- This week we had to abandoned our van. We made a huge mistake and ended up leaving our bus in a storage facility until we're allowed back into Norway to get her. It's the end of van life.
And van life Norway was going so well!! đ But luckily we had another plan up our sleeves! Big thank you to âȘ@visitscotland⏠for inviting us up and putting on another fabulous itinerary. Scotland is one of our favourite places in the whole world and we can now tick the Orkney Islands off our bucket list!

Since you can come back to Norway in the middle of May, I recommend coming in time for the 17th of May. It is Norways national day, and it is a BIG celebration all over the country. People dress up in traditional national clothing (called a bunad), there are parades with children singing songs and celebrating, there's loads of fun activities, ice cream and hot dogs. Definitely something that would be fun to experience!đ€©

If you make your way to Inverness, you'll have a great vegan experience. I absolutely loved my time there. Scotland always holds our heart, it's where my family originated from and we have a lot of family there.
Never been to Orkney, but made it to Shetland for Up Helly Aa viking fest about 19 years ago and was blown away by the people on that little bunch of rocks out in a really hostile sea. During the festival there was a bar in Lerwick which didn't close for a week; musicians were trading seats between songs, and the landlady was coming round every hour handing out cups of gorgeous soup every hour. Special place. No-one locks anything, and if you didn't get on with your neighbours, either they'd kill you or the elements would! Epic place. x

Like wow, what if this was meant to be because you just had to see Norway during our peak months!? đ Custard will do just fine too â„ I hope that you'll take the coastal road from Lofoten and down south again, because that's where you'll see the very best of Norway apart from Lofoten. You have SunnmĂžre, Romsdalen, Stryn, Loen, Bondhusvatnet, Olden, Urke, Rampestreken (famous hike), and so, so, so much more! We live close by a lot of those stunning areas, so please let us know if you need a break from bus life to clean some clothes and relax, we'll be happy to have you, and Odin, our Shetland sheepdog will be stoked to say hi to two new besties! Also, don't hesitate to reach out if you need any extra tips for this area as my partner is a mountain guide and can give some great tips for hikes if you need any đ take care legends âš

Brings back memories of our 6 week visit to Orkney back in 2013. Our oldest lived there for just under 2 years. During our visit, half the time we stayed indoors due to the extreme weather. Skara Brae was amazing and we experienced the same weather as you. We were pleasantly surprised with the local cuisine in Kirkwall. It was excellent. Fantastic part of the world. Being Canadian, we were surprised to see so many đšđŠ flags when out and about in the countryside around Kirkwall.

I feel for you Trev!! I get violently ill on ships. We took a ferry from Wales to Dublin and I spent the entire trip in the mid ship lounge with all the other "sickies" while hubby dear had a 3 course dinner! The thought alone gave me chills!! Love from London, ON đšđŠ

Isnât it wonderful, we have been three times now, there is so much to see, Iâm sure youâll want to return, itâs just Orkney.
The people, the wildlife, the coastline, the food, the wind, the history in abundance from thousands of years.
We have visited now quite a few island within the Orkneyâs.
Glad you enjoyed yourselves, if you go back try the Kirkwall apartments, one they are modern and clean and just off the high st in Kirkwall, and of course you can get to all the islands from Kirkwall Harbour.

Hei I'm originally from Norway đđŒ been in the UK nearly 25 years now. If you're travelling there you will absolutely love that time of year (May/ June). Like others have mentioned, 17 May is epic. Remember if you're in the North in June you will probably see the midnight sun! My family is from Hallingdal so I'm biased, but there are some incredible fjords there like Gudvangen. FlĂ„m is close by, you can get the FlĂ„msbanen train from FlĂ„m to Bergen which is said to be the most spectacular train journey in the world. From Bergen get the Hurtigruten ferry along the fjords northwards to chase the midnight sun. Lots of amazing towns worth a visit on that coastal path like Ă lesund, Trondheim, TromsĂž. Enjoy!
