memories! Only one of these I hadn't heard of was the racing game but as for the others- what a time, what a time was had.
"Stab and shoot and stab and shoot and kill and shoot and stab"
I'm not sure why I enjoyed this so much
I wish I had all the quarters I chucked into those stand up machines. So much fun back in the day.
They stuck a Smash TV machine in the pub that I used to drink in after work in the early 1990's.
A few of us work lads went in one night to see it there for the first time. And I proceeded to amaze one and all by getting really far in the game on one credit. What with me being a gamer obsessed with my SNES and it's various bullet hell games. All whilst drinking copious amounts of lager and smoking a cigarette.
My reactions are shot now I'm nearing 60. I sit here yelling at FFXIV boss battles for what I consider unfair mechanics. lol
I love the amount of rage😂 These games didn't hold your hand or care about your sensibilities
Good times
Great Job on Metal Slug, Mike.
26:35 - "That's easy... Pierre Gasly manages that part regularly."
I’m glad you guys did this. I was born in the 70s and played games with no save states and actually all but one of the games on here. The challenges are really just getting through the games (except the no damage on Willy in Double Dragon)… Just taking them out of context / excerpts. Just things we did / still do (I don’t use emulation to this day). Modern games are a lot easier. I have finished Dark souls 1-3 but haven’t finished some NES games yet 🤭
This is the greatest sponsored video I've ever seen for Keeps: "Play these retro game challenges, and you'll grow (and regrow, again and again!) a mighty mustache capable of rivaling the glory of 1980's Tom Selleck within a matter of minutes... or your money back!"
Wait. The video's sponsor **was** Keeps, wasn't it? 😁Love you guys!
Very fun video to watch and I think I'm good being a casual : P
Retro game challenges, I knew Star Wars ESB was going to show up! Would love a stream of more retro games, Ghosts n Goblins anyone?
The first computer game I ever finished was Continental Circus on the Commodore 64. Lovely to see it again here, although the C64 version did not look as detailed as this one! Coin flip, pun intended, as to whether the first coin op I ever completed was Double Dragon or Operation Thunderbolt. I can't remember which of the two I finished first now. Thunderbolt was on a car ferry to Ireland and Dragon was in an indoor market that doesn't even exist any more. Ah, the memories! And here I am decades later, still gaming, currently on Tiny Tina's Wonderlands!!
Did anyone else used to download these guys short videos back on the 360? , sure they were like tip videos or something , specifically remember MrPointyHead or something along them lines , love these guys haha :)
Goldeneye level Control on 00 Agent. Thanks to the Switch version this year I've been reliving my childhood nightmares. I could live for 1000 lifetimes and never be able to complete it.
36:29 the sign on the left says (مطعم تسمم غذائي) which literally translate to food poisoning restaurant
Andy opening this up with Mike having never beaten any souls game will never not make me laugh.
I still remember when ds3 came out and Mike barely got Andy to try it.
I just subbed to Antstream 3 days ago, it's great. The realisation of my dwindling reflexes playing games I was once average at, not so much.
You're just out of practice, I'm sure!
True, but these once beautiful supple hands are now but claws!@@bast713
Not only do I remember Goro, I worked in one of those arcades, also remember when MK2 was released and lining up to play it because it wasnt everywhere, you had to travel to find a machine.
Some fun nostalgia. I remember playing Metal Slug 2 in the arcade with my brother. We beat it after playing for so long that I sprained my wrist.😅
What is the internal temperature of a Tauntaun?
Lukewarm! 🤣
Few years ago my brother and I played the first Mortal Kombat for a while. We spent over 3 hours trying to beat Goro one time and only ever won 1 round.
Andy, that's one HELL of a tash!!
So much nostalgia xD
Space Invaders, I like how you can fire your tank into rows on rows of invaders and the game is like “Nope, didn’t hit anything.” 🙄
The Carpenter Brut shirt is just perfect.
Machine gun Willy can be beaten pretty easily baiting him on elbows. Elbows are the most OP attack in the original DD.
I was thinking you needed more elbow for the Double Dragon level. There was some grade-A nonsense in some of the old arcade games though really...
I see they have Manic Miner! Ah, memories.
Editor cutting this footage together: "Nobody will notice the discontinuity here surely"
I know you're just doing this for money, but this is really enjoyable and good to watch.
Andy is giving strong Mike Wozniak vibes with that mustache
The absolute hardest challenge; Beat Lion King for the SNES in one week of kid gaming time!
Damn...that mustache/shadow combo on Andy has quite the chokehold on me 🥴
"Antstream" sounds like something you'd use to access the underground
Andy looks like he isn't allowed within 300 yards of a school...
Love the Carpenter Brut shirt! This man is cultured
I could recommend you Pokemon Radical Red for the Pokemon lovers among you. It has a lot of QoL improvements over regular games, great artwork and reworked music tracks and it comes with some real challenge. The game even has a randomizer mode and hardcore mode for the people that want additional challenges. With the aids however, you won't spend much time grinding items and exp as the game wants you to get to the good part of pokemon games as fast as possible.
I see Andy’s hair tonic is coming in nicely…
I remember goro had a glitch where if you started hitting punch and didn’t stop right from the beginning he would walk forward get hit once and then block for the rest of the round.
Fine. Your sponsored content worked. Off to play mortal kombat. I hope you are pleased with yourselves.
The first three Metal Slug games (and a bunch of other NeoGeo classics) are on GOG. Decent ports. Super fun. I like some of the later ones the most when they get super goofy and wild. Shock Troopers 1 & 2 are my favs tho. GoG is awesome for old games, PC and arcade ports, etc.
@outsidexbox yall should add some of these and maybe others to the christmas challenges
I am definitely a coddled 2023 casual and proud of it! because i keep my quarters and now just spend 100s of £s
Oh *gawsh*, that Star Wars game DX As a nineties child raised on the Super Nintendo, I have so many stressed-out memories of trying to play that bloody game. The number of times me and my tauntaun died in that same pit as Mike-! I remember actually making it to the big monster and past him *once*, and that must have been enough to vindicate me, because I honestly don't know if I remember ever playing that game again. Be interesting to pull it out of the drawer and see what I could accomplish as an adult, seeing as we still have the console and the game... Curse you, Oxbox, now I have to try it!
As someone with a complete MAME collection amongst others, I'm all onboard with any retrogaming content. Wow games were HARD. People talk about Dark Souls but our average games were that hard, but also three lives and then go away and try again from the beginning.
(extra points for the Ikari Warriors icon Mike)
"Poker cards!? I thought he said 'Pokécards!'" Can someone write a setup for this punchline, please?
I am too busy playing Lies of P to play some actually difficult games, but antstreamarcade looks like a lot of fun
I played a pc version of Space Invaders back in elementary school on the 90s and it did not have shields. I got very good at passing multiple stages on one life but they ran at you as well as shooting at you
Big money! Big prizes! I love it!
“Have a taste Machine Gun Willy” 😮
43:33 He has the low ground!!
These games are stressful, Mike's hair is all neat and trim when they start playing, but AFTER and they return to the couch it's messy and uncombed as if he was pulling it out due to the difficulty stress.
The modern day warrior!!!
Goro might have had an input read adaption had they actually taken their own advice, but I can't help but notice that one defensive kick in and one jump out was working....and then they just immediately stopped doing that, jumping multiple times out or going back to the sweeps or other moves
AIs in those games NEEDED input reading to have the ability to react to players at all. they were dumb as bricks.
I actually was expecting to see you playing circus Charlie, that's a messed up game
Fun! except for the gory man tank
it takes a few tries, but my usual strategy for goro is jump forward kick jump back, jump forward kick jump back, dodge when necessary. Did you HAVE to be Lu Kang? Silver surfer is a brutal challenge... I feel contra games could join as challenges - Cat Bond
Double Dragon - Elbow strike (Backwards with punch + jump) all the way; you can cheese the entire game with it, because it has a massive range...
This video was super entertaining. Also, I learned that Andy is so bad at these retro games 😂
1 hour crew woop woop
Freejack is an amazing film, so much fun.
some interesting challenges here, not convinced Goro was ever beatable, like how Andy broke the last one over Mike
odd how Andy and Mike kept changing there outfits between each time they played the games and introduced each challenge
