Lagu ini menceritakan mengenai Wewe Gombel hantu yang terkenal suka menculik anak-anak, tetapi tidak mencelakainya.
Nama "Wewe Gombel" berasal dari sebuah legenda yang terjadi di bukin Gombel, Semarang, dimana tinggalnya sebuah pasangan. Setelah beberapa tahun menikah, sang suami sadar bahwa istrinya tidak dapat mengandung, dan ia mulai berhenti mencintainya dan meninggalkannya. Suatu hari, sang istri menemukannya sedang bercinta dengan wanita lain. Tersakiti oleh kehianatan suaminya, ia marah dan membunuhnya.
Wanita ini menjadi buronan warga setelah mengetahiui insiden pembunuhan tersebut, yang mengakibatkannya menjadi terpojok dan depresi. Oleh karena itu, akhirnya ia bunuh diri.
Akibatnya, ia menjadi Wewe Gombel, dan berjanji akan melindungi dan memberi kasih sayang anak-anak yang ditelantarkan dan diabaikan oleh orang tuanya. Setelah orang tuanya bertobat, ia akan mengembalikannya.
ENGLISH TRANSLATION:
The Wewe Gombel is a female supernatural being or ghost based on Javanese mythology, one that is notorious for kidnapping children. The myth is taught to encourage children to be cautious and to stay home at night. Traditionally the Wewe Gombel is represented as an old lady with long hanging breats.
The ghost was named Wewe Gombel because it is related to an event that, according to ancient folklore, happened in Bukit Gombel, Semarang, where long ago a married couple lived. The couple's marriage lasted for years, however but as time went by the husband realized that his wife was barren and stopped loving and neglected her, leaving her alone for long periods of time, forcing her to live a life of sorrow. One unfortunate day, she followed him and caught him in a sexual relationship with another woman. Hurt by her husband's betrayal she became furious and killed him. Faced with the crime, her whole village became angry and gathered in a mob and chased her from the village. Despairing at the ostracization and continual harassment, she suffered major depression and committed suicide.
After death her vengeful spirit became Wewe Gombel. She dwells in the trees where she swores to protect children who have been mistreated or neglected by their paretns. She "kidnaps" them and treats them lovingly as a grandmother would, taking care of them and protecting them until their parents repent, at which point she returns them.
