- I'm so happy to be back! I knew I had to make a video for you all with an update on what's going on and my recent conclusion to finding the right brake caliper set on my 1987 Fuji Palisade road bike!
I hope I am able to show this detail that may not be known for a newer "vintage road bike" builder, but can definitely make your build that much more enjoyable!

On my 1982 MIYATA PRO, I use SunTour Superbe Brakes and levers, as well as Suntour Superbe Bar Ends much modified by removal of rubber and filed and polished.
Dude the bike looks so good with that bright Florida background! Nutted breaks fire me up! (3:50-4:10)
Seriously very color coordinated! Me too, nutted gang 🙌🔥🔥
The first bike I owned circa 1988 had Suntour Superbe brake levers. They had carmel coloured rubber hoods. The cables protruding from the top of the hoods. Which was already getting old hat by then.
Rim brakes for life! 🤟 Though when I switched from single to dual pivot calipers, that was a world of difference for my heavy ass. Feel more confident with them ever since. 🚴
Heck yea! I love me some single pivot brakes but will always still rock some dual pivot on my other bikes!
I think the dual pivots do up the braking game a good amount and isn’t complete overkill like disc brakes.
Thank you so much for sticking around and watching! I really appreciate that.
Esp on vintage road bikes (besides the fact that they usually do not come with mounts for disc brake calippers) the only sensible thing are rim brakes (nutted or recessed).
For brake performance, i do agree though, that the dia-compe (dual pivot) i have on my 27'' to 700C work loads better than the Weinmanns (Single pivot) which were on there previously.
Furthermore, i feel the centering, while not much of an issue with single pivot, is a lot easier to dial in on dual pivot brakes.
Regarding the riding - this would be a tad too flat for me since i love climbing, but lft see where you finally end up. Kudos!
True, I wish I specified more about how I don’t expect someone to put disc brakes on a vintage bike (either by an aftermarket fork or welding mounting points)
I have had a few single pivots in the past where they just would not stay center, it was frustrating, but I can acknowledge that the adjustment screw in dual pivot brakes make it loads easier! Thanks for the comment and I do miss the climbing too 😅
Some extra details on the calipers, They are the 4700 model which means they are the longer reach version and the measurements are from 47mm to 57mm. I have set them with my wrench and they have NOT moved a bit! More details can be found on this site which I go to all the time when researching vintage bike parts: www.velobase.com/ViewComponent.aspx?ID=07247d39-2114-4055-9f25-8131c4e22bbe&Enum=117
The Fuji looks amazing!
Thank you! And it feels amazing too that's why this frame is the entire package lol. Thanks for commenting!
Wow! You are right about how flat it is over there. I'm used to all the PA climbs and hills!
I do miss the climbing! Now it’s 100% flat out speed which I have to work on as I didn’t need it back in Vegas 😂
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Wow, I have the same bike! I love mine.
Glad you have one! It's such a sweet ride. Thanks for commenting and watching, there will be more to come with the Fuji!
@@newoldsteel it is a sweet ride. I'm about to refurbish it. It's all original. Can't wait to see more of the fuji!
No climbs would drive me nuts TBH! ...Andy Hampsen and Marco Pantani are my idols...For me living in the mountains i've had enough soaking wet descents where rim brakes were next to useless that even a cable disc brake outperformed them. Also I think many Suntour brakes were actually made by Dia Compe?...not sure tho
Oh yea I'm going to miss climbing, and I'm not the greatest at flat out speed.
I can definitely acknowledge that disc is better for wet descents!
There was collaboration with Dia Compe if I'm not mistaken, but their main manufacturer was Maeda, but this is why I'm so fascinated with vintage stuff and Suntour, it's just such a mystery and hard to find exact details from the past.
Wow looks amazing florida !! You really belong there dude 👍great bike👍
Tektro medium reach nutted dual pivot didn't used to be expensive; bought some for an old Bianchi ~10 years ago for $35 each. Things are different now, of course.
That’s what I thought, like there was no way they were always priced like that! Appreciate your comment and watching!
The Fuji was a good choice! Also, do you know what bar tape you are using?
It’s been a blast! The bar tape is the Deda Elementi Mistral kind. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Wow, in the mid of FL summer heat and humidity, you still wear arm warmers and knee warmers...😬
Haha nah they are just UV covers and not warmers, but I do have an extreme tolerance for the heat out here (and when I was back in Vegas). I’ll never go without the covers on all my rides. Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it!
What rims and handlebar?
