    apologies for the slight audio stutter in the intro/outro, it's a result of two different editors working on the video with different render settings, and very long story short, it can't be fixed without undoing other work. I decided it was acceptable because what I'm saying is still perfectly legible, but if it's too distracting for you, there are no glitches between 10:00 and 34:06
    Edit: It's also come to my attention that "Eichiro Oda's" picture and the footage of "Akira Toriyama" are misattributed. Sorry. I should have caught that when reviewing the edits.

    The fact that Sukuna is a *true* villain is very refreshing to me. He' just evil, he has no tragic story thus far that makes us sympasize with him, he's a pure form of ill will and the manga is not afraid to show it.

  • @bleachmaniac18
    @bleachmaniac18 Před 2 lety +2456

    One thing I found refreshing while watching this show was how Nanami dealt with Yuji. Nanami never looked down on Yuji or belittled him just because he was younger. He was always simply worried about him because he was younger and did not want him to get hurt or experience something that would damage him emotionally. He wasn't one of those typical anime adults that expect teeangers, who are still children, to do all sorts of insane shit for their age. Now, yes, he expects him to fight curses and survive, but he also never forgets that Yuji is a child and tries to keep him safe at all costs. He's one of the best example of an adult that I have seen in anime.

      Yeah that was nanamis whole thing.
      He was "the adult of adults." He has some of my favorite lines ever, "being a child is not a sin." "I am not underastimating you, I am an adult and you are a child. I have a duty to protect your life over my own."
      My man was the absolute embodiment of being a responsible adult.

      @artificialraspberify Před rokem +20

      I love that it makes sense with his character too. Small spoiler, but he lost his friend, someone so remicisent of Yuji and that loss still effects him. Haibara was expected to give up his life and Nanami was expect to deal with that and in time give up his own life for others. Nanami was 15/16 years old when that happened, the same age as our first years, and it so fucked up. So of course he's protective of Yuji in his own way. Yuji isn't an adult and shouldn't have these burdens on him just as Nanami shouldn't have had them on himself. And the fact I got all this from only a few panels during the Past Gojo arc and the Shibuya arc is insane.

On one hand, Yuuji now knows there's something up. On the other hand, will that make any difference? Sukuna can do whatever he wants and I don't want there to be a situation (but in all likelihood it probably will happen this way) where he threatens to kill a lot of people, forcing Megumi to do what he wants. He'd probably kill all those people anyway..

    It has been started in the manga that when curses die, as long as the negative emotions towards something still exists, the curse will be reborn, but they lose all memories and powers of their former incarnation. It can be assumed from the nature of the current Mahito that all incarnations of Mahito were big trouble makers, leading me to believe that unlike Jogo, Hanami, and Dagon, who all have stayed undercover for hundreds of years, Mahito's previous incarnations would recklessly die in battle due to them pursuing their basic desires, meaning that they are reincarnated pretty often and therefore most don't get enough time to develop.

      That's a very interesting thought; I mean, the nature of human connection HAS changed over time. In the times of early man, humans were incredibly co-reliant. We needed one another just to make it through the day, and there were so few humans around that there really wasn't as great a concept of "fear of your own kind" among us. You had your family, and that was about it... As we grew and expanded our numbers and minds, however, we started to encounter one another. That created a new concept: "otherness". Those people aren't MY group, so they're a problem. Competition, not welcome... negative things.
      That would have been the first Mahito, an incredibly base creature who just ran around trying to kill everyone who wasn't him. Naturally, so much aggressive and uncontrolled behavior would eventually be stopped by the first humans to tap into cursed energy and eliminate them. But that wouldn't stop humans from hating one another. Subsequently, Mahito would be reborn time and time again with each new massive change in human thought and behavior, becoming a more advanced, cruel, and powerful self each time. More humans means more curse and fear energy, after all. And the more we're able to KNOW about one another, the more fear we have. For example, a Crusades era Mahito would be quite the monster... but one so single-minded, it would be horrific. And with this being the Information Age, we're bombarded by soul-crushingly horrible news about the entire human race daily that it makes sense that this Mahito would not only be cunning, self-aware, and sneaky..... but that they'd have such a devastating power to torture humans through their very soul itself.

      @@chocolatethunder-iy9wv it did everything MB explained in the intro. Didn’t really add anything super innovative, but refined the hallmarks of its genre into one of the best shonen of its day. This includes, but is not limited to:
      - Good pacing, fights don’t overstay their welcome
      - A protagonist who isn’t constantly passive (looking at you, Ichigo Kurosaki)
      - Protagonist is not anyone important purely because of who they are or where they come from (looking at you, Naruto, Ichigo, Natsu, Goku), but rather attracts the attention of a powerful mentor by virtue of his actions
      - The villain starts out as subpar, but he grows alongside the protagonist
      - Negative sides to the established society are constantly being explored and questioned
      - Has no weak main villains (Shigaraki I’ve already covered, All for One is suitably terrifying, Stain is a dark parallel to Deku’s vision of a true hero and embodies the saying “the path to hell is paved with good intentions,” Overhaul is very capable and sickeningly efficient with his psychological abuse of Eri, Gentle and La Brava are extremely charming and empathetic, a reflection of what Deku could’ve been if he had never met All Might)
      - Has an amazing Tournament Arc
      - Has managed a sharp but believable turnaround for Endeavor, one of the most hated characters of the series when he was introduced
      - Decent exploration of side characters given the large cast and the amount of time available
      - Angry rival did NOT join the bad guys, even in pretend (looking at you, Sasuke, Ishida)
      - The setting aptly explores the role of media and public opinion in a modern society
      - A simple message, embodied best during the concert at the culture festival: “anyone can become a hero.” You don’t need to be a rubberman, alien monkey demigod, fox-demon host, or have any special powers at all to be a hero to someone.
      Perhaps its hype is too much, but I also believe that most people who say things like “MHA sucks” or “lmao MHA isn’t great at all” aren’t giving the story a fair chance, and are all too often blind to what makes it great.

Everything else is nice as far as I'm concerned, but that's by far the biggest difference I can find between it and other shounen manga/anime. Female characters almost never have this level of depth and characterization. Kugisaki specifically could easily come off wrong, but somehow is written in a way that doesn't make her seem rude, but rather a nice person with some issue's she has to work through, just like the rest of the characters. When you brought up Sukuna being possibly the end game boss, it reminded me how in our Fandom, social media landscape, when writers present clues and foreshadowing of plot lines, and the fans figure it out, some writers deviate from that to try and force shock and surprise, even if its what they had planned. I think it's important to stick to a narrative throughline like that as a writer because even if your audience expects it, a lot of the time they're excited because the idea alone fills them with joyous dread for the outcome.

    • @jasonreed7522
      @jasonreed7522 Před 2 lety +19

      The point of foreshadowing is so that the reader can predict the outcome. The only difference is that instead of everyone individually being like "called it" while reading/watching alone when they figured it out 5 pages ago or even just a paragraph ahead they get e feeling of where this is going. Now the entire internet basically cloud computes the answer where 1 person provides a solid suggestion, a few thousand others echo it and another person makes another solid suggestion, rinse and repeat until only a few most plausible fan theories are circulating the internet by the time the next episode comes out.
      The point of foreshadowing hasn't changed, its just how we interpret it is so much more effective than the old 1v1 we used to do with the author and now authors don't like the entire internet solving their puzzles in a weekend so the sacrifice the original storyline for shock value.

    • @TrineDaely
      @TrineDaely Před 2 lety +4

      As a writer I drop foreshadowing without even realizing it myself until I re-read for edits after being away from it. As a reader of regular books I have a hard time picking up on it until re-reads, but manga and anime I'm better at catching it, so the visual aspects help get that through while still enjoying picking up additional missed pieces on re-reads.

    Points for JJK.
    1. An mc who genuinely feels more human due to how everything effects him
    2. Great foil to the mc in Mahito since he's a massive threat and probably the most terrifying villain in the series.
    3. The demon inside trope is used well since Sukuna is evil through and through which is refreshing since most shonen mcs make peace and befriend the demon (Black Clover and Naruto for example) which I find unsatisfying since they're built up to be inhuman monsters but basically become a pet or plot device.
    4. Every female character is memorable and pretty good characters when in some shonen they're either fan service or cardboard cutouts, Sakura being the prime example of being a poorly written character since she exists to be Sasuke's love interest and she gets no development.
    5. Gojo

    I just finished the anime (I know I'm a little late) and I have to say that one of my favorite features of this anime is that it actually gives life to the idea that words have meaning.
    Not just in a psychological, mindest sense, but in a combat and lifestyle sense. Other anime, especially shonen ones, tend to focus on long, long battles that have both lots of action and lots of dialogue that eventually end with the victor walking away with either their ideals intact or a new understanding that adds itself to those ideals or completely restructures them (I'm looking at you Naruto)
    In Jujutsu Kaisen, Jujutsu Sorcerers have to actively think about what benefits or disadvantages speaking gives them in their life. Whatever they say is the literal threshold between life and death for themselves and others through the explanation of their powers and throught their own internal dialogue that changes their self-perception and self-understanding.
    It's a fantasy shonen grounded in reality, if that makes sense.

    My favorite sorcerer is Nanamin: I love that he tried to walk away from jujutsu because he just wanted to earn money and live a normal life, and I love that he came back to it because he’s too good a person to let people suffer.

      Well... it wasn't just that. He was disgusted with the JJK world of crazy, cruel assholes running the show (like the Zenins and the principal), only to go out into the real world and find.... nothing changed. The work was soulless and his bosses were still trash. So he might as well go back to being a sorcerer because at least then he'd be helping people.

I don't think there's anything selfish about that at all of what you said. I hope you found comfort and peace over this year. Jujutsu Kaisen takes a LOT of inspiration from Hunter X Hunter's Nen power system, particularly in how its contracts and restrictions work. Which is a good thing because Nen is IMO the only one that surpasses the curse technique system in JJK

      Cursed energy definitely reads as a simpler, less structured form of nen, but I think that might be a strength in this instance. Nen is complex, rigid, versatile, and as close to perfect as a power system can get, but it's also huge. We needed two episodes to explain the fundamentals, and more elements continue to be added throughout two entire arcs. This works for a grand (never to be finished) story like Hunter x Hunter, with well over a hundred episodes and hundreds upon hundreds of chapters, but it'd be way too much for the leaner, shorter and faster paced story of JJK. Ultimately cursed energy serves JJK's story perfectly, it's dynamic, easy to follow, and is flexible and versatile enough for more than enough tactical applications for the entire story, which is all you need a power system to do.

    I just love the growth rate of power in Jujutsu Kaisen characters. It feels true to life in a weird way as you can be so stuck at one level forever, but your ability can also boost instantly when the right perception "clicked" in your mind.
    It made me believe that even our beloved Gojo infinity level skill could be surpassed by his students at some point. His speech to Megumi was very inspiring, to push oneself into the version you could imagine off, that just make you believe in your own potential.
