Icehouse is an Australian rock band, formed as Flowers in 1977 in Sydney. Initially known in Australia for their pub rock style, they later achieved mainstream success playing new wave and synthpop style music and attained Top Ten singles chart success in both Europe and the U.S. The mainstay of both Flowers and Icehouse has been Iva Davies (singer-songwriter, record producer, guitar, bass, keyboards, oboe) supplying additional musicians as required. The name Icehouse, which was adopted in 1981, comes from an old, cold flat Davies lived in and the strange building across the road populated by itinerant people.
Icehouse's iconic status was acknowledged when they were inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame on 16 August 2006. ARIA described Icehouse as "one of the most successful Australian bands of the eighties and nineties... With an uncompromising approach to music production they created songs that ranged from pure pop escapism to edgy, lavish synthesised pieces..." Icehouse has produced eight Top Ten albums and twenty Top Forty singles in Australia, multiple top ten hits in Europe and North America and album sales of over 28 times Platinum in Australasia alone. As of 2006, Man of Colours was still the highest selling album in Australia by an Australian band. - Hudba

You're not wrong.I bought the single back when it came out here in the UK and have loved this tune ever since. Here... it just sounds so good. No wonder Iva is looking so pleased, it is aced right here.

I was 17yo, (1992) I somehow got into the now long extinct 'EMPIRE', underground, somewhere in Hindly Street Adelaide...first proper gig. Bought couple of Strongbows...then these guys came on. They had some incredibly bright white lights/ strobes shining up from under the drum kit with fans and a smoke machine... within 15min I'd somehow made my way up onto a subwoofer at left side of stage and sat there quietly watching the show. There were only about 100 people there....security guards were chill. The 1990s were so rad and that show was one of the best times of my life...☺
This live performance +30 years later is as faithful to the original recording as you can get
living in Austin Texas driving a delivery van for waterbeds and I heard this for the first time back I guess '81. I thought I had never heard a son like this. I played and played it on a cassette back then, bought it in CD. Been a fan since then.
An awesome, brooding masterpiece, made even better with the intro drums. One of my all time favourites.
Paul Wheeler would have to be up there with the best drummers in the country. His energy is amazing!

I'm 30 this year and I wouldn't be surprised at all if I'm remembering this live version when I'm Iva's age. That's how good it is. There's no love inside the Icehouse.

I've loved this song since I first heard it back in 1981. Most of the backing band all look like they weren't even born yet when this song came out. :)
I watched it on MTV back in the day in 1981!! Haunting and beautiful, I never forgot it.
Iva is the only original member.
Saw the original Flowers numerous times before the split - even saw them as an unknown band as third act on the bill supporting XTC along with The Numbers. Amazing song from a brilliant LP - which was outstanding for a debut LP.
This was the best video back in 1981 the original studio recording this way before M TV channel 12 public access Broomfield Colorado

A really haunting masterpiece.I wrote to Iva many years ago,explaning that he did not get the credit he should have gotten in the U.S and that he should give it another try! About 2 years later this whole show,live in Sydney appears,and I could not be happier,as he just kills every song!So cool! Thanks guys for a totally cool experience!
Got very heavy play at AOR radio, but Top-40 just missed it. Blame it on their US label Crysalis.

Great GREAT! Tune!! I used to play this Song every Sunday afternoon during my 3 hour DJ Shift at my College Radio Station WVVS 91fm Valdosta State Univ. (College bk in the 80's) Iva Davies is a Very talented not just a musician but when he was 18 to 23 or so and prepared Music pages for each musician Playing in an Orchestra! And, other High Responsibility Job for a Orchestra or Musicians Playing a Recital etc. In a time when most guys at his age then with a Record deal couldn't Read a line of Music!! Icehouse, Midnight Oil, INXS, and a Shout out to a Very Talented Singer, Songwriter and Musician & Actress I met when we were both in the Same Play in Nashville GA. 2004, Pru Clearwater and her husband were both So Darn NICE, KIND, & She Always wud Complement me on my Austrailian Accent! G'day Gone how's it Goin Mate!! If Anyone Deserved a Break in the Music Industry & a Record Contract it was Pru Clearwater! Been close to 20 years and I Hope Pru & her Cool as It gets Husband are Doing Super!! Australia has So much Cool Music that College Radio Gigs introduced me. To!! Cheers Pru and to ALL The Aussie Band which aren't relying on a Drum machine and Some of the most Stupid Lyrics that just rely on yelling into a Microphone! SUX!!! One of my favorite (Top 3) bands. Extremely underrated as many have noted. I have been a fan since 1983.
RESPECT for a band that keeps a great song Icehouse the way it was, as the fans want to hear it. So many, especially singers, start singing songs different through the year until they are almost unrecognizable.
Takes me back over thirty years and still wonderful, timeless and beautiful :)

Wow! Wow! Wow! Better than the original and the original was a gem. Unique deep dark blue gem. I'm floored. I had to pull over to listen to it. I cranked it up so loud passing cars could hear it.

Just an amazing song. And when the guitar kicis in 3/4 of the way through the song. Its a complete driving sound. I have the studio version on the Icehouse album. Just pulled it out to listen to it again. Boy I miss those days. I long to haver them back again.

I hadn't realized how strong their guitars were throughout their songs until I heard them play live. Definitely of my favs of all time, ICEHOUSE ROCKS. Please come thru Canada...we've got so long to wait for them:)))

At the Palais in Melbourne Icehouse opened the set with this song. It had a fantastic long drum solo intro. I have seen many bands live but none has ever surpassed that set. Aussie rock at its best!

So glad I stumbled onto this upload. Never saw the band play live but this concert is a terrific performance. As many have mentioned I cant believe the audience reaction being so laid back, Im 55 and it gets me jumping!

It's sort of nice to have a quiet crowd. You can appreciate the music so much more. Saw Pink Floyd at the Oakland Coliseum years ago. We were up in the stands, but when the lights flashed down on the patrons on the ground floor, you could see everyone just sitting, taking it all in.

I'm so old (nearly 59) I first saw them 40 years ago supporting XTC - in 1979 before the brilliant debut album. And then wow - they were huge a year or so later
David Mosele I have seen icehouse in concert twice the first time back in the early eighties and then in the 2000s they sound just as good now as they did back then ,if you ever get the chance go and see them.,even though the band split up years ago they still get together and do gigs now and then!

@@andysmith6218 been watching the current live videos and can tell it would be a great show. Just can't afford to travel half way around the world to see it. Maybe they'll come back to the US one day. If so I'm liable to follow them around and go to every show...become an Ice head. 😁😋

One of my all time favorite songs not only of Icehouse but period. When you love a live aversion better than the LP version, there's something to be said about it. This song has stood the test of time of over 35 years and counting.

I saw them live at the Enmore theatre very recently, I have been to about 14 concerts since my divorce in 2011 and found there performance on that night to be second to none.

David, I will be 71 the day before I see them at the Enmore on 13th February, 2016. They sure as hell get me jumping - as much as my new hip allows!! Iva and Icehouse are Australian National Treasures. Can't believe how good they are 30+ years on. Hope Iva sings "Heroes" as a tribute to David Bowie on 13th.

WOW...I remember seeing the Flowers when they released the Icehouse album in a Sydney pub...Iva holding a cigarette and the smoke machines.....great memories.

The same synth sound as 1980...I can kind of get it on my Nord Lead...love Icehouse...the genius of Iva Davies. Would LOVE to know what synths were used when the original was recorded...probably Prophet 5's back then.
