The last 2 kitchen remodels I've done have open shelves above and closed cabinets below. All daily plates, bowls, glasses and coffee mugs are so easy to reach and return from the dishwasher. Now it's just my husband and I so it's not a lot of stuff and is in constant use so doesn't get dusty. Probably couldn't have done this with young kids!
I try to organize according to zones also and it seems to work pretty well. Our adult daughter has her own home but for one day needed to use our kitchen. I was not home that day and was delighted when she sent me a text telling me that my kitchen was so organized and easy to find things in areas she was going to use them.

Your kitchen is set up very well. I've had to do some rearranging because my partner insisted on having a rice cooker and a new set of food storage containers to meal prep. It's a good thing I decluttered the kitchen so it all worked out.

I miss having a big kitchen. Mine is the size of your sink and your prep area but it's all I need right now. When I lived in the states my kitchen set up was a lot like yours.

We are going to redo the kitchen in the future, it is a separate room now. Do you recommend open kitchen/living room?
I personally love having an open kitchen and living room. I would hate to be stuck in the kitchen without being able to interact with my family.
