  • This is a video of the flatbed that I built for my $400 Ford Ranger. I couldn't find many good ones when I was searching for ideas so I thought I'd share this.
DONT BUILD ONE LIKE THIS FOR A 4 CYLINDER RANGER
Another affect of the rigid bed frame being welded to the truck frame is it stiffened it up very significantly! The truck ended up being a complete fail. I didnt do a good job of looking the truck over. I found some significant holes in the truck frame after all this work. And to top it off, the 4 cylinder engine was either toast or the bed was heavier than I thought. On the freeway with the pedal through the floor it would not go over 75 on flat ground. Passing people was dangerous and hauling things was just miserable. I sold it about a month after this video for $3,200. I lost about $1,500. I had an incredible amount of work into it. New rotors, wheel bearings, calipers, brake hoses, pads, shoes, drums, brake hardware, axle seals, axle bearings, diff cover, leaf springs, hangers, shackles, front and rear shocks, wheels & tires, headlight assemblies, starter, timing belt, water pump, EGR delete, plugs, wires, and the bed of course.

Thanks for posting a video of ur work. It gives me some ideas, it helps seeing what other people do, so i can decide how i want to do it.

Hey bud, I can imagine building a cubed kind of flatbed. The walls would be as tall as the cab and the tailgate would convert into barn doors and I can do a CNC run to make the text of the truck make (e.g. GMC, Ford) on those doors, too, if I ever had a truck like this. Plus, it would have built-on hooks and loops for tiedowns and bungees as well.

Why weld it to the frame tho? Now you can't remove it if you need too. Trust me it makes getting fuel pump and drive train work done much easier. But don't get me wrong. The bed idea is pretty nice. Great job.

Looking to do the same to my ranger, I was going to use 1/8 inch angle iron, how does the unistrut hold up?

What parts did you use to replace the leaf springs?

  • @tonysoutdoorsfishing5575

Could I ask you did you do the head rack and the side boards yourself or you ordered that online?

It was all home made. It was a ton of work welding all of it.
