    Thank you for posting this video that explains everything in such a clear and simple manner that even a beginner like me can understand. I like the way you explain the basic strokes and how important it is to get those down. And the way you go over the nomenclature of the writing instrument. As a beginner, I couldn't figure out how the artists in some of the other videos were making some of the lines thin and some of the lines thick. I watched many videos before I stumbled upon your video (which is the best one I found so far). I think I might try my hand at learning calligraphy and collect some of the things needed to get started. Again, thank you so much for posting this.

    I've dabbled with cartridge pens with broad nibs in the past, but really have always wanted to start using my dip pen (had one for years...been awfully intimidated by it) and copperplate seems the way to go. I think I'll be going with the English Roundhand variant. I really liked this introductory video. It highlighted very clearly why the fundamentals are so necessary. I'll be checking out the rest. Thanks!

    A lot of good fundamentals. However, I've never seen anyone write with an oblique holder without turning their paper so the nib lines up with the slope. Keeping the paper flat causes the nib to be pulled down the paper at an awkward angle. I just put that out there in case any new calligraphers see the video and want to learn a more traditional way. I believe Joe Vitolo has a video on how to line up your pen, nib, and paper. Best wishes to all who pursue this beautiful lettering style.

    • @LoveleighLoops
      @LoveleighLoops  Před 5 lety

      Yes- excellent point! Something I forgot to mention in the video is that the paper is rotated, but so is the camera, so the paper appears straight even though it's angled. Also, the nib should line up with the slant line as you mentioned. If the camera was overhead it would show the same slant, but because of how the pen is oriented in relation to the camera, it appears off slant. Thanks so much for your comment!

  • @user-xf9hb8zo5c

    Hey!
    I got a problem. My writing style has some characters some lines of which going upward have to be broader than just a thin line. Does it mean I wont be able to use a fountain pen? Are there any nibs that let you make broad lines even when you make upgoing lines?

    Thank you for the fundamentals of the calligraphy you've shared with us, who were ashamed, due to terrible handwriting, which followed us (at least me) whole my life....
    03:05 - 55 degrees - very interesting feature... I have a picture in my mind, of the monk in 15th century, who rewrites a text during the night, while having only a single candle on the right corner of the angled desk, where the shadow of his pen was the guidance that he follows, which, I believe, is the most critical part of the uniformity of the calligraphy in order to avoid the "dunk letters", although of the same size.
    Cheers!

    hello!
    I realise when i try to write an upward stroke, there is little to no ink coming out, is it the angle of the pen that needs to be change?
    I'm using zebra g titanium nib.

    • @LoveleighLoops
      @LoveleighLoops  Před 6 lety +1

      Hello! You can try changing the angle of the pen relative to the paper. I usually have about 45 degree angle between the nib and paper if you look at it from the side. You can also try "gliding" upward and make sure you're not applying pressure when you go up. Or, if your ink is too thick, that could be contributing to the issue. Hopefully one of those suggestions helps!

    • @LoveleighLoops
      @LoveleighLoops  Před 7 lety

      Hello! The x-height used for this tutorial was 7mm which is great for practicing because it is large enough so that you can see details of each stroke, but not too big. If you have a more flexible nib (like a hunt 101), you can use a larger x-height; if you use a very small x-height with a flexible nib, the thick lines will over power the shape of the letters. Whenever I am writing very small, I use a less flexible one like the Nikko G. Thanks for the feedback and for your question!

    I know you probably weren't meaning to do this, but this is definitely in a category of ASMR. If you don't already do it, you should start an ASMR calligraphy channel. I think it will do very well!!

    • @LoveleighLoops

      You can do either way, but we usually recommend starting larger so that you can see everything with lots of detail. Then once you get more comfortable, you can start using the smaller guidelines

    This is a great informative video on beginning calligraphy, but I have to say, the voice of the narrator/insructor is soooo soothing, sexy and mesmerizing, it's difficult for me to stay focused and concentrate on the content! If you're the one reading this comment I hope you take this as a sincere compliment of the highest order. I will save this video as both informative, as I'm interested in calligraphy, as well as adding this to my ASMR content as your voice is the amazing! Thank you!

    At 4:17 you change the paper you are writing on. Previous to the change the six lines are from top to bottom 2A, 1A, H, B, 1D, 2D. After the change the six lines are 1A, 2A,H,B, 1D, 2D. This change is not explained. Traditionally the fine strokes are called “fillers” and the thick strokes are “risers”. Not shure when this changed to “hairlines”.

    Can you guide me as to the best pen nib for Copperplate? I am a brand new beginner.

    • @moniquesalazar1708
      @moniquesalazar1708 Před rokem

      Right now I'm learning modern through The Happy Ever Crafter course, taught by Becca, and during the supplies breakdown, it was all about preference.
      Pointed pen was mentioned as being really difficult, but once mastered, brush pen would be a breeze.
      Nib should be flexible and pointed, but some can be less flexible, easier for beginner. Nikko G and Zebra G nibs were said to be popular for beginners. Speedball holders were mentioned as inexpensive and good for beginner. There are oblique and straight holders (speedballs come in both varieties). In video we see oblique, which holds the nib at an angle.
      I imagine brush pen would be fine, because it involves the same light/hard pressure as pointed pen. Becca mentioned her favorite recommendation was Tombow Fudenosuke. Also, soft tip would be harder and hard tip easier. There are different sizes so for Becca's course we print the according workbook.
      Whichever writing tool you use impacts the quality/type of paper you need.
      Perspective from beginner in modern calligraphy, so take what I've said as you will.
