      @@PeterKeaneMusic I have an affinity for Skip James and all his work....Not to start a "chat", but curious if you play his songs (or could share some lessons if so).//?? Also, anything more (especially lessons) of MJH is greatly honored.

    Did he really record it in 28? I have never been able to find a recording that early. I wish I could find a fat discography of pre 50s delta and piedmont stuff. I’m obsessed

    Peter, love the tune and you’re playing, but to me you’re bass notes lack clarity and definition. Maybe a thumb pick might help, but no big deal if you like it. I used to do many Travis style songs and thought something didn’t sound right until I used a thumb pick on certain songs. To each his own, but thanks for the tune.

    • @PeterKeaneMusic
      @PeterKeaneMusic  Před 3 měsíci

      Thanks Rob! I actually always use a thumbpick not sure why I didn’t here ( maybe because there’s always someone that says it’s heresy to play John Hurt with a thumbpick 🤣). Totally agree about the importance of articulate bass notes. Thanks for listening!

    As a banjo player, this style of guitar playing suits me well. Here's my attempt at covering a Neil Young classic (Comes A Time) in a Mississippi John Hurt style: czcams.com/video/emQaHKzaf-I/video.html

    Peter are you . muting the bass strings on the E chord?? My low e is really lingering and doesn't sound great?? Great lesson by the way

    • @PeterKeaneMusic
      @PeterKeaneMusic  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi Sean - Yeah, I am - more by habit than anything (prob more idiomatic Merle Travis than John Hurt). Not sure if John Hurt did it like that, but that quickly chopped bass note def works well with his music - gives it a nice bounce.

    • @seanjoyce404
      @seanjoyce404 Před 6 lety +1

      Peter Keane ya it sounds much better when the string is open to mute it. Just beginning to learn John Hurt at the moment and your videos are a real help. Ive learned Louis Collins and railroad bill so far and going to learn this next. Playing about 10 months now. Cheers for the lessons

    Hi Peter. I have played piano for 50 years, and tried my hand at acoustic guitar and even a little banjo ( three pick style). But I can't call myself a string virtuosa. But you have to admit to yourself that you still don't pick it like MJH who picked it since he was 7 years old. BTW, I like the Sam Chatmon version even better than MJH. But that's just a matter of preference; not that he played the instrument better.
