  • Title: The Ring
    Director & Animator: Alan Platt
    Year: 2000
    Country: New Zealand
"The Ring" is a 2000 New Zealander stop motion short film by Alan Plat. It depicts the story of the cycle of 4 operas "Des Ring Des Nibelungen" (The Ring Of The Nibelung), by German composer Richard Wagner.
The operas cycle, which lasts approximately 16 hours, it is condensed here to 29 minutes. Orchestration was done by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, which director Alan Platt gave great value for the making of the short film "the music is the real teller of the tale, and that's what it becomes in our film".
"The Ring" presents its story in a friendly way for children so that they could be introduced to the magic world of operas, using animated clay figurines of gods, giants, dwarfs, mermaids and dragons.
Director Alan Platt further says: "We can make the giants appear enormous against the tiny, evil-looking dwarves. Instead of the usual cumbersome Wagner soprano we can have a beautiful, sexy heroine. And the fiery dragon has all the exaggerated horror of the old picturebook fairytales.
Wagner would have loved it too."

    4) Gotterdammerung. Well, technically the animation ended within Siegfried's events, but the scenes depicted in the ending of this animation correspond to Gotterdammerung. Here's what's different:
In the operas, after the events depicted in Siegfried, Siegfried and Brunnhilde live together in the rock for an undetermined ammount of time. Then the events in Gotterdammerung start: Siegfried goes off to new adventures, Brunnhilde stays in the rock with the ring and through a spell makes Siegfried immune to frontal attacks. However, he's still vulnerable to attacks from behind, and that's how he is killed by Hagen (Alberich's son) during the Gibichung plot. Brunnhilde then immolates with her horse into Siegfried's funeral pyre, the fire cleanses the ring from its curse. The flames reach Valhalla and burn it, ending the age of the gods. The Rhinedaughters retrieve the ring from the funeral pyre and the story ends.
Here instead, immediately after Siegfried awakens Brunnhilde, Alberich (who has been stalking Siegfried) appears at the summit of the rock, and he kills Siegfried stabbing him in the part of his back that was covered by the leaf. Brunnhilde battles with Alberich and, using the power of the ring, she brings Nothung, which is lying on the ground, to her hand (much like the abilities depicted in Star Wars). Brunnhilde kills Alberich. Funeral pyre (the ring has already been cleansed of its curse when Siegfried put it on Brunnhilde's finger), burning of Valhalla, return of the ring to the Rhinedaughters, the end.
And that covers the differences between this animation and the operas!
I recommend reading the graphic novel from P. Craig Russell, "The Ring of the Nibelung", you're gonna love it! P. Craig Russell did beautiful drawings in his rendition of the story, as you will find by a quick search on Google or a click on this video czcams.com/video/KF-Sy7s0Lqo/video.html And, moreover, if you're terrified of the length of the operas, but you still would like to enjoy the wonderful story of The Ring Of The Nibelung, it is a fantastic way to experience it in a friendly way! Believe me, you will love it!
    ¡Chau pibes!

    3) Siegfried. This animation technically ends within the events from this opera, without going into Gotterdammerung. Like I said, it only depicts scenes that advance the plot (so no depictions of accesory dialogues like the ones between Mime and Wotan, or between Alberich and Mime). What are the differences with the operas?
Well, in the operas Siegfried is free and he often runs away from home. The first thing he does after completing Nothung's reforging is striking an anvil, splitting it in two. Mime then leads him to Neidhole, where Siegfried kills Fafner. He sucks the dragon's blood and that makes him understand the language of the birds. A woodbird tells him to retrieve the ring and tarnhelm, and also that he now knows the true intentions in Mime's words. So he kills Mime after discovering that he is trying to put him to sleep with a drink, with the purpose of killing him asleep. The woodbird then reveals about Brunnhilde and leads Siegfried to her rock. On the way there, Wotan tries to block Siegfried but is defeated when Nothung cuts his spear. Siegfried continues, reaches the summit of the rock, awakens Brunnhilde by a kiss, and they become lovers.
Here instead, Siegfried is raised being chained, and the first thing he does after completing Nothung's reforging is striking Mime, killing him prematurely, and then shattering his chains. While he was reforging Nothung, Alberich started to stalk him. Without Mime, it seems it is the magic power of Nothung that leads Siegfried to Neidhole. A leaf falls on his back, and after killing Fafner, he bathes in the dragon's blood, becoming immune to attacks, save for that spot covered by the leaf (a welcome addition in this version: this is closer to the original Nibelungenlied than the operas). A woodbird leads him to Brunnhilde's rock (no encounter with Wotan). All the time Alberich is stalking him. Siegfried reaches the summit and awakens Brunnhilde by putting the ring on her (it seems this is what cleanses the ring out of its curse).

What a excellent interpretation of Wagner's grand opus dating from 2000! A wonder I haven't heard of it until today. The work and craftsmanship that went into this stop-motion video is extraordinary. The great Ray Harryhausen (the wizard behind the stop-motion animation in Jason and the Argonauts) would have been proud. Although the director and animator Alan Platt took liberties with the original operas; he totally captures the central themes and story. Most of Die Walküre and all of Götterdämmerung are missing, Alberich kills Siegfried instead of Hagen, but with such beauty, who cares? This is the Ring in a parallel universe, as if Wagner had condensed it into one opera instead of four. The casting and setting are excellent: Wotan and the gods are magnificent, Loge reminds me of a genie from the Arabian Nights (I love the way he moves to the fire music !), the Rhine maidens, dwarfs, giants, and dragon are playfully rendered, and Brünnhilde and Siegfried are both gorgeous. If I were a multi-billionaire, I'd commission him to hire a team and do the whole Ring with the voices of top opera stars and an unlimited budget!

To be fair, a LARGE chunk of the plot that was cut or skirted over involves characters explaining the situation through singing back and forth.. which can be hard to convey through pantomime. haha also notice that by taking these liberties for the sake of clarity it cut all the incest out?

The chain of influence went Kant -> Schopenhauer -> Wagner -> Nietzsche, if that's what you meant. Nietzsche didn't influence Wagner's philosophy; it was the other way round.

alright sooooo... this stop motion animation condenses the 16 hours of the 4 operas to just 29 minutes. With so much shortening, there's bound to be differences with the operas. So what are the differences with the operas, you may be asking?:
    1) Rheingold. Of the 4 operas, it is the most faithfully depicted. Almost all the characters appear, which is a big surprise (even some that have an almost non-existent role appear, like Froh). The only one missing is Erda. What other differences are there? The giants wear thongs... xD well, now seriously, other differences with the operas are:
In the operas, the story starts with the scene with the swimming Rhine's daughters. There, only Alberich comes out from the cave. The scene of Valhalla starts with the gods, the giants arrive a bit later. Loge appears fortuitously in scene while the gods and the giants are still arguing. Once Freia is kidnapped, the lack of the golden apples makes the gods grow old quickly. Wotan and Loge arrive to Nibelheim at the moment the tarnhelm is finished by Mime. Alberich transforms into a dragon to prove his great powers to Loge. When Alberich has transformed into a frog he's still wearing the ring, so Wotan and Loge catch him, tie him, and take him to Valhalla. Once there, Wotan and Loge make Alberich hand over the golden hoard and tarnhelm. Then Wotan forcefully takes the ring away from Alberich. In his anger, Alberich announces the curse of the ring and then escapes. The giants order that as a pay they want all the treasures needed to cover Freia from their view. After giving them the hoard and tarnhelm, Wotan refuses to hand them over the ring. Erda appears and warns Wotan that a calamity would happen if he keeps the ring, which convinces him to surrender it. Fafner puts all the treasures in a bag after killing Fasolt, and he leaves to Neidhole. The gods enter Valhalla, but Loge, not wanting to join them, dissapears.
Here instead, the story starts in media res: at the opening it shows scenes from the ending of the Ring cycle of operas. Then, in the proper start of the story, when Alberich comes out from a cave to woo the Rhine's daughters, Mime appears for a very short time before Alberich kicks him back to the cave (overall, in this depiction of Rheingold, Mime has a bigger role than in the opera). Alberich has an eyepatch in this version of the story, which is a nice touch: now that both Wotan and Alberich wear eyepatches, it gives a new meaning to the dichotomy of "Black Alberich - Light Alberich", where Wotan recognizes that he and Alberich aren't that different and that they are actually two sides from the same coin. The giants and Wotan are in the same place at the start of the Valhalla scene. Wotan is accompanied by a pretorian guard of Valkyries. In this version the plot point about the golden apples isn't touched. Loge appears after the giants kidnap Freia-Wotan summons Loge by hitting the ground with the staff of his spear (this actually happens in Walkure). Wotan and Loge arrive to Nibelheim at the moment the ring is finished. Alberich transforms into a dragon to scare the nibelungs he enslaved. When Alberich has transformed into a frog, the ring keeps its size and just falls to ground. Wotan only picks up the ring. While Wotan and Loge are returning to Valhalla, Loge disappears. Only the ring is needed to pay the giants. Wotan gives the ring to the giants right away. Alberich and Mime go together to Valhalla, and using some magic potion they create together the curse of the ring.

    2) Walkure. Almost nothing of this opera is depicted. The action jumps to when Siegmund has been already killed in his battle against Hunding (who doesn't appear whatsoever). Brunnhilde, who happens to pass by with her Valkyrie formation, pulls out from the formation and picks up Siegmund's corpse. It seems this act is an infringement serious enough that makes Wotan order the putting of Brunnhilde to sleep and her fire encirclement... and that's the only other scene portraying an event from Die Walkure (which by the way is that opera's ending). It seems they went for portraying scenes that advance the plot, not accesory dialogues (like the lengthy dialogues between Wotan and Brunnhilde). And, seeing that this is a very psychological opera, with much dialogue and few action, it makes sense that few of this opera is depicted.
Well, the good thing is there are portrayals of some events that aren't in the operas, events that happen in the time-spans before and after Walkure. Of the former, there's Fafner turning into a dragon and flying to Neidhöle (he only carries the ring, not the bag with all the treasures like in the operas). Of the latter, there's Mime picking up the baby Siegfried and Nothung's shatters, and his raising of Siegfried.
Notice this means there are many differences with the operas. In the operas, Wotan orders Brunnhilde to kill Siegmund during his battle with Hunding, but she disobeys his orders. Wotan's spear shatters Nothung and the now weaponless Siegmund is killed by Hunding (who in turn is killed by Wotan). Brunnhilde hastily rescues Sieglinde (who has just started her pregnancy) and picks up the shattered Nothung. She goes with her Valkyrie sisters and informs everyone that, due to Sieglinde being pregnant, they need to transport her to a safe place before the angered Wotan arrives. One of the Valkyries takes Sieglinde and the shattered Nothung to the entrance of Neidhöle. Wotan imprisons Brunnhilde for disobeying him. In Neidhole, Mime finds Sieglinde and carries her to his house, he treats her during her pregnancy. She dies while giving birth. Mime then raises Siegfried and deposits Nothung's shatters.
Here instead, Brunnhilde picks up Siegmund's corpse... why? it is difficult to make sense out of a silent, stop motion short... my theory is that she deems Siegmund worthy enough of being taken to Valhalla, but Fricka told Wotan in the magic mirror scene to forbid any Valkyries of bringing Siegmund to Valhalla, and so Wotan imprisons Brunnhilde for disobeying Fricka's orders... other differences: Sieglinde has already given birth to Siegfried (so the battle between Siegmund and Hunding takes place after Siegfried is born), when Mime appears he picks up baby Siegfried and shattered Nothung but Sieglinde is left to die, and like I said Wotan orders Brunnhilde's imprisonment for (apparently) disobeying Fricka's orders.
