It's amazing how much this mirrors my experience as a game developer. Leaving High School I was suicidal & depressed & working at a shitty gas station, I had been doing game dev in my free time for years at that point and my only wish in life was to do it as a job. Eventually I got my first contract, then my second, and soon it was my full-time job. At once point I even had 3 contracts going simultaneously working every day non-stop. There was no such thing as boundaries, if I was gaming and then decided to work that was that.
Eventually it got to the point (and something I now still struggle with) that I couldn't enjoy doing anything because all I could think of is how that time could be spent doing work instead. And work started to feel bland too as what had once been my dream became my every day chore.
It's amazing you posted this today, as it was just today that I decided for the first time to put a stop time on when I work. I don't know if this will help to fix things but I hope so.
Objectively, I have the job I always wanted, my personal releases have been played by hundreds of thousands, and I've worked on games for other companies that have been played by millions. I always thought the reason I'm having so much trouble enjoying these things is because I had chronic depression for 10 years and it still lingers with me, and I likely am high on neuroticism. And maybe those things are definitely playing an important role, but seeing this video makes me think I'm not alone & maybe I could go a long way toward getting better if I made an effort to draw distinguished boundaries between work & everything else as I've just today began attempting to do, as well as making those hours which I am working more meaningful so that I can get more done with less (although I think I've been pretty good at that).

So we are talking about the dreadful dopamine addiction. As a IT uni student this is a problem I found myself in as well.
    Some tips tho:
    - work first, dopamine later - dopamine is hormone of satisfaction, if you are satisfied you don't want to work (you start gaming before and after ;))
    - if nothing sparks joy in you anymore try dopamine detox at least for a day - no *high* dopamine activities (gaming, TV) only low dopamine as a reward (reading, exercising)
    - and do exercise, works wonders (calisthenics, pilates, football)

I've been experiencing lack of any motivation for the last two months. I stopped studying properly (I'm in high school), video games kan keep me engaged for some time but then I just feel empty and bored. I have plenty of games but I want to play but not motivated to (I dunno how to word it properly). The same with youtube and social media, I didn't even watch this video till the end though it seems interesting to me. I used to lern programming for a more than a year but recently I just dropped it even though the end of the course wasn't far away. For this period of time I felt and still feel like I'm existing, not living a life.
So I thought about your tips but I just don't reaaly understand the point.
      > work first, dopamine later
Well, summer holidays are almost here and I don't have any work, and even when I have it I just barely do it
      > try dopamine detox at least for a day
And what next? I'll just return to my original pace, I don't think that suddenly everything I do will become more amusing after I go through a more boring than usual day.
      > do exercise
I tried sports, I'm just not interested in it and never was. I never understood people that are keen on sports.
So I just sit in my room not knowing what to do. My cat brings me happiness tho, but he doesn't like contacting with people a lot

This is also why I think creation of things or ideas that last a long time or forever is also an escape from the Hedonic Treadmill. You can always look back at your creations, appreciate the effort and the result and see that other people appreciate it too. This gives meaning and being grateful for what you have done is mental work you have to responsibly approach and do. In case, you think your work is not or would not be meaningful, you have to correct your aim within yourself to something that is, which means being open to the world and in one with yourself. All of this can be a source of never ending improvement and meaning.

But after a while playing those games didn't give me any joy. I wondered why I was playing why I didn't do anything better with my time. I had a realy long train of thought about this. Too long to be put in one CZcams comment. But in the end I concluded that we humans need something that occupies our minds, let's them gather knowledge or at least work on things that realy uses them properly. The only way I could stop my unrest was by giving myself tasks an forcing myself to do them. Of course treating yourself with some fun and free time is important but keeping your mind working in the right way is even more important.

Trying to get myself to stop procrastinating has been difficult, and your tips, even if they don't work, motivate me to try something new. Thank you Philip.

I think the reason I love your videos so much is because it feels a lot of the time that I'm listening to a British version of myself explaining my own habits to me. I struggle with the same issues (if you replace CZcams with college classes). I even had a scenario where I would wake up extremely early, play games, then be able to face school, and found myself with the same consequences.

Yep! I got a fulltime 9-5 job like 2 months ago after 3 full years of (almost) freedom and i can not agree more. Breaking my unheathy habits and ridiculously bad lifestyle was literally the hardest thing i think i've done in life so far! The first year after quitting school was literally the best year of my life. Anything after that i can only remember as a weird feverdream of nonstop gaming, watching content and procrastination. I got so extremely bored of it i actually had the same thoughts throughout the last year as you did. "maybe i need to work so i can have fun again". And after a year of consideration and building up a feeling of guilt, i finally managed to take that step. I'm happy its Friday right now! 3 months ago i wouldn't even know what day it is! If i hadn't gone and changed my life the way i did a while back, im sure this video would have done it!

Like the late Mark Fisher said: "Perhaps the feeling most characteristic of our current moment is a mixture of boredom and compulsion. Even though we recognise that they are boring, we nevertheless feel compelled to do yet another Facebook quiz, to read yet another Buzzfeed list, to click on some celebrity gossip about someone we don’t even remotely care about. We endlessly move among the boring, but our nervous systems are so overstimulated that we never have the luxury of feeling bored. No one is bored, everything is boring."

This is super valuable advice, I'm a league of legends commentator by trade and have started streaming and all that stuff and end up feeling depressed if I'm not productive. I've heard it referred to as "toxic productivity", where your existance revolves around productivity and so the idea of that erodes at your hobbies and you can't do anything "fun" unless it's content because you should be productive, but you don't want to work because you're tired, so you procrastinate.
Each day ends up les productive and more procrastinated and you don't even play games anymore, just feel frustrated that you didn't do anything. I think setting a daily schedule with deadlines is definitely a good step forward. Thanks for the advice mate.

This video came at a very good time for me. I've always been a good student in school and it was mostly my worth ethic that helped me keep that in place. I always made sure it was work first, play second. Recently with COVID and other hard things, I've found myself slacking off significantly in my work. I would regularly open up my phone to look at memes as a form of procrastination and as you mentioned, it has turned into burnout. My brain seeks short-term enjoyment whenever I have to do work for a long time, which makes it a lot harder to be productive and as a result, I spend many hours on a problem that could be done in 30 minutes. Thankfully, my school year is almost over and I will have an internship (that I will most likely not enjoy) that will help whip me back into a more structured schedule. This video came at a good time for me. Now, I feel motivated and have set a goal for myself for studying for finals following this video. Thank you.

  • @emilianoruizcarletti9381

I agree with you Philip, after quarantine and home office became the norm I slowly started to deteriorate. Why wake up at 8 am when I can start later but end later? Why do things now when I can take a shower now and compensate later for those 30 minutes I've been off. That's how I managed to get up at 12pm and work until 3am.
I wasn't having fun because I knew I had to work but I never worked because I could always compensate later.
One day, after waking up at 12 pm I literally lied in bed for around 6 hours doing nothing but scrolling through Instagram and that's when I realized something had to change.
Since then I changed my job and developed better habits, my primary focus now is to spot the moments I'm procrastinating and take a choice: have fun or get work done. Don't mix things up.
Thanks for sharing your POV, it encouraged me to review some of my most recent choices in life and something to compare to

Applying this to my schoolwork, it makes sense. My homework becomes tedious without a youtube video to watch in the background, and the line between work and play in the evenings becomes ever more blurred. My attention in class becomes more devoted to talking to my friends rather than anything else. It's a sad reality of the human condition, although we can fight against it.

I had real severe issues with burnout several years ago working in the music biz to the point where I stopped working in it for a few years and just now starting to slowly get back into it . I think for me part of my major issues I ran into was I was working so much I was neglecting everything else in life. It was basically work all the time 24/7 from the time I woke up to the time I went to bed. It got to the point where I didn't feel happy unless I was working which eventually got to me a a lot more than I was willing to admit at the time. What made me realize I needed to slow down and maybe change gears for a while was when I was seriously considering moving across country for a job leaving behind every one I knew and leaving behind many of the very people that made me enjoy the work so much. In some ways I do wish I hadn't have stepped away but looking back I've realized it was a good thing as it allowed me to get some much needed perspective in life. This time I realize I need to balance my life more than I was as waking constantly all the time is no way to live no matter how much you enjoy it.

I own a fairly successful business, I always wanted to get to a point in which it ran autonomously without intervention, recently it’s hit that point and I have found I harboured much resentment for it. The hours of grinding and working myself to the bone to help build something bigger than myself.
After reaching my I goal, I realised I hit a plateau, I’ve spoken to others who have also achieved a similar status and it’s a very well known parable/cliche that the journey is far more fulfilling and exciting than ever achieving your eventual dream.
I was given similar advise to this although not as eloquent, which was to focus on the small things in life and start new projects or hobbies solely for you but everything in moderation. That statement really hit home watching your video knowing others have felt the same way. Thank you, Phil!

This is exactly what I noticed. Especially with COVID I've found the boundaries between my free time and studies completely eroded and I felt busy all the time despite doing less work than I had done in the past. I think I read somewhere that going to different physical places, like heading to work everyday or school, helps our brain build routines that allow us to better focus on what we believe those places are for. I think the best advice is what you say at the end because never having an end time makes work all the more torturous and makes people want to put it off even more.

@@kliksphilip It's definitely a shot in the dark, but: First, the fact that they both rose to popularity pretty quickly. And also that they are now struggling to stick to a work schedule.
No shade to them at all, but If I had to guess, the fact that they were getting hundreds of thousands of dollars from gambling sites brought them more money than they've ever seen. Mixed with the fact that they became some of the largest CSGO CZcamsrs in the matter of years probably made it hard to set higher goals since they already achieved that success so quickly.
