      I recently inherited a clarinet, from our band boosters, how can I clean the barrels,/pieces?, they're very dusty

      @@tracyshelton5599 not sure if you still need the info lol. But your barrel can probably be washed with water, but do be gentle. Avoid using corrosive substances cause I'm not sure how they'll react with the coating. The rest of the parts, you'll have to grab a cleaning cloth of some sort and just wipe. Again, be very gentle.

    'You might be in high school, you might be in college', or you might be in your 30s (and a high school teacher!) and never touched a reed instrument before and is self teaching! Thanks Laura for this video, really helpful. Clarinet CZcams is pretty limited - there's definitely room here for someone who's a great teacher like yourself to do more like this.

    This was actually very useful to me. No one told me about when to change reed sizes. I switched from clarinet to bass clarinet because I thought I sucked at my instrument. This week I bought some new reeds that were the same cut and size and all my other reeds and I was actually able to make a good sound and play full range of my instrument again! Wish I would have learned this sooner!

    I'm rewatching this after about one year of practice. Great advice on reeds. I recommend anyone that want to play a wind instrument, just get a clarinet. I managed to get a buffet b12 for 51GBP, the case was beaten up but the clarinet itself was practically unused. Tell me listening to Stranger on The Shore doesn't do anything for you. The clarinet has a massive range, glissando potential is massive too. Its light and easy to carry around, just keep one in your car for impromptu jam sessions with random guitarists etc. Intonation is excellent compared to my alto sax. For anyone with some kind of respiratory condition (I have had heart surgery myself), this is maybe the instrument that helps you the most, much more fun than blowing into one of those medical things for 20 mins a day. My life is better because of music and the clarinet.

    I was surprised by all this Reeds info. Such a complete easy to understand talk.
    Sort of brings-life the humble reed.

    It’s good to hear more about breaking in reeds since my band director never taught us how! I’m super unlucky because someone managed to break my reed before a concert twice and both times I had to play my duet on a brand new reed😬

    On my Backun vocalise mouthpiece I find that the D Addario reserve classics give a nice warm and rich sound while the reserve evolution give a bigger more powerful sound but with a little more resistance. But I think they are both really good in the strength 3 1/2.

    A blank is cane that has been cut to the right size but hasn't had the vamp fully cut into it yet. The part you are calling the vamp is actually the stock.

    Strength is NOT about thickness - it's about density of cane which is determined at the factory (at least for Vandoren) by testing the flexibility of the tip with a puff of air. Yes, you can make a reed softer by thinning the tip, but that is not how it works on the manufacturing end.

    How comfortably should a reed fit inside of a reed case? Should the reed be able to slide in and out of the case easily or should it be tighter? Because I just got a reed case and it's like a really tight fit to the point where I have trouble sliding the reed in and out

  • @melanierousseau7964

    When do u know you should move up strengths? Like how do u know you need/want to move up?

    • @TylerBischoff
      @TylerBischoff Před 4 lety +7

      Melanie Rousseau I think the best way is to try a stronger reed and really get a feel for how it reacts differently then your current strength. If it’s pretty airy I would wait but if its slightly harder to play but you’ve still got good tone quality I would suggest switching.

    • @clarinetmaster5990
      @clarinetmaster5990 Před 4 lety +3

      I agree with the guy above me. However, don’t be like me. I played on a 3 1/2 traditional for a full semester last year because I thought “I had to move up”. I still have some recordings of myself and I sounded terrible(bold/italics). Sometimes if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. :)

  • @broncer7000
    @broncer7000 Před 2 lety +2

    The most important thing for beginners when it comes to reeds is the right strength for the right tip opening. Students should start on a mouthpiece reed setup that a professional would play on then have them learn to get the best sound on that set up

    Giant cane (what reeds are made of) is an invasive plant where I am. I should get some and let it dry for a year and then try making my own reeds. Bet they'll suck!

    The "tubes" in the reed are "pores".

    • @jackx4311
      @jackx4311 Před 2 lety

      No, they are not. Pores are holes in a surface, such as the pores in our skin. The TUBES in bamboo are the same as the tubes in any wood, and they HAVE to be tubular in order to carry sap from the roots up to the top.
