  • The photographs of the Roman city of Palmyra in Syria were taken by Félix Bonfils (1831-1885), the most prolific photographer of the Near East in the second half of the nineteenth century. Bonfils’ extensive studio portraits and images of landscapes and architecture introduced Western viewers to the Near East and were particularly sought after by travelers to the region.
In 1750 and 1751, Robert Wood (1717-1771), along with the draftsman Giovanni Battista Borra and two young scholars, traveled throughout the eastern Mediterranean regions, including Syria. They took careful measurements and drawings of Palmyra. Robert Wood’s The Ruins of Palmyra, published in London in 1753, was the first systematic publication of ancient structures. It had a profound impact on the popularity of neoclassical architecture in Europe and the United States. For example, “Eagle Decorating an Ancient Roman Temple” was a model for the image on the Seal of the United States. The publication also includes depictions of Palmyra’s coffered ceilings, which inspired the ceiling of the north entrance of the Freer Gallery of Art.

True. Thank god many of its ruins survived, as according to Paolo Matthiae, an archaelogist wh discovered the ancient Syrian city of Ebla, another rich city with great history in its own right, that only 20-30% is actually damaged, and using advanced technology as well as traditional methods, 98% of the ancient city can and will be resotred. The temple of Bel, while its cella and some columns lost, huge parts of it survived, as its fortified gate and archaway survive, and they hold grand beautiful decorations and ornaments on their ceiling. The Roman theatre is in great shape and what was destroyed of it is extremely easy to restore, as it is only one small wall one the top of some columns, the tetrapylon have been and will be restored, and the arch of triumph can be entirely restored to. The only thing that will probab;y be gone is the small temple of Baalshaamin, as no stonework survives so restoring it is hard.... They're still working on plans to restore the city and things are looking up for its fate, luckily. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palmyra#Restoration

I think it would be only fair to have former president obozo match dollar for dollar with president Trump. Obozo has millions after all.
