- FromSoftware today is a juggernaut of the gaming industry with the revolutionary introduction of the soulslike. But the one game that never gets any love is their very first attempt: Demon's Souls. So now here we are ready to give it the appreciation it deserves. So let's talk about Demon's Souls, and how it successfully created a video game genre. Strap in boys and girls, and lets get down to business!
This was originally supposed to be my first video on the channel, but Adobe couldn't render it for some reason. Well turns out it was a blessing as I have gotten much better at content creation since then. So we're reviewing all the souls games this year, and Demon's Souls is the first on the list (besides Elden Ring last year).

100%, between getting the footage, writing, voicing and editing, making a video like this takes a ridiculous amount of time.
The Demon souls remake is one of my favorite souls games. It was my gateway drug lol
You missed out. I liked the remake so much, but the art style, atmosphere of the original on the ps3 was something so special and the remake just didn’t capture that. I think the graphical limitations of the original made it more endearing. The weird glowing eyes that looked almost alien like from some of the enemies contrasted with the dark drab environments made it feel dream like. It’s hard to describe. The remake felt too high fantasy and didn’t capture the horror of the original. Glad you enjoyed the remake. If you ever get a chance try the original. I kept my ps3 just to play it every year

Demon's Souls Remake is my favorite PS5 game and my favorite Souls game. I've played and platinumed Bloodborne, Darksouls, this and Elden Ring. I live each and every game to its core. There is something cathartic to me about Demon's Souls. I just can't get past what a wonderful te I had playing the original Souls game. Of course everything seems outdated compared to later Souls games...it was the FIRST Souls game. It gets put down because of its age and mechanics, but for me, the remake was an absolutely amazing experience. Very awesome video 👌

If I recall, it was Diablo (one or two) that first came up with "corpse runs". You used to be able to loot your own dead body on respawn, to get any gold you lost back.
Not just gold, but ALL of your equipment as well.

You're right, when the game first came out norhing was like it. I picked it up first week and loved it. I got bored of the self playing rpgs and Devil May Cry/God of War clones.
A lot of players struggled because they were used to games leveling for them based on their class. Demons Souls really gave you a lot of creativity and relied on you to make the correct choices. A lot of players leveled everything and used rare resources to upgrade too many different weapons. So by midgame, I would start to feel unfair.
Demons Souls today is kinda easy. Ive gone back found it and Dark Souls 1 the easiest in the franchise. Great games but a product of their time in regards to difficulty.
Demon’s Souls, Elden Ring, & BloodBorne are truly incredible. The rest are too but I don’t understand why these 3 aren’t the top 3 on every single list.

I'll always prefer the ps3 version over the pretty/cinematic ps5 remake. But i am happy the godfather of souls is getting it's recognition.
The respect you have for Demon's Souls is admirable. You mentioned in your Dark Souls video that that was your first Souls. I have listened to a ridiculous number of reviews and retrospectives, and you're probably the first content creator to show respect for the original despite it not being your first. Kudos to you for balanced and fair reviewing. Creators who played Ds3 and the likes first then go back to DS and complain irk me.
Love Demon's Souls, simple as, even the remake is alright despite mucking up the atmosphere quite a bit.
You dont get a pass though, you have to play the original to truly understand how many things were changed for the worse as well as the better. I think you need to specify in the title or description that you are speaking about the remake specifically, because the atmosphere is so much more generic in the remake among other things that were thrown out or translated poorly in favor of pretty visuals and a more "Dark Souls" vibe
props to the remake for leaving in all the busted insane shit you can do to twink or make crazy builds though, i appreciate that adherence to faithfully remaking it, just wish that applied to the music and tone

Amazing video bro but I would highly recommend you check out the original Demon's Souls too. Some of the changes made (visuals) kinda ruined it for the original players of the game. Main hate came with the creative liberty took by bluepoint.

Exactly, Remake fans just mumble the "U R Blinded by nostalgia", while the truth is every change they make either contradicts with lore or the original atmosphere. Sountrack was also much more "weird, eerie and unique". Not some generic epic medieval waanabe soundtrack. They are simply blinded by "realism" and ease of unoriginality", there is no reason to play the remake.
True. The original game had a lot of issues (the main one being tied to the PS3 hardware), but everything felt consistent and intentional. I have played the remake recently and there is a fair bit of "magic" that has been lost in translation.
@@Tayfungurses777 bro I played the remake and I've never heard of the game before. When I played it I felt something was missing it bugged me every zone I went to. It was beautiful but felt hollow at the same time. Like something was missing. Then I saw the original granted the graphics are dated as hell but it just felt right

2:12 No, you don't get a pass. Play the original. Even if you don't have a PS3, you can play it on PC for free now, look into it. The Bluepoint Remake is good, but contains multiple failures that detract from the whole. The original PS3 game is the better game. There are 100 reasons but I'll list just a few: The voice acting and music is universally agreed to be worse than the original, and detract from the overall tone of the game, a game which time is among the most important focal points. There's a reason why From Software didn't want there name anywhere near the remake. There are also other technical issues which they've failed to patch to this day because they don't care, the Dirty Colossus boss fight the fire has no collision, which means you can't cure yourself of the flies by touching a fire, which shows a complete lack of respect or understanding of the original boss concepts, which is like half of the point of the game. Invasions don't reward Souls which doesn't make any sense and also detracts from a gameplay perspective. Disconnecting from invasions has no punishment, no "online sin" system like the original. I could continue to go on but there's no point, the remake is flawed and the original isn't.
King Allants theme getting butchered to turn it into more Dark Soulsshit is like turning Gywn's theme into a big bombastic orchestra + choir, missed the point entirely. that being said the original is also a flawed game, cant pretend it was perfect
@@DourFlower The original wasn't perfect, but the remake was a flawed remake compared to the original, as in, it has flaws that the original doesn't have.
So when I got Demon's Souls what I did is every morning I would play Demon's Souls until I died. The moment I died I would delete my save file and turn off the PS3. This continued for about a month until I finally figured out that blocking hampers your ability to gain stamina and the game was smooth sailing from there.
The title is obvious, but the internet is full of COPIUM.

I gotta admit I can get pretty triggered about theses on OG DeS that rely on the remake. You most certainly don't get a pass for that, but it's also not some egregious act either. DeS either requires a PS3 or decent hardware to stably emulate, and the official servers are dead, butchering its highly novel online features - so it's not like there's a real 1:1 choice available. Still, a thesis is a thesis, and a thesis about the copy of an original thing is an inferior thesis... potentially, but not by default. Uh.
Truth is, the people who were there in 2009/2010 with DeS experienced the most unique moment for From, and one of the most unique moments in gaming history with respect to a single title. All of us that didn't are just kinda basking in the afterglow, maybe even staring in disbelief at that past. I'm kinda jelly, I guess, especially because I have distinct memories about seeing it on the "gaming news" and just casually wondering what I was looking at.
That said, this was worth making and worth watching. It's always nice when people talk about DeS other than to remark that there was "something" before DS1. Even if they diss the most fascinating "morality" system ever made.
I personally have a weird relationship with DeS. I am mind-boggled how Miyazaki had so many ideas realized in a single title, his first attempt at them. The raw execution of its systems is borderline scathing, and you must relent to its logic because it certainly won't relent to you. What an insane game. So raw that some of its design elements might never return... unless Miyazaki feels like it, I guess.
It’s very unfortunate how unwilling Sony is to rerelease PS3 games on the PS5. People would go crazy for the OG Demon’s Souls alongside games like New Vegas and MK9

Not worth the effort, re-programming games made to run exclusively on the PS3’s CELL processor to run in x86 based systems is way too much of hassle. Back compatibility like in Xbox consoles is just not possible with the PS3.
And besides, re-releasing old games like these, specially when better versions of them are available (for MK9 and FNV) is kinda of redundant.

The part about enemies attacking you is too funny. Most games have code that only allows a certain amount enemies to attack you at once, but in souls games everyone that is aggroed will attack you lol

Demons Souls PS3 was ground breaking and is the reason why I view Dark Souls the way most of Souls players/fans view Dark Souls 2. Dark Souls is a good game but its just an expansion of Demons Souls within the Souls series its nothing special. Solaire is basically Ostrava, Andre is basically Ed and Edwin merged into a single blacksmith, and the Maiden in Black is the Firekeeper. Demons Souls established the baseline plot/theme of restarting a given cycle that the series has been running with ever since. Dark Souls 2 which did different and better things than Dark Souls was a welcome change after two versions of Demons Souls.
There’s always the same variations on themes across all the souls games, ds2 is different because Miyazaki wasn’t really involved in developing that game
finally someone who feels the same as me, to this day I dont understand how they looked at demons souls tight and responsive combat system and decided we need to make it slower and clunkier

To answer your question about the bodies around Maiden Astrea (if you haven’t figured it out which I think you may have) the enemies of the area bring her the intruders they kill so she can harvest their souls to create pain relief miracles for the inhabitants.

World tendency is probably the best part of this game and DS2
It’s an optional difficulty setting for those seeking a challenge, which is ironic because most people complain that this game is too easy; without ever truly engaging with it’s systems

Your first souls game will be the hardest, (except for sekiro) and your last souls game will be the easiest (except for sekiro) And because of the remake of demon souls a lot of veteran players played it and said it's an easy game. Demons souls is not an easy game, fuck I'd say it's one of the hardest. People just say it's easy because they already played a bunch of other souls games.
