The XVIII Olympic Winter Games were held from 7 to 22 February 1998, and were centered at Nagano, Japan. Being Asia's, and the nation's second Winter Games just 26 years after Sapporo previously played host in 1972, Nagano's organizing committee recognized three goals for the 1998 Games, which they referred to as "Games from the Heart": promote youth participation, coexistence with nature (hence its official motto), and create a festival with peace and friendship at its centre.
The 1998 Winter Games featured 68 medal events over 14 disciplines in seven sports, which is an increase from 61 events in 12 disciplines and six sports from the 1994 Games in Lillehammer. There, snowboarding was introduced to the Winter Olympics and curling returned to the Games' programme as an official medal event after years of being featured as a demonstration sport. While women's ice hockey debuted at the Nagano Games, professional players were allowed to participate in men's ice hockey for the first time, and the tournament itself has sought success for the Czech Republic, in which captain Vladimír Růžička spearheaded his country to its first Olympic title.
A total of 2,176 athletes from 72 nations had gathered at Nagano, with Azerbaijan, Kenya, Macedonia, Uruguay, and Venezuela made their debuts at the Winter Games - the number of athletes and participating nations were a record at the time.
