- This didn't come from a stream! It's piping hot fresh content made for CZcams, I swear!
I'm playing on Chess.com -- these aren't sponsored videos but the site seems pretty cool.
Chess has been having a resurgence in popularity this year so I have finally acquiesced to semi-popular demand and started to play a bit. First, let's hone our skills and get a little more warmed up and then let's conquer chess dot com one board gamer at a time.

About this game:
the horse moves like an L
On move 16, down more than 50% of his time: "we're probably playing too fast."
I've started saying "dunka dunka dunka" and "If you wanna get weird, let's get weird" and recently shaved my head, but my ELO is still ~800. Please advise.
Your name is Quinn B, its an easy to mistake to make
have a child
@@deven9565 Okay, telling my gf we have to have a kid so my ELO doubles.
@@hariodinio I love that you even took the time to edit your attempt at an insulting comment and still made a typographical error, thank you for this gift.
Dunka dunka dunka
I don't think anyone would complain if you played 15 | 10 time control or something. It uses the same ranking and gives you more time to talk.
i only play 15 10
15|10 is best but idk if he wants videos to be significantly longer. Although i'd welcome that.
@@matthewg4882 15 | 10 and one game a vid would be a decent length imo.
low patience gang checking in with my 2 cents: I prefer 10 minutes. It better fits my go-go lifestyle
As long as he still played 2 games at minimum per video. I don't think I would enjoy only getting one longer match versus 2 shorter ones. Personally 10 minutes I think is plenty of time its just NL is a slower player
Misread "lead" in the title as "load" and was super bewildered. God I need to get some sleep
That would be the title of his opponents videos probably, when they won after getting him to blunder to time pressure.
I thought he was going to OmegaNut on camera.
I misread the "lead" in your comment as the metal lol.
The dream NL vid
BOP
He managed to grasp defeat from the hands of victory... Twice!
this level of analysis is good but not for 10+0 games, he gets to a point where he has no time to think and his opponent does. I'd quite like to see him play some maybe 15+10 games even though I feel like chat might be a bit residentsleeper but I'd be pog
@@rain8478 is your hair always wet
I'm so happy to see the standalone chess content, so pogged
"I think we're playing too fast."
He says, 5 minutes down in a 10 minute game
NL has the time management and sense of urgency of the EU ordering vaccines.
@@EnaiSiaion oof it hurts
He blew the ending but the tactics involved in that first game are actually so commendable.
you know you messed up your clock management when you have 20 seconds and your oponent has 7 minutes and you are not in an amazing position of advantage
I just realized that me checking the same garbage moves over and over hoping something has changed within the turn is like opening the fridge every couple hours hoping there’s a guilty pleasure snack waiting for you.
"I'm playing very badly, but creating beautiful things" is now Ryan's channel motto
Watching him play rapids isn't like watching rapids its like him just talking.
I feel like the (Chess) at the end is a bit redundant. Waiting for Blowing The Biggest Lead In Chess History (Dadcraft)
You can totally play chess in Minecraft, it’s not even hard.
I think maybe it's a subtle joke, not meant for children.
the pogs are gonna come out when he gives it the (spelunky 2)
Blowing The Biggest Load In Chess History (Police Called)
29:26 "Could take the knight" then right before he says "but that is not good enough". Opponent moves to a position in which taking the knight will put them in check and attack the queen at the same time.
I read "Blowing the biggest Load in Chess History" and not gonna lie , I was interested.
bro??
11:13 To a fellow chess gamer that moment is so relatable it's almost physically painful
YESSSS. Please bring back daily chess uploads, NL. Even better if they are specific for CZcams. The twitch VODs are good, but I have been sorely missing the specific CZcams Chess uploads.
I'm just lowly 1000 ELO trash, but at the end of the first game was literally yelling "Take the knight at e7!" at the screen the whole time.
I don't know if that happens to many people, but i often find good moves when watching videos but when i play i rarely spot tactics that are there
@@vanadium1021 Yeah, backseating is always easier, since you're not under pressure.
@@vanadium1021 Yes, this 100%. I also find myself looking for riskier, more aggressive moves when I'm watching videos, as if it doesn't work or it all goes horribly wrong, it doesn't matter.
Fred was putting major amounts of pressure on in that first game! Tough loss, shows that even in longer games that time can ruin some good play.
That's what happens when you use half of your time on the 12th move
I love the chess content but NL's clock management is bad for my anxiety lmao. Great content tho that first game was especially really cool, some really interesting positioning there.
*reads title*
"We had a couple of well played games in the last video"
Oh no no no no...
I know he's gotta do it for contents sake but that time management kills me every time
From the title alone I know it's gonna be spicy. Hoping for a bong cloud move
This man was could have been ahead by and entire chess army's worth, but the bishop was scared and retreated two steps and he was done for.
Really loving these videos so much! It makes it so much more tense and enjoyable when you play these kind of games too, win/loss doesn't matter, your sense of tactics and position in these games is really fun to see.
NL’s only gone and done it, he’s mistaken England for the UK. Sacrilege
At 8:51 I think Bishop a4 to d7 is the best move because it either wins the queen or leads to checkmate on e6
I envy the calm you show in this situations. Usually I am close to a mental breakdown when something similar happens to me...
Thanks for more chess content NL. I've gone from no interest in chess to 800 and now 950 ELO. I was losing my mind this video because I saw that knight play and was yelling at my TV "just take the rook!"
I love these chess videos so much
When NL always runs out of time to think about endgame yet always says how he has plenty of time almost every game.
huge missed fork at 11:00, NxE7
The time crunches were crazy these games. You're opening and mid games usually end up in your favor though, which you love to see. Can't wait for more chess
At 8:00, I would take the horse with my dark square bishop. If he recaptures with queen great! Mate in 2, capture d5 pawn with queen, black queen blocks, queen takes queen, and its mate.
If he takes with bishop, just move light square bishop to d7 to block the queen. Queen won’t take because bishop is defended by the knight. Hoping that c pawn doesn’t move forward to protect d pawn, in the next turn you capture d pawn with queen and it’s mate (unless two pawns in front of king moves to make breathing room, in which case it’s just a check, but istill like the position)
If you're up material in a position, try not to think 5 minutes on a complicated variation to try to figure out the best move in the position when you have a simple, but still good move that ensures you your (material) advantage that you already have.
Your clock won't burn and you're gonna have less blunders --> less losses
4 moves in and he's already out of prep
at 10:11 knightxe7, Qxe7, Qxd5+ (queen blocks then you move bishop to b3 and if they take queen you take with bishop and it’s mate). thought that line was cool. if i miscalculated let me know. also if bishop takes on e7 you still take on d5 forking the rook on a8 and the king
edit- he addressed this in postgame analysis
That line is even better on 10:53, cause qxd5 wins u the rook
@@matsknoeff2855 you also win the rook if you play it at 10:11 right? or am i missing something
NL: "We can puzzle this out, we got loads of time"
Me: Here we go again...
That first game was beautiful. Shame that it didn’t work out, but the idea was very entertaining to watch
Where were you when NL learned how to pronounce fianchetto
1:25
Move your f knight out of the way, Bh7 sacrifice, Qh5 mate
Got to look at the repercussions of takes more in the tactics. That knight was screaming to be traded off and blow up the position
More youtube only chess please! Love it
"i feel like i'm playing badly but creating beautiful things"
At 8:35 I actually saw the best move bishop d7 to block the queen from protecting the pawn on d5. I thought you had mate in 1 when NL's queen takes the pawn but I didn't see the knight. But i guess bishop to e6 was another move you could make after that.
The first guy played Qf6 and Qg6 with SIX MINUTES on his clock and he's "1640"??? Was gonna say, "rapid ratings are a joke," but I just checked the guy's chesscom profile and it turns out his blitz rating is only 52 points lower.
I really do like your contact. I’m glad to see you playing chess. Whatever your level
First game gave me depression at the missed mates
i think the key for a rating climb now is to study the advanced london and the caro-kann so that you can save time
The "thank you!" instead of "see ya" at the end feels extremely cursed, and I have no idea why.
NL should watch Levy's video on time management.
Your deep thinking and then turning into a blunder looks like me playing.
YOO I just started learning chess and these videos are so helpful. Someone who is still learning themselves, but is miles ahead of me. Perfect.
I wasn't sure what this video was going to be about until I read the parentheses.
Congrats on 850!
Mate I haven't had a Boddington's for time. Might have to grab a couple of tins from Waitrose.
I will not be hiring The Egg as my triggerman.
In carocan defense u have to play h2 and in London take the horse also in sicilian especialy with Black you just have to
2:30 this laugh sounded really painful for some reason
It does have a big Joker Energy for sure
I saw the thumbnail and was like oh shit he's pulling his hair back this is gonna be good ...........then I remembered.......... all of his videos are good
I agree... except the hair part.
10:52 Sucks NL's idea didn't work :( I spotted a sequence I think wins the rook for the knight and maybe the queen for the bishop too which I'm quite happy with, if a good player would like to verify I'm not missing something?! (I'm probably a worse rated player than NL):
21. Nxe7+ Bxe7 22. Qxd5+ Qf7 23. Qxa8+ Bf8 24. Bb3 Qxb3 25. cxb3
Edit: okay never mind, I kept watching the video and yeah that's the move haha. Glad I figured it out for myself first at least!
What an incredible thumbnail. Keep up the insane content egg
10:10 exchanging knights then check on e5 is best no? If he takes with bishop you win a rook
If he takes with Queen the following occurs:
Black Queen blocks then you move bishop to b3 and it’s forced mate
That was a pog first game and analysis
Thanks for the company, eggor.
Yoooo shout out to boddingtons
Finally something not from a stream
Just wanted to say, c4 is not a thing in the Caro Kann. You need your c pawn to pressure the center
EY ERRBODY BOUT TO BLOW A HUGE LEAD
good afternoon northernlion i hope u see this great content as always thank you
Chess is my favorite series yet, pogged even when you lose
It's funny. You're crushing your opponents and then you choose to lose, but very entertaining! Lol
These videos are so good
0:50 am I tripping or couldn't he have checkmated right here when he was talking about it? Just move queen to h5. Am I going crazy here?
-When he's playing with no time limit: beating a really good 2500 elo bot, which Gothamchess hardly beat (or only drew against him?)
-When he's playing with a time limit: 1.5 minutes left in move 20...
Maybe 15 min games? Maybe better time management? That's the million dollar question...
Got a Masterclass ad featuring none other than the chess master and ultimate legend Garry.
Talking about Ryan Garry, not that measly gm Garry Kasparov or whatever.
The first game was 800 ELO plays with 1500 ELO confidence
You need to fix/work on your time management
blundering a queen so bad that your opponent doesn't even need to take it lmfaooooooooooooooooooo
11:44 wait NL is doing Krillin’s Solar Flare move right
I'm a lowly 1300 and still find myself bursting at the seams whenever you miss a seemingly winning move, line, or idea. Captain hindsight I guess 😅
Also 15-10 is goated format I would highly recommend it. Perfect amount of time to think imo!!!!
Chess? Only made for youtube? Holyyy Jesus!
That first game was aggressive af lmao
You were winning with many many moves and just went instantly to losing with Bb3
That's funny, I did the opposite yesterday. Came back from being -78 to M1 that I missed, but did end up winning. 400 ELO End Boss right here.
My personal favourite flavor of NL content is chess, League of legends and death stranding.
POGS ARE FUCKING BLEEDING OUTTA MY ASS OH GOD IT WONT STOP
You have to capture his horse in London this is big defensive peace
Thank you for the CZcams content today.
Chess from Twitch? Pog. Bespoke chess? Pog. NL? Pog. Baby? Pog. Tomo? Pog. It's pogs all the way down brother, just let me ride the slide.
21:07 you missed a rook queen fork?
Finally someone with my Elo rating that I can watch and understand what’s going on while still playing decent chess lol
At 5:52 can someone explain to me why he would move queen to e2?
Ahhh shoulda forced the queen trade in that last game. Love the chess content thanks!
I felt like Hikaru screaming “take the knight then take the pawn!” at my screen in the first game lmao
I'm no Hikaru, but I was screaming “take the knight then take the pawn!” at my screen for sure.
If the world is just and right, NL will at least TRY 15|10 so he doesn't have time problems like in the first game. Please, Father, we beg.
@9:42 what does anybody do in this situation. Well... You traden knights and bishops, and then win the rook with Qd5+ I'd guess? :-)
I am giving you the like before watching the video. I am also fond of aggressive moves and I never doubt the POGs will be delivered.
Amazing games, super entertaining and overall well played!
what if i do this. *draws queen and bishop sacrifice for a rook trade*
Wow you literally had +10 move at several points!!! 😂
