I'm still pretty new to content creating, but I went all-in. I only have 5 videos up so far... (#6 is why I'm here). I've been dragging my feet on doing too much with audio.
But it's now at the point that I can't any longer...
I make vlog-style walking videos of Miami Beach (South Beach), and I swear, every scenario creates a new obstacle - this weeks, being the biggest so far! On top of that - it's audio!
I make walking-style videos, for viewers that like 'sensory overload'. A creative mix of a spicy rich cultural vibe, with a lot of action(yeah, walking videos)
I try to find creative ways to bring it (not sure why I did this to myself - but I'm loving the challenge!).
This video (#6) is a "Rain-walking" video - that if done right - will have tropical rainfall & lots of upbeat musical stimulation as there aren't as many people about! LOL
So, how am I going to keep the dramatic sound of torrential rain, while providing upbeat musical vibes, and the occasional voice interaction with people along the way? I dunno yet! 😂

Awesome, that's great you started a channel! So it sounds like you've just got to learn how to balance all of the audio/sound that you want in the video. It's going to be easiest if you have the sound effects/music from somewhere so they can be in their own track. But after you get the sounds you want, it's just mixing it all together.

Before this video...I used to adjust the audio according to my liking and upload it to CZcams and then I would check the audio in "stats for nerds" and if they showed any negative numbers...I would decrease the overall volume and re-upload and recheck and so on and same for big positive numbers
BUT
Today you introduced me to this incredible technique. This will save so much of my time. I will surely try this the next time I shoot and upload any videos.

Audio is most certainly more important than video. I'm the same way when watching CZcams videos. If the audio is not good then I'm not watching that video. I've only started using Davinci Resolve in the last few months so I'm learning a ton of where things are from your videos. Thank you!

Good video. Regarding the -14LUFS recommended by CZcams, this is integrated loudness across the whole video, so going over this number short term isn't a big deal. Also if you do go over, the volume will just be turned down not compressed, so it won't alter your sound. You can check this yourself by right-clicking a video and selecting stats for nerds. This video for example shows Volume / Normalized 100% / 100% (content loudness -2.5dB), meaning you could have gone 2.5dB louder before hitting the loudness normalization.
Yes, exactly. Also, youtube doesn't increase the volume if you are under -14dB, it only turns it down if you are over. You are simply losing level if you undershoot it and it'd be better to aim a little over and let youtube turn it down, then you will be right at the max of -14dB.

I haven't upgraded to the latest version yet because I saw several people on the Resolve forum posting about audio sync problems. I really don't want to risk it, so I'll wait for the next patch. However, the LUFS metering on the bus is incredible. I've been using the Youlean Loudness Meter VST which keeps a running graph so you can see the LUFS over time, but I love the way Resolve implemented this. With it imprinted directly onto a track it will be so much easier to go back to the exact spot in the project that needs adjusting. Very, very nice!

I can confirm audio is more important than image quality. People will put up with less quality of the images but they will not tolerate poor quality audio. I forget which director said this but its saying again. If I play you the visual of a beach, you can only imagine yourself at that particular beach. If you blindfold someone and play them the soundscape of a beach, they will be transported to any beach in their memories!! Good audio is that important!!

Perfect! I found the loudness answer at about the 9 minute mark on the old video and you explained it much better in this newer video at about the 15-minute mark. Thank you so much!! I noticed the loudness meter DaVinci Resolve 18.6 (your reference) showed -14 at the -0- mark (Once adjusted) on the loudness meter while my Free DaVinci 18.5 still shows -0- at the -0- mark . FYI. Finally, is -14 the standard for Instagram, Twitter, and Tik Tok as well? Thanks again!
Awesome, glad you found the info you needed. With the meters, you can actually change it so it shows either zero or -14, depends on how you want to see it. It was the same in previous versions of Resolve as well. -14 LUFS s the standard for CZcams, you’d have to check for the other platforms, I’m not sure about those since CZcams is my jam. 😜
Thank you for the video. But in my opinion, it would be better if you explained in the video how to work with audio tracks instead of clips. For example, I work with very large and complex projects in Premier Pro and want to switch to Davinci, and it's very time-consuming and difficult to edit each clip and music separately. In Premier Pro, I can simply select the entire track with the voice and click "Normalize Sound" in Essential Sound, and it will normalize the volume of all dialogues, because it takes a long time to edit the volume of 217 clips. So far, I haven't found a similar tool in Davinci, and normalizing the volume through the track effect doesn't help much.
You’re welcome! You can normalize the entire track and or individual clips in just a few clicks. For individual clips, right click on the clip and choose normalize. Then select what you want to normalize to. You can also select the track and do the same thing with the option of having resolve normalize the track as a whole or looking at all of the clips individually within the track and normalize them individually all at once.
Pretty much anything you can do in other programs you can do in Resolve, the process might just be a little different.

Thanks for the good work you are doing. Please, how can you set volume level for project that is having different dialogue and music to sound at the same level after rendering it. I mean when watching it some part of the volume won’t be low and some high. It should be the some volume level.
You're welcome! So in DaVinci Resolve, split all of the different dialogue, music, sfx, etc. into different tracks. Then you just have to mix it and balance the levels to how you want it to sound in the export. You don't want everything at the same level. Aim for the levels I mentioned in this video and you should be good to go.
I hope the step 1 also applies if we are recording not from camera but from another mic. I wonder why you didn't even mention even one time about external microphone?
Yes, same is true for an external mic. I’d aim for the same levels. In this example, I focused on recording audio directly to the camera. But regardless, if you’re on an external recorder, recording into a computer, recording into any other device, the concept is the same in the levels you should try and achieve are the same.
Ok...it seems I'm finally getting the right outcome for my first video.
However that's my situation after running the whole project:
TP: +0.5 (it was -0.5 before last clip)
LFS Loudness: -4.5
I think it should not be compressed by CZcams but now I have 2 questions:
1)Does youtube compress only Loudness or even True Peak? I mean, if LFS are ok but True peak is higher than -1.0, will youtube compress the video?
2)The "TP" value that I read on Mixer, is an absolute value or is referred to the Peak level I chose in the normalization? I explain: I used "Normalize Audio Levels" and chose the option "Target Level: -1 dBTP" and "Target Loudness: -14 LKFS". The "TP" value that I read in the mixer (+0.5) means 0.5 absolute value or -1.0 + 0.5= -0.5?
17:45 CZcams settings
I understand setting proper audio levels, but I didn't know it could be done in camera. Now I do and knowing is half the battle. But here's my dilemma. Right now all my videos are being done on my cellphone. I've looked through my settings and cannot find anything in the Settings about audio levels. I have a Samsung S23 Ultra which is an Android operating system. Am I SOL as far as changing the levels? Honestly, the audio recorded on my phone is actually pretty good so far. So I'm guessing it doesn't matter much at this time. Which is good, right? One of these years I hope to get a real camera to record videos. But that's a little bit further down the road.
Glad the video was helpful! For the most part, your phone will do a good job of recording audio automatically. You probably need a separate app if you want to be able to control it. If you like what you're getting for now, I wouldn't worry about it. 😜
Hi Jason, great tut but I do have a question. The camera audio is set but you this only works if you are actually recording on the camera along with using OBS. correct? For when I run a cable from my Canon 70D to OBS it just shows a clean screen but without audio, which is a big time bummer...Then you of course upload the recording to DR...Thanks for all your help...
You can still set the audio input level on your camera, you should see it on the camera screen, even if you don’t see it on the clean feed in OBS. You can also adjust your audio levels in OBS using the meter there, to make sure the audio is coming in at a good level. then, once you get into a Davinci Resolve, you can verify all of the audio levels for the project.
@@JasonYadlovski I hear what you’re saying but there’s no audio signal going to OBS on my Mac using a mini usb to usb-2 and I’ve tried several times. I would upload or even look at the preview of a test clip I did, BUT there’s NO Audio at all…my hookup is only giving me Clean HDMI… I’m using a Rhode Mic with good levels showing on my 70D menu screen.. I’m beating my brains out to try and do workarounds…Jason but if what you’re telling me is fact then can you guide me along with a step by step vid with audio connection and cables used along with settings you use on OBS.. I believe it’ll not only help me but others with this issue. Again, much thanks for reaching out.
Something must be a little off somewhere. I don't use OBS very often, but I have played with it in the past and done both audio from a camera and separate external audio. Both levels can be adjusted in OBS. I'm going to guess and say is OBS settings that is causing the problem for you somewhere. I'd search youtube a bit for videos on OBS and audio in OBS and see if any of that helps.
Do you have any videos about editing two dialogue tracks (from two microphones) in Davinci? I use the Rode wireless pro with two microphones used at the same time (two people) and I don't know how to edit them - whether to keep the two mics merged on one track or split them into two tracks, and then how to go about editing these. I'm also confused about whether to use mono or stereo when I am recording two microphones (two people) at the same time. I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts about this. Thanks!
Hey! Ideally you'd want to separate the 2 sources of audio. Are your mics recorded where one mic goes to the left channel and one mic goes to the right channel? If they are, I'd create 2 mono tracks, copy the audio clip into both tracks, then you can select the clip, right click, go to clip attributes, then the audio tab and for the audio source, set it to both left or both right. This would give you 2 tracks with one mic in each track. Does this make sense? @@JasonYadlovski Yes, that makes sense. I've done what you suggested - and, like you said, this gave 2 tracks with one mic in each track. However, there is an echo from the voice in the opposite mic. Sometimes both people speak at the same time and interrupt each other so muting one track to get rid of the echo is not an option. There's an option on the Rode Wireless Pro to set the recording of the mics to merged mode instead of split mode. That merges both mics into one mono track. I'm thinking that maybe recording the audio in merged mode would be a better option because the echo would disappear? I don't know if that makes sense- most people say that you need to record in split mode if you're using two mics. What do you think?
If it sounds ok with both mics in one audio track, that's ok. I only say separate it so you can edit the audio slightly differently if necessary - for example, different EQ settings. But if it sounds ok when they are together, that 's no problem.
If you have them separate, you can try using the expander or gate to help prevent the bleed between the 2 mics.

Does the clip always need to be played in real time to detect peaking?
Many times you can hear it or you will see it on the meters of your camera, recording device or in Resolve. In Resolve, if the waveforms are all the way to the top of the clips, there's a good chance the clip might be peaking.
How should you set your audio level in the camera when your mic (shotgun or lapel) also has a volume control?
It will take some experimenting, but I'd try setting the mic around 50% or so and see what you get coming into the camera. I don't like turning the camera input up too much since the pre-amps aren't great on most cameras. But it's a balance and takes some experimenting.

Yes, you can start with trying that. If you noticed that there’s some background hissing, try, turning down the transmitter or the receiver, a little bit, and turn it up the levels in your camera a little bit.

WhT about when you get loud during recording? Shouldn’t you record with lower gain?
If your audio is not peaking/clipping, you should be OK. If it is clipping I would set your levels manually so that the loudest part of the recording would not peak/clip. You can always boost the quieter parts in post.
What about audio levels on a smartphone phone if not recording on a camera?
If you're using an app that has controls, you can set it. If not, you're stuck w/ what the phone will do and you can adjust it in post.

I have some less expensive ones from 7Ryms that are pretty good - the D4 mini and D4 Duo. I think I've got links to both in the description.
So, you have a camera, in my case, sony A6600, and you have a Ninja V hooked up and a Sennheiser wireless audio set up.... Do you have anything regarding that? Because I can't seem to get the sound right no matter what I do. It's like the sound is being cranked up to the max when I speak a little louder and then dropped to near zero when I'm a little softer speaking. It still sounds like I'm maxed out though no matter what level I set it at. Not sure if you've done a video on this or not.
So a couple of things, is your audio hooked up to the ninja V separately or is it connected to the camera and being sent to the ninja V? Either way, you should be able to adjust your audio levels on your camera, and from my quick search, it looks like you can also adjust your audio levels on your ninja V. Depending on the kind of Sennheiser wireless set up, you have, there’s probably levels you can adjust them that as well. I think it’ll take some trial and error but I would start with the wireless microphone, set your audio settings on there first, I know a lot of times it’s not too exact with those types of systems but maybe go around 1/2 to 3/4 of the way up. Then take a look at your camera or the ninja V and see what the level is coming in at, make an adjustment there if you need to. If it’s too loud, change it on the microphone or try boosting the levels on either the camera or in the ninja V.
The key is that you do not want to be peaking. It’s OK if the audio is a little bit low, you can always bring it up in post a bit, you just don’t want to be peaking and losing audio information.

@@JasonYadlovski Right now the sennheiser is going into the ninja V. I've had go into the camera in the past but can't remember why I switched it. I can adjust levels on the sennheiser and I've done that on both the ninja and sennheiser and if I bring the levels below peaking then I cant hear hardly anything I'm recording after that. It's been frustrating to the point that I've been recording with my phone just to avoid the issues and my phone seems to get everything right every time. And even with the levels adjusted, I still get the really loud as if I just turned the volume all the way up when I speak a little louder and then near nothing on the volume when I'm speaking softer. I believe I turned the recording off on the camera itself because it was recording extra tracks and they were creating echos so generally on the camera itself I have the sound off.
Have you tried checking the receiver and the transmitter for the wireless system? They usually both have gains on them for levels. Which Sennheiser system is it?
When you’re listening to it and it doesn’t sound good, what editing program are you in, Davinci resolve? If you’re in Resolve, where does your audio fall on the meters? I’m sure there’s gonna be a way to balance it all out, it doesn’t make sense that it would not work properly with some tweaking.

Can’t you normalize to -10 db instead of using fader
You could, but the average db level might not end up where you want it to be. But it's worth a try to see how your clips react to it.
Noob question incoming - so please don't laugh. The volume levels in my track don't match the output in the mixer. For example: some parts of the track (because of very low levels of dialogue and bad mics) I have to set to +11db, in order to get an output on the mixer of -10db. In other cases, the track volume (for any dialogue components) is set anywhere from -10db up to +12db in order for it to show as around -10db in the mixer. Is that normal, or has something else happened that I'm not aware of? Help please!
One thing to keep in mind, it doesn't matter where you need to set the gain on the clips (using the gain line or the volume in the inspector), just set it based on the track meter. Try and get the dialogue around -10 dB. Use a compressor to help even out the highs (loud parts) and the makeup to boost lows (quiet parts). Unless you only have 1 track, the levels on Bus1 probably won't match an individual track and that's ok.
