This reflects the soldiers suffering as they’re trapped in a cycle of waiting and fearing the unknown. The soldiers cannot escape the cycle of suffering and are powerless to change their situation. Furthermore, Each stanza offers a glimpse into the soldiers' experience, often focusing on a specific element of their suffering. However, the fifth line disrupts the flow with the recurring remark, "But nothing happens." The anti-climax creates a sense of incompleteness and lack of development which reinforces the feeling that noble values such as heroism and honourability hold no meaning in war as their actions have no impact on their situation.
