- In today's video we are going to do a motorcycle oil change walkthrough on my Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 twin! Changing motorcycle oil is not a hard process, and it differs a little from bike to bike, but this will give you a basic idea of how to change oil in a motorcycle. Specifically how to change oil in a Royal Enfield Continental gt 650.

I would have made 3 changes to this oil change procedure:
1) To follow RE's oil specifications, use a motorcycle *10W50 full synthetic* oil with an API rating of *"SN"* . In the U.S., Motul and Bel-Ray are easiest to find for this.
The "50" is important for warm weather running, and the "10W" is important not only for lubrication at start-up, but also because RE's 650cc bikes have *oil coolers* -
which run cooled oil thru the oil filter instead of hot oil like other engines (and the cooler itself also provides a lot of viscous drag along its interior walls).
2) To remove the last of the dirty oil from the corner of the oil sump that is low (since the Continental GT doesn't have a center stand),
I'd hold the bike upright for a minute to let that last bit of oil drain out.
3) To allow the oil filter to tighten smoothly and evenly onto its mating surface,
I'd smear a drop of oil over the rubber gasket of the filter before screwing the filter on.
Agreed aside from I used semi synth Bel-Ray haha, I keep cases of it around and have found it to be my preferred happy medium. I actually did hold the bike up as you said just couldn't do that and hold the camera from that side of the bike. Thanks for the additions!
Mechanic here. Agree, though getting the last drop of oil out isn't necessary.
@@redtobertshateshandles - As a professional where time-is-money, you're doing it cost-effectively and that's good for the client. OTOH, I'm a DIYer, and I find that the dirtiest oil seems to be at the bottom of the sump where I can wipe it up with my little finger and see how dirty it is. Admittedly, that dirt won't get past the filter, but I want my engine to know I care. :-)

I've cut the RE oil filter apart , it looks just like a Mobile 1 M104. I know people are addiment about the recommended 10-50 oil. I've been using Rotella diesel oil which has the Jaso m2 ratings. With no problem so I'm sticking it.

The 650 is a euro 5 hot bike. They specify fully synthetic for a reason.

I would just add one thing.
Always double check the oil filter by comparing it to the old filter.
Love the filling the oil filter with oil some oil. So instant oil to engine!
Alex, was it me or was the old oil filter a bit dented and dinged up? If that was the case, your thoughts on getting the sump guard?
Mine was but that was AFTER I mangled it with the filter clamp hahaha...it was fine before that
I had to use a C clamp on mine to get it off for the first oil change. Never had an oil filter on that tight. 🙄
Yeah it was on there tight for my first one, this was actually the second oil change hahaha and it was still tight again

I've heard Mobil1 M1-104A fits but haven't tried it myself yet.
What does RE say to do about the dirty oil left in the oil cooler?
I'd be tempted to drain that out, too.
Ironically they don't mention it at all haha, once the oil settles it may be designed to drain MOST of it out of the cooler, and after the change my oil is now very very clean so...guessing most of it drains out when you let the oil settle into the pan.
@@AlexSimmons11c - I email'd RE-NorthAmerica, and today they replied that it wasn't necessary to drain out the old oil that remains in the cooler.
That wouldn't stop *ME* , though! :-)
I read that doing your own service voids the RE warranty. Is that correct?
I have not seen any issues with that as long as you use the recommended parts and fluids, and keep your receipts. Now if something goes wrong that was directly caused by you not servicing it correctly then you may have issues, but in the time that i have owned one and the time I worked for an Enfield dealer I never saw a warranty be voided by self-servicing as long as the correct part were used.
Great video Alex , would 10w40 be ok to use in this bike in Aust ? Even though it says use 10w50 ? 10w40 is a common oil for motorcycles. I only use semi syn as well , as i have been told full syn can make wet clutch slip , i have also used 15w40 DIESEL OIL in many of my bikes with no problems what so ever , mainly GULF WESTERN TOP DOG XDO 15W40 , OR CALTEX DELO 400 MULTIGRADE . I would also like to see a chain and lube adjustment, and a valve check adjustment video as well , if not to much trouble mate .

No worries Brett, I plan to do a chain video next time mine needs one haha, who knows how long it will be until my valves are "out" enough to need adjusting, but if and when they do I'll bring everyone along for that.
As far as the oil I always recommend people go by owners manual recommendations as that is the responsible thing to do. That being said I'm running 10W-40 Bel-Ray in mine...I keep it around and I don't have issues with it. I wouldn't run a 15W just because I'd be concerned about having oil cooler issues with that viscosity difference, but I have had no issues with the 10W.
No, Aussie summers are hot, pay a little extra and buy the correct oil. No full synthetic won't make the clutch slip ,that's total crap. Full synthetic is heat resistant important on an air cooled engine. Diesel oil is great flushing oil but not motorcycle oil. Stop penny pinching.
Hey Alex Great video! I'm a proud owner of the 650 GT and I appreciate the content that you put out especially on your RE 650 GT. My bike is almost at the end of its running in period and I'm debating wheather or not to do the first service myself. This is my first bike and I'm loving it so far. I usually do my own basic maintenance on my cars etc. and I actually enjoy it. also I don't think the $300 + is justified to have the dealer do it. They've already rubbed me the wrong way with a few things. maybe you can make a vid on other maintenance procedures for the bike? it would be greatly appreciated and it's awesome to see your enthusiasm about your GT. Keep up the great work! also I put the S&S pipes on and they sound so good they just rip and pop all the right notes hahah safe riding bro!
Thanks for watching Christian! I was thinking of doing some more maintenance videos as they come up! Unfortunately usually it hasn't needed much aside from the oil changes and occasional chain cleaning...but I will do my maintenance on camera when possible hahaha. $300 to service this is ridiculous to be honest...I mean you saw how long the video was...it doesn't take long at all and the filter was like $6

@@AlexSimmons11c Thank you Alex for putting together this video and helping out all of us who have the new GT. I also have the first 300 miles service coming up - and agree - too much money. I'm going to do my own oil change. Like Christian - the only thing I'm worried about is the valve clearance tappet adjustment they say should be done after 300 miles.

One of the things I hated working in a bike shop was stingey customers. The first service might save your life you tossers.
Where do you find buy the washers, and filters for the royal enfield. I am having a hard time finding them in California. I have a 2016 GT continental 535cc.
What is the grade of your oil ?
I always use a JASO MA2 grade Bel Ray oil in my motorcycles, and RE 650 models recommend 10W-50 for a weight. To be completely honest I'm running 10W40 right now as I've had great success with that...but I recommend sticking with what they say haha.

I would add the .27 qts it calls for due to when the bike is running it pulling more oil and it will look like your bike is low. Also the K&N PS 1004 is the same thread pitch and size filter and only costs $8.99 on Amazon. If your looking to use a good filter and save a buck rather than buying royals enfield filters. Be safe on the road!
What grade of oil did u use
The Bel-Ray semi synth blend that I like to use is a JASO MA2 oil, so it meets the recommendations of the 650 twins' owners manual.

@@royalenfieldthug3651 - Those are viscosity grades, the no. to the left of the "W" is a measure of its viscosity at 0°C (32°F),
and the no. after the "W" is a measure of its viscosity at 100°C (212°F).
My bike's filler cap is god dam stucked🤐
