ONE DAY IN HEL, POLAND! (Almost didn't make it.) A fun seaside day-trip from Gdansk.

  • Due to a error on a platform sign, I almost headed off at Gdynia in the wrong direction, ending up in some random part of Poland. Fortunately there was another train two hours later. Hel was a delightful place, long wide beach, quiet forests, and just enough points of interest to fill a full day.

    Regional bus line 666 is operates in the summer season from Dębki (a small village on the seafront) via Władysławowo to Hel. Operator is PKS Gdynia.

      @Vengir Před rokem +1

      @@Michal_Bauer Ah, yeah, I think I know why I thought that they changed it. The line 666 only goes there in the summer, while outside of that, there is a different line there. If you visit their website outside of summer, it doesn't mention the line 666 anywhere, except on the map. If you don't look at the map, then any summer lines basically don't exist.

Just watch out for the small Bronze Knomes. You can trip over them. There are over 350 of them. City was called Breslau until post war. Nice place to visit. Been there a few times. @stachgie Před rokem +7

      Just to let you know, the meal wasn't that cheap. The price given (7 pln) is per 100 grams of fish, you pay after it's been fried and weighted plus extra for fries/ salad/ drinks etc. So it ain't exactly Bangkok in 1995 ;) . That being said, 7 pln for plaice (it is a plaice not a turbot!) is a fair price. During holiday season prices are getting ridiculous and people have a sort of national game of "bills of terror" , showing on social media how much they (over)paid for a simple meal at a restaurant in a seaside resort.

    I`m glad that we are already more technologically prepared and the train journey is no longer such a nightmare ;) You just have to be careful, all information is fortunately in front of your nose.

So paths will be very well maintained, but empty out of season...Noel Coward said mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun, and its the same sort of thing on the Polish coast....not many Poles venture up there outside of the Summer Seasons unless its for medicinal purposes rather then holiday. Also the Baltic sea has very strict fishing quotas and laws, so it is VERY hard to find fish to eat that was fished there in the local restaurants. I know the pain, been there and done it. Plus the stuff is for some unknown reason priced per 100g rather then priced per piece of fish. Looking forward to the next video :)

    There IS a 666 bus service. Actually at 8:08 is where I found them parked up, by the warehouses. You missed a trick by not going to Sopot which is the middle town of the Tri-city area. Plenty of places to eat, a nice beach and brilliant train access to Gdynia and Gdansk.

    Hej Scott, I get such a kick from your vlogs of Poland. I've been living here for 15 years. So funny to see some of your misadventures. A few tips... everything in Poland ends up in a surprise. It seems the national motto is nie dziala (knee jawa) once you accept that it's all good. It means... it doesn't work. Looking forward to more vlogs. If your in Zywiec we should meet up I've got stories to tell. :)

    Offseason is actually the best time to visit Hel, but I would strongly recommend doing it by bike (there is a route going from Gdańsk, around 110 km one way), but the views are beautiful and you can start from Władysławowo so it shouldn't be more than 30 km one way). The route goes on the inside side, however there are also great views on the other side. It's quite magical to see the beach that is empty up to the horizon line, which is very common to see, but of course not in the actual Hel, because in my opinion the peninsula is the best thing to discover, not the actual Hel city

    I'm sorry for this situation. But you had to look at the ARRIVALS board. You would not go far, you would return to the airport in Gańsk. What exists today is New Hel. As a result of the disaster, StaryHel was almost completely absorbed by the Baltic Sea. It was a large port settlement, even at that time larger than Gdańsk. The tourist season is June, July and August. It's crowded there then. You must have been to Hel either before or after the tourist season

    Wrong board informations are common in Poland
    Last time in Wrocław - they display information on board for destination i was going, but instead they sent train terminating there.
    Unhappy train crew has not easy task to get rid off train passengers from train, because peple trying to enter from crowded platform.
    And usually with few trains per day - missing one can be painfull.
    Plus Your ticket may be not valid for other train company. Or when train leave station outside "time window" for short journeys.
