My mother, Dorothy Busby (1926-2010), was born in Small Heath, Birmingham. She was 13 years old when WW2 started. As a child, I heard her stories about the horrors of being bombed, loss of family members in Coventry and fighting abroad, loss of friends, rationing and nights spent in air raid shelters.
Her education finished at age 13 because the school was bombed. Attempts to ensure education continued petered out mainly, I think, because of the bombing. At age 14 my mother went to work in Wilson's Bakery and then at a Girling factory where she fitted brakes on tanks.
My mother's family suffered greatly in WW2. I think of her a great deal, particularly when I see film of what is happening in Ukraine. The Ukrainians are showing immense courage and resilience as my mother did. Bless them all. Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦 🇬🇧

I was born in Heathfield Road Maternity Hospital ,Handsworth B'Ham 1941, Mom said Airaid sirens sounded that day. Later, I was fitted out with a ''Mickey Mouse'' Gas Mask. I liked all the colours, but not the weird smell inside, which I remember well.

IT'S AMAZING HOW QUICKLY, WE ADAPTED OUR INDUSTRIES TO WAR WEAPONS AND MATERIALS. I , AS A 3 YEAR OLD, LIVED 6 MILES FROM CASTLE BROMWHICH WHERE THE SPITFIRES WERE MADE, IN WHAT WAS CALLED ''SHADOW FACTORIES''. MY EARLIEST MEMORY, WAS SITTING IN MY PUSH-CHAIR IN THE GARDEN, ON A SUNNY DAY, WHILE MOM HUNG THE WASHING OUT, WHEN 3 SPITFIRES ROARD OVER OUR HOUSE ROOF. OBVIOUSLY FROM THE LOCAL FACTORY, ON TEST, OR, MAYBE BEING FLOWN BY THOSE BRAVE LADIES OF THE ATA, FLYING THEM TO R.A.F FRONT LINE BASES DOWN SOUTH.
