Well fighter aircraft would be good but ideally one would chose some form of multi-role aircraft. Fighter aircraft with the current budget and military size would be a real pain to optimise.

Now if the fighter/tactical aviation of the RNZAF and RAAF were integrated and using a common type, it'd be far less painful than NZ operating a small, independent force alone... jus' sayin'.

Theres no point no country other than america or australia can even get fighter jets to New Zealand. Chinas Aircraft carriers can only operate domestically and in the area around china and theres no strategic value in even taking new Zealand.

@@Booyaka9000yes well the Australian government gave us that option when they decided on the F-35A back in 2006, same airframe, less cost in maintenance, but we declined

Good news. Our Kiwi mates across the ditch will be able to operate with our Aussie P8s. Any plans to bring back an air combat capability?

Like Australia that only has a small defence force, NZ realistically relies on the US for its defence.

You act surprised, as if the NZ govt wouldn't cheap out on defence spending 🤣
They did after all send troops to die in Afghanistan in completely unsuitable Humvees, when suitable mine protected vehicles were available in surplus amounts right across the ditch!
