I must be a unicorn, because I bought both.
My terramaster is running unraid. I love both of these boxes.
If I had to only have one the synology would be my pick, because the software.
I’m curious about how the Apple universe blends with either, or any particular NAS overall. That would assume on the software end, re: compatibility. (I’ve rewatched the software chapter, twice, but…) Does any Apple software work, or does one have to substitute their software for Synology orTerramaster’s built-ins? BTW, not crazy about seagulls either. Thanks!
I've been a HUGE fan of Synology since 2011. I'm currently running a DS718+ primarily for file storage/sharing, photo storage, and Plex. I was hoping to upgrade this year to a more capable machine, then use my DS718+ as an offsite backup. DSM offers lots of software, SHR being one of the main reasons I bought into Synology over years ago. But I'm not at all impressed with current Synology hardware offerings. And it looks like the Terramaster will meet my needs. I really wish Synology would step it up a bit on the hardware !!

this, i am big fan of Synology and meet with them 1-2 times year through my company but I feel most of their hardware offering are very lacking.
So, do you hate seagulls then.... I was originally going with an F423 box when I moved on my DS918+. Ended up with an Asustor box instead. I would look at an F223 (2 bay) to replace my DS220 if DSM started making noise about my preferred WD Red Pro drives. Good vid as usual.
For Proxmox, the TM F4-423 wins hands down with 32 GB ram. I'm really looking forward to their next-gen (N300?).
@@donaldothomoson Woops, yes, I meant 32 GB of ram.
Nice review mate!.. well done
hey. on amazon and the product page, the terramaster doesn't t have the n5105 cpu but the n5095 which is worse then n5105 according to intel (n5095 has 16 execution units vs 24 for n5105 and the n5105 has a tdp 10w vs the 15w of the n5095)
Good point, also on Terra master's own site.
You reference the F4-423 but have I missed a review of the F4-210? I only ask, because for just over £200 it seems to good to be true? Is there a reason you are staying clear of it? Just to be clear, for a personal use for this box, it literally would be a NAS and only a NAS - no extra home server duties for it.
If I'm correct the F4-210 is based on ARM so less flexibility on the OS you use with it and probably no possibility to use Docker
? Why do TM not like seagate exos drives 18tb?
Great video Robert. Really appreciate the breakdown between the 2. Were I going to buy another NAS it would definitely be the TerraMaster. For the love of God please retire that guitar riff between segments. :)
You're the 3rd to highlight the guitar riff! I'll be ditching it, don't worry. Though it will appear one more time this week I'm afraid. Then, GONE!
Guess what! I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more guitar riff.
i only want to store my movies en tv shows on a 2.5 gig NAS en play them when i want to. Thats all so i think the Terramaster is mine...and it looks way better than any other black device...
Are you actually wearing one of those old Casio watches with a calculator included?
I might actually have like 18-20 of them...
I just use mine for Plex. I chose the Terramaster based on cost against the overpriced legacy technology of the Synology. I used to be a Synology fan because the software is so good. But for me just to use it for Plex it makes no difference in the end
8 months after this comment how are you getting on with it? I'd pretty much just be using Plex too and I find the Terramaster appealing despite previously being resigned to Synology being worth it.
@@mickthebull
It’s great
Once you set up Plex how you want it just sits there and delivers your videos. Hardly ever touch other that upload new videos from my Mac.
There is something i allways wondered. lets say you got a terra master and you put ur drives in. the os installs on first disk. sooo what happens when that disk dies or fails ? xD nas will not start again and ur data is lost ?
The OS is put on the Volume amd your volume is managed by the Raid so your OS is also protected.
You should see the os a hidden share which is reserved for the os
Has anyone actually tried putting 32 Gigs of RAM in the terra-master? Processor specs on Intel's website state max RAM of 16GB (for both N5095 and N5105.)
16Gb per channel and there is two ;)
@@hman72y Thanks for your reply, but I don't know what that means. Could you elaborate? Were you able to make this product work with a generic off the shelf 32GB of RAM?
@@sfertman There is two memory slot and each slot is connected to one channel.
In my case I've 8Gbp per channel so I can't validate
Sounds like Synology is the Apple version and Terramaster is like Android.
do you really enjoy talking about NAS on camera each day? For me, it is too much and your videos are too long.
If you can say it once, why not say the same thing by rearranging the sentence 3 or 4 times. I often think of Mojo Jojo when watching his vids. I crank 'em to 1.5x. But I do appreciate the time and effort put into making quality video content like this.
