It's FM. It's more a slightly flat peaked Sine with overtones than a Triangle. It's also stepped like the NES Triangle.
Yeah, the beginning of the song leads you to think Nintendo and then all of a sudden you're hit with blast processing that Nintendon't.
I always wondered if the Genesis could fake a NES-style triangle wave using a sine wave. Now that I've heard it, mind blown.

It uses the 8-bit sound chip used in the Sega Genesis, perferably I would say it's the master systems sound chip.
