Hi guys! Sorry for my cold everyone - and it was freezing early in the morning which made it worst! Which one of these would make you choose it as a job?

Hi. I have been watching a couple of your videos and agree to most things you say about this career path. I am middle aged and do a corporate job . Few years back, on a break, I gave my pursuit of an outdoor career a good push. Like did a few volunteering stints, attended certificate courses. However, nothing permanent worked out. Also, it's difficult to quit a stable career and get into something totally new N With a full time job it's not easy to do volunteering stints (my previous volunteering were all for more than a week). So, how do you think I can, kind of, keep in touch with nature and wildlife as a career , such that some day, if i am finally in a situation to take it up full time, I am employable. I live in a big city in India, we have a huge zoo. but no volunteer scope there. We have the sundarbans but i am not sure what I can do on a weekend there. The himalayas and dooars are 10-12 hrs from my place. There is an issue of human - elephant conflict in the dooars area. with trains passing right through the elephant corridor (just sharing). However, not sure what to do there. Can I sit at home and pick up 1 topic and try to master it. Say for eg,..the human - elephant conflict i talked about. yes, I won't be hands on but at least I would know stuff about it. Advice much appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks so much for your comment! Firstly what was your corporate job and the certificates you did? All jobs and qualifications have transferable skills, and there is bound to be something that you can add unique value to. Human Elephant Conflict is a huge and important topic to tackle, and needs all the help it can get - often from many angles. What organisations are working on it in the area? What researchers are working on it? Depending on your skills could you assist in any way with comms around it, fundraising, social media, grant writing. Could you physically assist with anything? The zoo you mentioned to they test out any mitigation measures on their elephants to inform decision making? Is that something they would be open to? (Contributing directly to conservation) I think it’s a great idea to delve into the topic for a bit, do a literature search for any research done in that specific area and in similar areas, also set up a google alert for Human Elephant Conflict and keep really “up to date” with the latest news around it (you often get really good ideas from news articles before they take the length steps to publication). Start to gather key names/organisations in the field and follow them, their websites etc, see where the gap is and where your skills and interests can assist. Good luck!!

Also just to add, often “helping from afar” eventually develops into visits and more hands on experience. We have had many people from afar to visit our organisation and become very involved that you wouldn’t quickly say that they were traditionally what you would think of as “outdoor careers”
