@@chada75 Yep lucky you aren't dead mate! I didn't think anyone could survive a Magneto blast. I copped the same lawn mower shock by touching the grid while it was running (with my thumb on the plug by mistake for leverage as I went to shut off the rusty fuel tap). Even that is 30,000 volts. I was bent over and it made me stand up. Awful feeling.
We used to crank the engine over with the Magneto's off which also shuts down all the injectors four and five times and then while it was still spinningflip the switch for the mags and fire it up to clear the cylinders
The worst pit incident I've ever seen happened at Houston Raceway, in 1991, or 92, during the Slick 50 Nationals. A Top Fuel Funny car was staged, with the body up and suddenly accelerated, right when a track security guard was walking across the lane, about 20' in front of the car. She went right into the blower belt and got whipped around like a rag doll. You ever seen something that was so abrupt and shocking that it made your stomach hurt, almost to the point of nausea? It was like that, and I had already seen a couple of dead bodies up close and had witnessed some nasty industrial accidents. Anyway, after she was life flighted out, the track announced that she was ok and talking. Kinda think that was BS, since once they got the car stopped, she was completely limp and never moved again.
I worked on the UPS car that was fixing to run along side him. That thing was the worst I ever saw starting one of these things up, never had one blow up on me. I always like to run the car on gas after shutting the fuel pump off during the warmup. That way there isn't any nitro in the cylinders after it shuts off.
ok, maybe i’m missing something, but that lifting the body can cause those cars to open throttle seems a lot like star trek control consoles having explosive mains power conduits running through them... flawed design.
After a warm up you will see teams lower the rear of the car with to down nozzle fuel lines disconnected at the back of the cylinder head to remove the fuel. Lol they called it hydraulic back then witch is incorrect . Its just the nitro lighting at a inopportune time
Back in the pits, the Weiss guys were saying it was because of the new intake they were using. I think they probably just forgot to back the engine down before cranking it.
They use nitro methane whatever you do even if switch off the ground nothing can save it the engine has so much compresion that it can light the methane
Nitro is unstable as hell, and even more so in hot weather, so it doesn't take much to set it off. It seems it would be to their advantage if there was some way to vent the cylinders between run times to prevent a volatile fuel buildup. Things can get out-of-hand quickly when you work at the speed of these guys between runs, no matter how careful they are.
I would think that the driver position in top fuel drags would be better up front near the front wheels. Safer from the engine and better weight distribution imho.
Why are the cars so long? nikolaiownz Weight distribution is VIP in all engineering designs. Why do you think they have the trolley wheels at the back? And why design the car so long in length?

You have to starve it of fuel. Cutting the fuel is the only option.
The ground switch doesn't solely prevent this... If there's enough heat already in the cylinder, the compression can light it off.
