I totally agree that "revenge & retribution" do not help us. A new beginning for both is created through forgiveness. However, one doesn't expect the other to change... One empowers oneself through forgiveness.

"Opening the window" via contrition... apologizing from the heart... is essential for the one who did the deed, so they can release guilt. Forgiving the one who did the deed, forgiving oneself for one's own part in the dance, is essential for the "victim's" view. (Here I speak in general of victims. In Genocide, there are clear victims. In Western Society, there are societal mores that create victims, perpetrators & rescuers - the drama triangle. To get out of the drama triangle, one needs to forgive.

Act of will is the first step towards forgiveness. Full forgiveness from the heart comes only through God. It's a huge grace.

sometimes we fool our own selves thinking we have forgiven..... I dont have to forgive everyone. God is in the position to do the forgiving when people cant. talking is easy to say I forgive... what you really feel in heart is not always what you are saying.

To me, forgiving is from the heart. The words alone are empty.
