  • GA ADOPTS RESOLUTION ON INTERNATIONAL DAY OF REFLECTION AND COMMEMORATION OF THE 1995 GENOCIDE IN SREBRENICA
    This morning, the General Assembly adopted a resolution on the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica.
    The draft resolution A/78/L/67/Rev.1 obtained 84 votes in favour, 19 against and 68 abstentions.
    The document was considered on the agenda item 14, the Culture of peace.
    The resolution designates 11 July as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica, to be observed annually.
    The meeting was chaired by the President of the General Assembly, Mr. Dennis Francis.

    GA TO PAY TRIBUTE TO THE LATE PRESIDENT OF IRAN
    The PGA informed Member States that he will convene a plenary meeting of the General Assembly to pay tribute to the memory of the late President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, H.E., Mr. Ebrahim Raisi, who died on Sunday, 19 May.
    The meeting will take place next Thursday, 30 May at 10 a.m. in the General Assembly Hall.
    In his letter date on 21 May, President Francis informed that “Member States are encouraged to deliver regional group statements” at the meeting.
    This afternoon, the PGA will sign the Book of Condolences in Memory of the late President.
    PGA TO ISSUE MESSAGE OF SOLIDARITY FOLLOWING SEVERE FLOODING
    PGA Dennis Francis has recorded a video message to express solidarity to the victims of severe weather and flooding in several regions of the world.
    He mentioned recent extreme climate events in Afghanistan, Brazil, northern Europe and many countries in East Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, and Somalia among others.
    President Francis appeals to countries everywhere to “come together in a joint effort to improve planning for disaster risk reduction, investing in early warning systems and building resilience capable of minimizing such damage and losses.”
    He recalled that: “Over the past 50 years, the number of recorded disasters has quintupled - with climate change amplifying both the frequency and magnitude of disasters.”
