- Don’t replace your pump until you watch this video first!
Ford made tons of cars and trucks with this power steering pump/reservoir. Unfortunately they tend to leak over time. Many mechanics will recommend complete pump replacement for many hundreds of dollars, but a repair kit is available which fixes these leaks for $27!

This is really helpful. I hate the ones where the guys tell you what they're going to do, and then go immediately to the completely disassembled problem without showing you how to get to it, which, for some of us, is the most difficult part. Thank you from the old ladies working on their old truck brigade.
Glad these videos are helping you!
Nice one. I made the mistake of adding regular power steering fluid in my '04. They call for mercon ATF.
The Ranger uses ATF Mercon (updated to Mercon V) for the power steering fluid. Need to bleed the air out of the lines.
The fittings are 18mm and 24mm. I'm currently trying to find out where the power steering pump is leaking on my son's 04 taurus with the vulcan 3.0. Very good instructions, thank you
Please let us know if it fixed your issues. Is that model Taurus the same part number?
@@ijfimyes, I'm guessing it's the same part number for all the 3.0 vulcan motors. Just received the parts today and putting it back together tonight 🤞🤞🤞
Also, what is the third o-ring for in the kit? The thinnest of the two bigger ones?
great video! this shows me exactly what i need to do on my 89. came here to see if i could do it myself and looks pretty easy😁
Really was easy, just make sure you don’t pinch the big o-ring when you are maneuvering the new reservoir into place.
Dude...!!!... "Betsey LuLu "...1993 Ford f150 5.0 truck been leaking Type F fluid from the Power steering pump for 'bout a year and a half...I got the S.L.C.S....Self Lubricating Chassis System...😂😂😂...Was gonna change out the whole pump...Gonna tryn do this repair 1st...Wish me luck....😊😊
How did it go? Leak-free now?
@@ijfim ....Well, I still have to buy the kit...Gotta do Front coil springs 1st, tho...Thanks for your reply, tho...👍👍
11/16 fits perfect i say this because 90% of wrench sets don't have 18mm included
You helped me fix my truck thank u
This is the best feedback! Glad I helped your situation in some way.
11:50 That fitting is PURE EVIL!
This video was super helpful. I'm having a ton of trouble getting the reservoir to fit over the new o-ring (like at 9:00) though. Won't even go on with a hammer lol. It's fairly cold outside here, does that matter?
Just double and triple-check your o-ring location. SYMMETRICALLY install your reservoir over the o-ring. If you cock it sideways, it will bind up. I hope you are kidding about the hammer!
Great step by step. Sorted out my 85 bronco's leaking pump. What is the 3rd O ring for?
No idea about third o-ring. Possibly that valve with the spring pressure behind it.
I was going to ask the same question. I got a 90 with a 2.9
You don't have to remove the compressor. I've changed these many times and NEVER removed the compressor.
My Isuzu Ascender is so hard to fix. I have a powersteering leaking also. And is way far to reach in to it😢
Might be worth digging into even though it is hard. Fixing leaks is a good feeling!
@@ijfim Thank you for the good advice. Do you know like how much a shop charges to get the seals in?
What engine are you working on? The Vulcan 3.0?
I wouldn't worry about the loose fitting. My 96 Cougar has the same pump and when I replaced the pressure hose the fitting was loose like that and same with the new one despite being tight. Neither one leaked.
I agree, no drips since repair. Thanks for the help!
Hi, I’m seeing your video and there is a third Oring that you’re didn’t say nothing about where to put her or is like a for replacement. I hope you answer my question help a lot your video I’m working i’m from Mexico, so I doing my best with my English but thanks so much for your video help a lot
I understand your English. The 3rd o-ring is likely for the other fitting I didn’t remove.
I’m wondering the same thing. What fitting are you talking about? I’ve taken the whole thing off and put it back twice and I’m not sure where that 3rd skinny o ring goes. Also now it’s making that whining noise a lot and having trouble while turning. It’s “skipping” a lot as I turn and feels very rough. Any info would be helpful. Thanks
Never mind I saw your reply on another comment. I was thinking it might go in that valve but not sure where to put it.
If I can push and pull the reservoir by not much but it moves and it leaks .. do I need to buy the whole pump or just the reservoir ? It doesn’t leak a lot but I was thinking it was the line and replaced that but still doing the same thing.
In my opinion, it’s cheap enough to give it a try. I think the reservoir is leaking.
Are there supposed to be teflon seals that go btw the fitting and the reservoir and one btw the high pressure hose and the fitting?? Thank you!
Not that I know of. I haven’t leaked a drop since I recorded the video so o-rings are all you need. Typically 1500 psi is the threshold that teflon backup rings are required.
@@ijfim awesome! Thanks for replying! I appreciate the help! Cheers!
What is the name of the little valve you replaced those two black o-rings?
Not sure, might be called an “orifice,” or “reducer,” or “adapter”
There isnt an o-ring down inside the pressure fitting where the hose threads into?
Im kind of stumped by mine because it is leaking from the fitting, but if you look close its not a regular pressure fitting. The hose side is beveled like a hydraulic fitting, while the female side is machined flat. There is no way for the hose and fittings to mesh like a hydraulic fitting.
Are you sure all the parts are correct? Sounds like it shouldn’t have worked from the start? Maybe your pressure hose is built as a 2-piece connector somehow and one of the pieces fell off when you disconnected it?
@@ijfim thanks for replying. I actually just posted a video on my page about it if you want to see what I'm talking about. I came up with a novel solution to fix it that seemed to work very well. Unless someone took the thing apart before I got the truck it appears to all be there. Also it seems like a pretty prolific problem bc there are tons of forum post about it, and all trucks I've seen at the junk yard leak right there.
This fit ford ranger 3.0 xlt 00?
I think so, it fits like 30 years of ford vehicles. Check with autozone app to see if it’s the same part number
Do you know where can I buy one ring seals ?
If you located in the U. S., you can got to Lowe's or Home Depot in the "Hardware Section "....Gonna need the old ones to get close to right size...Otherwise, Amazon sells this whole kit he showed...The part number is in the vid description...Otherwise, its "Hit and Miss " for the correct size...
How much did that kit cost
Roughly $20 at any auto parts store
pump sounds sick, take the damn thing out to pasture and put it out of its misery.
They all sound like that! Still strong!
On my 83, if you use anything other than Type F in the pump, it’ll whine like that.
Hey man I just order the part because I noticed that mine is leaking but the pump sounds good. So after you installed have you seeing any leaks ?
@noexcusesmakeithappen9871 no leaks at all! My pump makes noise, but it still works fine. Not a single drop since the repair. Just make sure you take it slow to line everything up properly.
mine doesnt
